What eRepublik has become

Jon stewart tries to explain eRepublik programming
So a long time ago I found a link to this game on Nation States. I clicked it and showed up at a website that promised me all kinds of things.
"Become President and lead your country to victory!"
"Own a business and grow your wealth"
"Become a media mogul"
I was excited about a lot of things, though the fact that I joined during Operation French Toast was a definite plus. At the time eRepublik was a welcome distraction from real life. The people seemed welcoming, the battles interesting and the game had so much to offer. eRepublik was about how an individual could make a difference in a party, a community or the world. At the time eRepublik still had bugs, exploits and glitches (lol@ trivia exploits), just like it does now. However, at its core eRepublik still rewarded those who were innovative and energetic. On top of this, eRepublik did not limit ones ability to succeed depending on how much they are willing to spend.

Trivia great idea or greatest idea?
Moving on eRepublik evolved and grew almost alongside of my citizen. The apex and high point of eRepublik coincided with my own citizens success and prominence. World War Three was the greatest success of eRepublik. Most countries (with the exception of Poland, Serbia and a few outliers) had more players during and immediately after the war than they do now. WW III was also important because despite all of the random border changes, retreat bugs and suspicious gold, eRepublik stood true to the idea that those who innovate will still succeed.

Confederate States of America
Now we have reached the third act of eRepublik. The so called "eRepublik Rising", this is where we have to ask ourselves a few questions. Have the admins stayed true to anything that made eRepublik great? No
Instead they have shoved a half finished Beta down our throats which has numerous bugs. A whole country will have troubles for months because the admins could not correct a simple RW bug. The war module shows little to no creativity in terms of design or actual tactics, and can be summarized by the basic mantra of "ATTACK EVERYTHING, SPEND ALL TEH GOLDZ". Yet even this idea breaks under basic strain. Multiple times countries have lacked an attack button. Rising or v2, was supposed to be a great rebirth of eRepublik . It was supposed to show that somehow the people who design this game somehow still know how to said task.

Countries which cannot into RL, generally tend to into eRep
There is no greatness, no adventure left to eRepublik. It used to house an intellectual community that actually played the game for more than "LOL HAIL X alliance/country" or "look mom I destroyed this country I hate in real life". These days it is populated by trolls and idiots who plod along to the beat of a few arrogant trolls drums. A new player today enters a world which seems to be more like a clone of the worst of real life than a "new world". However, who is to blame for what eRepublik has become. Well us, You and I keep playing something that resembles a stitched together piece of shoddy programming rather than a "game". We keep believing that the admins will get better but they don't. In my honest opinion eRepublik is a shadow of its former self, and it would be getting better anytime soon.

Don't know why I keep coming back

Trololol
Well said
I concur
sad but true
Nice article.
You're right, as usual.
boated
I am saddened right now, by a string of events. And I believe the cause is due to the admins and the direction they have chosen. First time I've felt this bad about this game.
Well, I don't know that it's true to say they aren't going to get better. I stopped playing for about 7 months and recently rejoined before the V2 switch. I was surprised to find a number of changes... well... to be honest, the only change I recall from that whole time was the addition of citizenship. I can't think of a single other frockin thing of note that they updated...
this is not what we started playing... v2 sucks......

