A Nostalgic Lookback by Melissa Rose, Party President

Wow, It’s been a month already?

I have really enjoyed my time as Party President. My focus for this month was to bring as many two clickers out of the game, onto the boards, and into leadership, as I possibly could. On that note we have been very successful.

Thanks to the efforts of my FedEx/Recruitment director Blame My Doppelganger, We have seen an influx of newly activated board accounts. These players are the lifeblood of the party. They are truly the hope for or longevity.

I was very lucky to have such an active leadership team. Every one of them did great work for the party and together we brought new life and new activity to the boards.

I’ll give one bit of advice to the next Party President, keep it up. Good recruitment is the crux of what keeps our party #1 and it is the main thing that will sustain us.

Thank you all for a wonderful month.

I asked Valk What he wanted to write this week, and he decided to write something of his own, from his heart.

What’s the point?

What’s the point of eRepublik, and why do we play it? Melissa Rose wrote an excellent article the other day about nostalgia towards the game and that got me thinking about how and why I started in the first place.

I didn’t come looking for eRepublik or even a game that much like it. I actually ended up on this Wikipedia page during my quest to find an intelligence agency type game (if you know of one, please reach out because I’m still looking). After checking out the page about it though, I decided to give it a try. The concept was interesting, and it seemed very accessible. As with most games I play, I tried to do my research on what I should be doing and how to best start off. The initial experience was decent and I had a couple people set me on the right path pretty quickly. I also had a couple people reach out to me with offers to join their party. This got me focused on looking at the political module instead of just fighting and making food as I was initially content to do. In retrospect, that decision definitely kept me around, as the other modules would have gotten very repetitive quickly and undoubtedly lead to me leaving the game within a few days. I decided to get involved in the politics, so I ended up joining the Federalist Party (that initial search for the right fit and my process of deciding what party to join can be found here).

As anyone involved in eRepublik, but especially the political module can attest, it primarily comes down not to game mechanics, or knowing what buttons need pressed, but to the social aspect. Without the political perspective, the military and economic modules are nothing more than a few button presses that lack any sense of direction or purpose. The game provides the framework, but out of game forums, IRC, and media are what make the political module work. It survives and dies on one thing, social interaction. When people leave the game, you lose that interaction and it stagnates. But, as Melissa recognized, the reverse is also true. New players coming into the game allow for fresh takes on ideas and a revitalization of the community. This is why it is important to have an atmosphere that is welcoming and supportive of new growth.

So why do we play eRepublik? If the game was dying, isn’t it all just a waste of time and effort? I don’t think so. We build connections, get an opportunity to talk to people all over the planet who share similar interests, improve social and leadership skills, and hopefully have some fun along the way. What it all comes down to is that this game and our experience here is only what we make of it. Getting involved is easy and is just a matter of stepping up and asking where you can help. For those of us new to the game, if we hold on to it and decide we aren’t ready for it to go away, it is up to us to make that happen by contributing to it and keeping the game alive.
