Darkside of Roleplay - UKRP Party Review
Topher Fair
This week I'm going to look at the state of the UK, with each article focusing on one of our political parties.
Last week I interviewed the Party Presidents of the top five parties and while I've not been around for a few years, I saw many of the same names and the same issues as when I played long ago. So while I may be slightly out of the loop and would appreciate lots of comments (positive and negative!), I think I can also be quite neutral about the current situation.
I asked the Party Presidents about their policies and how they thought they were different to the other parties. It was quite obvious, and several agreed, that really our political parties are just cliques of friends. However I think they have a little more depth than that... let's start with the United Kingdom Reform Party - UKRP...
UKRP are the oldest surviving UK political party and were founded back in 2008 to save the then broken UK from our first and very inactive CP. They ruled unopposed until they were overtaken by TUP, the second oldest party, in 2009.
UKRP are a clique who love traditions, hieracies and rules. They go for the "cultural victory" where everyone holds similar sorts of attitudes to them and follows their structures, influencing future governments of other parties for years to come.
UKRP brings a number of positive qualities to eUK:
* They add a little spice to the game with comedy articles, if you enjoy seeing Monthy Python or Yes Minister jokes copy and pasted with the names changed, these are your guys.
* While the appeal is a mystery to me, they reward friendly players with made up earldoms and lordships, keeping a certain sort of player interested for maybe longer than they would otherwise.
* "Legislation" to create rules designed to guard against rogue Country Presidents and Ministers stealing all of the country's money. Under their rule the treasury is safe and unnessesary risks are blocked.
UKRP have also caused great damage to the UK:
* Their articles can be tedious and alien, many players new and old will have no idea what they are talking about. Pretty sure I saw someone claiming to be the Earl of London last week and I have no idea what that's about, it REALLY entertains a handful of odd people but I wonder how many players nope out from their weirdness.
* Their rules can be intentionally confusing and restrictive so only the people who wrote them can make any changes, this paralyses governments. Go have a look at the bizarre latin legal documents on their forums. There have also been many cases of UKRP players stealing the treasury and justifying it using their own rules.
* When you are playing an elaborate game of your own making, it can be easy to forget to actually log into the actual website and push some buttons. Worse, the people who climb UKRP's heirarchy then get put forward for actual important positions in the eUK government without experience actually doing anything.
Last week I was delighted to see hardly any of the typical UKRP jerking themselves off with the weird articles and complicated rules. Great!
However we do have another UKRP promoted beyond his ability with Dishmcds, who has run away to join the ranks of UK players whose little brother logged in, got their laptop stolen or got hit by a bus and needed to be impeached (all these things apparently happened to various players; they didn't).
The sad thing is that he will reappear in a few months with his fake IRL issues solved and run again because he needs to be the top of the UKRP and UK pyramid, you'll all let him!

quite the honest take on UKRP. Could be a bit more detailed with links or screenies to back up your claims, but apart from that, a good attempt.
An honest take of UKRP a year ago maybe. Now? It's a shell of its former self. Like all parties (except UKPP of course) it's coasting along on past achievements and glories.
Will that change? Probably not.
true, but Goku has only just risen from the eGrave so I understand why he's a bit behind the times.
Personally I don't see it, but what would I know...
That being said it's at least gone through the motions of attempting to show both sides, even if neither representation is exactly (although there is the occasional smattering of truth in there!).
Leo suggests this was a year ago. I'd suggest it's much much further back than that.
at least 5 years, for a party that likes to reform, you rarely do.
It's often hard to see from inside of the circle jerk.
So why did you elect Dishmcds? Looks like the old hierarchy is alive and well.
Dish came back active and enthusiastic. Any oldfag that does that wins elections by default. Similar to when I lost to Arrlo, whenever I did that. Probably a quite a long while ago now. Dude was back in UK after fannying around in foreign places for god knows how long and won easily, I got curb stomped.
It's just how it goes.
apart from me Rob 🙁
I lost my comeback election... to fucking AMD!
AMD's a weird outlier where he wins every election despite each term of his getting progressively either worse or more boring.
Or at least that was the case before I left for a bit, idk about the one you're referring to 'cause I wasn't there.
Jesus... that'd be 8 years of screenshots from RoadRunnerSpeed & Hassan stealing the treasury to roleplayer in chief Sir Humpherey Appleby being multiple time CP on the back of his experience as nine time fake lawyer. It's all anecdotal evidence here!
Fair enough wit the out of date, I logged in last year and definitly saw Appleby and Woldy shite, glad it's stopped if it has.
it's coming to an end I feel...
good troll

Your positive qualities are like 2 years old lmao have you not seen a recent UKRP article?

We haven't used legislation in a while afaik, I effectively run congress PMs but it's all done sans legislation and if anybody asked me to hold a vote on something like that I'd refuse to do so. Admittedly if I was pressured I'd use the legal loophole of there not being any legislation binding me to hold votes on legislation but that's more just trolling, really.
The "Earl of London" is this guy:

Who is um... TUP.
Overall: Quality sh*tpost I give it an 8/10 for comedy value.
Clearly following UKRP ethics though 🙂
I didn't realise we even had a code of ethics, I try to go for utilitarianism myself but I'm pretty sure that's what most opt for regardless of party
*fallout intro*
Goku. Goku never changes
So... like... what is the darkside of it?
And don't pretend you don't like Roleplay ^_~
The disadvantages section?
I was hoping more for an expose after the headline though, most of that stuff is long gone really
Maybe it's just me, and yeah I do remember there was some nonsense elite cabal agenda going on way back, but the meta roleplay was pretty fun.
The game had pretty much nothing else going for it at all back then without it, bar clicking once or twice a day in coordinated attacks. It's still not got much going for it tbf, if we hadn't all made identities and fictitious groups with their own roleplayed culture and history I doubt most of us would still be here.
Anyway nice to see you back been a fair upsurge in oldies returning lately
PCP is the oldest party .. Proof look at the party number!
It's certainly an interesting analysis and we need to leave out any personal animosity some may have with the author when considering the lessons to be learned. I would argue that the "Constitutional Dictatorship" period we had in the eUK provided much needed stability and security which if you consider the events before and since can now be described as one of the best periods in eUK history - certainly of my time of proper involvement ie since April 2014.
I may be wrong, as I wasn't around during the "Constitutional Dictatorship", but from the articles and comments that I read during the time, it's my opinon that, that period is a leading cause of the eUK's apathy today.
simple coincidence why you disappeared around when we introduced that system...
I disappeared before you brought that in, I think. I can't remember a Woldy battle. If you play with self enforced rules, you narrow your scope on what you can do. I think that played a big part in the 'death' of the eUK.
Some people I assume will look back at that time with fondness, but eUK's drop in performance would suggest to me that many more didn't.
Preposterous.