concerning the destruction of a whole country due to bugs - maybe it's not to late http://www.erepublik.com/en/wars/show/26[..]/2662
BeDva I was talking about how the admins restarted those RWs, now even if we win them Croatia will have open CS.
ha, voted, nice article GJ
nice article, I also don't know why I keep playing everyday, but at least now I have a goal to continue playing.
I disagree actually. I think the game has gotten a lot better (despite the bugs). A player has much more options for customizing his elife in eRepublic. And for once, you have to think of other strategies besides the fortress strategy. The wall was lame and it was discouraging that people were obsessing over it so much instead of just having a little fun and giving the noobies the chance to fight in their own states.
In the v1 version a player only had three choices: President, tank or Max McFarland.
If anybody ruins a game, it's the few people who take it much too seriously.
True... all true.
Nice article GJ. This is pretty true. It's the reason I fell off the grid for quite a while. I'm not joking you when I say I was inspired by a few people who want to bring back some sexy to this game. Since they're willing to put in the work to make it better, I'm willing to dig my feet in and help them.
We need a thug paradise. A place where us old school players can just kick it. eSingapore anyone?
that's why I stopped caring. This game is just one giant gold sink
oh how I hate the admin
@ Gulden North Corea is where it's at
this isn´t the same game i started to play 1 year ago. i´ll give it a few more weeks and then i´ll probably quit.
Funny thing, when Plato was officially removed was the first time I considered quitting.
This is not the game I signed for.
Trololol
And Blame Canada!
Good ideas, bad implementation, this could be a good explanation of what eRepublik is. A huge amount of corrections and changes should be implemented if admins still want current players keep playing.
I miss the Triva.
Btw Russia borders 14 countries, that was something every top eRepublik player would answer within 5 seconds.
Let's just remove the battle module and the economy module and just keep the forums, the media and add the New Hot Trivia Rising which will give you a picture of a half naked women if you either answer all questions correct within 5 seconds or pay up 1,79 gold.
v2 was released v2soon.
It's really a shame
I actually liked trivia
Oh poor little Americans:)
In V1 you could buy 140g for RL money and tank like hell for lets say - 15 mins. Great! You could made around 60 000 dmg to a ,,wall,, - or even more if you buy more virtual gold for real money and train with Napoleon every day.
That`s history. Today, you actually need to PLAY and THINK for that gold you are buying.
And that`s not fair?
Maybe to you.
Today, this game, actually war module, is more for PLAYERS and less for PAYERS. I know that sucks in your eyes, but that is true.
Otherwise eCroatia would still be on the map and eCalifornia wouldn`t be in eRussia at the moment.
True Article.
Voted
loser's speech.
@Pokac
Not really, you are wrong. I don't buy gold, I won't buy gold cause I m not an idiot. This game is for PAYERS cause I can do shit without gold. That's truth, glad you have enough time and money to play this, I don't wanna waste my life in front of PC waiting for 'ATTENTION, ATTENTION'.
mods didn't truly ruin the game... the douchebags did!
V
Vejderr,
I haven`t pay for a game in my life, nor I ever will. Why would I give my real money for something virtual?
Time is something that you can organize if you know how - and I can spend an hour or two every day for this game. Maybe more sometimes, cause I don`t watch TV, I don`t play other games, I don`t like Facebook - so I can.
eSerbs are better organized and better motivated, so will win against credit cards every time. Cause we have many players and we can fight in shifts and fight without loosing money.
All that PAYERS can do is PAY. They need to learn to play.
Nice article, I'm completely discouraged with this game. Simple was better. I don't have hours to spend on a game I used to play 10 minutes per day. I wish I had prepaid for my eFuneral, because I'm running out of gold.
@Pokac
Seriously, you are wrong. Also 2hours is a lot : p
Vejderr,
between your 2 comments is a gap of almost 2 hours. So I guess that you visit eRep as much as I do - or at least that you stay in front of PC for that period of time.
My job is to be near PC - what`s your excuse?
And who is wrong, time will tell:) Right now it looks like money can`t win any important battle. Numbers and good organization can.
@Pokac
You seem to be following the "Serb's guide to trolling a US player". Your argument is full of fallacies, they are as follows:
-All US players buy lots of gold.
This assumption is grossly incorrect, the US has had a few prominent players (Max and Josh mostly) who have spent a lot of gold for mostly personal gain. Most US citizens who frequent our forums have been boycotting buying gold since the famous "its not over till the fat lady sings" decision. It also assumes that all US players are rich, cool blatant and arrogant talking point. Also I have seen Russia and Hungary spend a lot of gold so far in v2 ^__^
-US players are not organized
Once again a blatant problem. While I will happily admit that the huns and serbs are by far the best organized countries in this game. The US is probably one of the best organized EDEN countries. The main problem we have is that this game is one where time zones win. The US players have had the disadvantage of having almost every major battle end on europe time.
-All US players are stupid.
You hint at this with side remarks. Cool assumptions and blatant buying into ignorant views.
If you had bothered to read my article you would see that your kind of trolling is exactly what I am lamenting. Maybe read some of Zoli's old articles and learn what intellectual trolling is about.
Kisses,
Gaius
Gaius, I'm glad you haven't left yet. \o/
