I prefer the metric system, but putting the date before the month makes a lot of sense;
it goes from smallest to biggest

~30 days
2014+ years

But days are smaller than months, which are smaller than years. DD/MM/YY, short, longer, longest.

Here's something to consider - it is the exact reverse of how we write time. HH:MM😒S - long, shorter, shortest. To write it as HH😒S:MM would be terribly confusing.
