Many players deleted their dead friends to make room for more, as the Shout feature was limited to only the first 2000 friends seeing our Shouts. Some of us just couldn't bear to delete our oldest dead friends, as that little icon may be all we have to connect to these cherished memories. "Maybe someday they'll come back," we tell ourselves.

Monday evening, one of our oldest dead friends posted a simple Shout, "Back, someone help!" Gaius Julius is back in the game.
Before long, he messaged that he had found his way around the new player interface and had plenty of everything, just as he had left it a year and a half ago. His next Shout promises an "I'm back" article.
Gaius Julius is back.

Before we talk with Gaius, himself, let's do a little mandatory background to refresh our own memory and bring newer players up to speed. His Wiki page is sorely out of date, but for accurate ancient history it's probably just fine. Here's a few of the fancy job titles Gaius Julius held back in the day:
3x Congressman, Federalist Party President, Secretary of State, 14th President of the United States, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (JCS Commander) and Supreme EDEN Military Commander.

Before eRepublik "adjusted" newspaper subscriber numbers, The Federalist Papers had over 3000 well earned subs. Gaius' last article, What eRepublik has become is dated Day 976, in which he reviews what had attracted him to the game and how eRepublik Rising (V2) had devolved the game to a gold hungry time sink lacking strategy or motivation. He was one of many who quit playing eRepublik in disgust, as well as general burnout from having become so overwhelmingly immersed in it.

Before we read about it in The Federalist Papers, before we find it in a forum post, before most players even hear about it at all, the WHPR presents an exclusive interview with one of the great legends of eRepublic.

Your profile page shows you as a New Zealander.. Two questions on that-- were you one of those who went to NZ when it was first created, as a new and hopeful fresh start...? And... you gonna come home to the US? Bet you'd get your citizenship approved in a minute.
I woke up in NZ. Last I remember I was in Corea Del Norte, or wherever I was fighting for EDEN Mobile Corps.

Wow... not just a location change, but the game popped your citizenship to NZ..?
Are you just coming back today, or have you lurked around and got your bearings before making any noise?

I checked in every once in a while to talk to my Euro friends. Also, I have been watching Pfeiffer, and he has been a very bad boy.

Are you broke? Moving tickets are outdated now, we generally just pay the $20 per zone to Admin when we move around.. I'd be honored as hell to pay your fare home.
Nah, I had money enough in my profile. I'll be coming home soon. Just gotta get my bearings.. don't wanna rush in.

Your Euro friends..?
vingaer, shoot, st00r, durruti...
(Note: If readers are checking citizenships, all those countries were strong allies at the time.)
American "oldfags" you plan to get in touch with..?
I miss Jewitt. PigInZen, cool dude. Leroy, cool. Scrab, cool. HR (Harrison Richardson), always liked him.

You know your resurrection is going to rock America. MUs and Parties will be clamoring for you to join them, your name is going to look great on anyone's roster.
Seriously, right now I'm just getting my bearings and have no definite plans, except...
"Except..."??
I've been going over some of my old IRC logs, forum records, and Google Docs, and plan to release a lot of them. Certain people better be prepared.
That sounds kinda ominous.
It should, to some people.

Day 976 was a year and a half ago. Gaius Julius left at the top of his game. Now Rip Van Winkle wakes up to find he is a Level 25 Lt Colonel with 800 Strength-- same as a month old noob-- in a world so different than the one he left, it might as well be a different game.

Or is it?

There is no greatness, no adventure left to eRepublik. It used to house an intellectual community that actually played the game for more than "LOL HAIL X alliance/country" or "look mom I destroyed this country I hate in real life". These days it is populated by trolls and idiots who plod along to the beat of a few arrogant trolls drums. A new player today enters a world which seems to be more like a clone of the worst of real life than a "new world".

Wait... was that written a year and a half ago, or yesterday?
Will this incarnation of eRep, and the current generation of players, be interesting enough to keep this returning player in the game? Or will he fade out just as we've seen so many others?

Gaius Julius was great in his time. He seems to have a fire in his belly, a plan of action.. the kind of intense focus and determination we remember of him. But he is not a Messiah. He is not here to save us from ourselves.

Join us as we welcome back a respected elder, be helpful and supportive as he gets oriented to today's eRepublik, and do like he's doing, himself-- see what develops.

"Short of a ticker tape parade for the returning conquering hero, I join many Americans in welcoming Gaius Julius back to the game, and look forward to the excitement and activity he is sure to bring with him."
