USA-Canada A Personal Reflection

Day 2,305, 22:10 Published in USA USA by Tyler Bubblar

July 26, 2009 that's the day I created Tyler Buublar, (note it was intended to be Bubblar but I typed too fast and didn't have the gold to change it when I finally noticed) and stepped foot into the eWorld. The war between PEACE and EDEN was raging. The USA at the time wasn't an official part of EDEN, but they and their close friend Canada were closely aligned. In those days it was EDEN and the Brolliance (USA/Canada) fighting a war of liberation against PEACE. Game mechanics made having a close friend on your northern border highly advantageous. Even after things began to sour with EDEN we remained close.

When I made my exit from erep in 2010 the Brolliance seemed to me that it would be a permanent fixture. One thing that this game has is things change. When I returned in April of 2013 our brothers to the north were wiped, and strangely no one seemed to care. Occasionally independent MUs would start and win Canadian RW's, but within a short period of time Spain would reclaim the freed regions. As a recent returned noob it was confusing. I was told that Canada had changed, and that game mechanics as well had changed, altering the dynamics. Still it struck me as a shame. Then finally a NAP was signed and Canada reappeared on the map.

Some have said that the official rationale for war with Canada (they must stop interfering with our Foreign Affairs and drop their Serbian MPP) is both weak and contradictory. On the surface yes it's a bit weak and hypocritical/contradictory. I'd like to take you on a journey behind the curtains of government. I've served in the last several administrations. I was DHS for NewAzazel, DHS, dMoFA, and MoFA for WildOwl. I witnessed the constant aggravation and friction Canadian interference caused.

Let's revisit the last half year or so. Canada after a very long occupation by Spain (Spain was more than willing to come to the table sooner) signs a NAP with Spain. Shortly after we here in the eUS sign a NAP with the UK to secure a rental agreement, Canada decides they're bored and break their NAP and attacks the UK. When things inevitably turned against them ghey turn to the eUS for help. Our response was basically "we have a NAP with Spain, Poland, and the UK our hands are tied." to which they responded to paraphrase "F*&k you then we'll MPP with Serbia"

During the months the eUSA government worked to secure peace and better relations with Spain, Poland, and the UK our northern neighbors constantly and unfailingly attempted to insert themselves into that process. As I said before a source of no small irritation to the Presidents I served under. They broke their NAP with the very countries we were working to befriend, and were outraged when we didn't back them. All of these things were noted, disliked, and ultimately let go by the executive. The mpp with Serbia was however, not something that could or would be overlooked. As I said at the start of this article things change. Pretty much the one constant enemy we've had in eRepublik is Serbia. They attempted and partially succeeded in PTOing us. At one time they had a large number of Congressional seats, and did everything they could to disrupt the government. Rogue natural enemy proposals, tax rate proposals, CP, impeachment, money transfer proposals, and importing more enemy combatants to swell their ranks all regular occurrences that made conducting the basic business of the government difficult. In short because we declined to join Canada in the breaking of NAPS with our now allies they decided to embrace the one nation in this game they knew would be taken as a threat. This threat has been taken seriously.

In conclusion as much as I and no doubt many others miss the bromance of the defunct Brolliance, I see no other route we could have taken. The mpp with Serbia was a shot across the bow of the eUSA, and we've responded with force. As an added benefit Canada possesses bonuses that will help fuel our economy. I'm not involved with the current administration but I believe the plan is to wipe Canada, absorb the bulk of their tax income, make use of their bonuses and bleed their already meager treasury dry. I doubt a NAP that our neighbors have proven they'll violate without a second thought will be pursued anytime soon. Traditional diplomacy is unlikely to solve the USA/Canadian problem.