@Gaius Julius, was trivia a great idea or the greatest idea?
Porosus greatest idea, of course, I always wanted to know "how many freshwater ports are there in Argentina?"
Also you never pm me witty comments anymore
I shall resume the sending of witty comments in 2 weeks time. Can you say Boundary Waters?
O_O hero <3
@Gaius_Julius: You Keep Coming Back because of the FED PARTY just so you know
Voted so hard
and it wouldn't be getting better anytime soon
yup!
Voted hard. Lots of people would hate to see you go Gaius, but deep down I bet even more wish that you would leave while you still have some good memories of the game. I don't think anybody truly believes that it is going to get better. But I hope the admins surprise me, I really do.
eAmericans stay for the people, the game is just a framework, but as recent events have proved, it is unimportant. No matter how buggy or gold hungry it gets, the eUSA will continue because our people are smart and funny. If it was about the game, everyone would have ragequit. the game sucks relative to other options, but attracts people who are interesting. If your want good games Call of Duty or sid meiers civilisation come to mind, or rainbow6. CoD you have have groups and tactics and voice.
erep sucks as a game, so very few eAmericans buy gold, because if you use tactics and do everything right, you are gaurunteed to be hit by a bug. So no one really cares anymore, we just want to read what other eAm are saying.
@Pokac
That's just funny. 2hours gap bcos I wasn't near to PC, that's obvious. Otherwise my reply 'd come 10 mins after your comment :o
Make use of your brain, please.
I was here. I had some disagreements. But I didn't care enough to share them so I left.
You really do like Jon
The smart players have all moved on. Compare our media to the media before the invasion to see thee truth of this.
GJ is the win.
I blame it on the servs.
I think what needs to happen here is every single country - Hungary, Russia, Serbia, Indonesia - needs to be invaded and ravaged at least twice - then we would see how they talk big about how organized they were and how they don't need to spend any of their own money. They think it is somehow "cool" to gang up on the Great Satan. And all you do is make the eUSA more ungovernable, more cliqueish and insufferable. Well done, but it is high time the cat starts eating itself.
Orange Juluis. lawl, i voted and subed, you sir are a true christian.... and a geek....
"The war module shows little to no creativity in terms of design or actual tactics, and can be summarized by the basic mantra of "ATTACK EVERYTHING, SPEND ALL TEH GOLDZ""
Lolwhat. And attacking a wall was tactical? Everything you could do against that wall can be done here, coordination, timing, knowing when and where to strike. Only it can be done much more dynamically. This isnt even Subjective, its just the situation. Now we have an entire board to deal with, area's upon it to consider, terrain buffs, Unit types. Its much more complex now.
Look, i know there's alot of whining about V2's war module.
And im not saying its perfect, or even well made.
But lets not try and say it lacks tactics, when the previous incarnation of the module could hardly employ any kind of tactic beyond "Ok attack this area, at this time.". As for people -using- tactics? Our enemies sure are.
The last battle in croatia was about to be won in our favor until the -last half hour- where hundreds of them poured in through the south and north, converged and flanked the people in middle field and then in their combined force, pushed through the bridge as their helicopters harassed troops passed the river, being the only unit that can cross river terrain without a bridge.
They knew exactly what they were doing, they were coordinated.
My question is why aren't we, nearly as much?
Oh i know the answer..
Another thing: When did we all sign up for Evony? I feel like that's what we're playing when they have "hot" virtual chicks on every other page. Is that really what the admins think is important to get players?
Hmm, this old beta and v1 player is not happy with the news..
/kevi
you got that right...
Good article
v
Daniel C Heretic, actually units don't really matter much, i have seen russian infantry kill our tanks and i have killed a few of theirs. terrain buffs are kinda the same way, useless.
moving on.
gold gets you no where which is good cause i never used gold. but everyone i have fought has. russian infantry buying the best attack booster, serb forces tanks using the armor one (i say serb forces cause i know it was their allies with the most tanks but unsure of which one) i like the new war system in this even though it has moments of buggyness. turns sometimes get skipped, but oh well you move on eventually. new tactics, yes you must think now, and so far our random militia > our military, for the civilians seem more organized than them in the field and in tactics in irc or not from what i have seen.
in short, really just adapt to this. its not hard.
►►►SIGN & SHOUT◄◄◄ eCroatian AntiPTO Petition http://tinyurl.com/antiPTO-petition
Old war module sucked. It was like being a pawn in a game of chess. Fun for the player, not the pawn. This new one is far superior and I'm sure the bugs will be fixed in time. The only major problem I can see with it is that the damned turns are too long. Seriously, reduce to one minute plzpolzp[lzplzplz. Other then that, I see no reason to bitch about it.
Pokac, your pretty much dead wrong about the battlefield favoring the player over the payer. All you have to do is look at all the For Pay options that are available and you'll see that its a Payers world and the Players are at the disadvantage unless they have been around forever or have governments that set up large multi farms to mine gold (Which eSerbia has been shown to have done in most SE Asian nations).
I suggest that you change the flavor of the koolaid your drinking because clearly the one you've got is Jim Jones brand.
