World indoor championships started in Istanbul

Day 1,571, 02:04 Published in Belgium Belgium by Cooke4444
The first heats and competitions of the hepta/pentathlon have opened the world indoor championships. Expectations for Belgian and, our beloved invaders, Dutch athletes.

Good news for Belgium already on the first hours of the first day. Jan van den Broeck and Tia Hellebaut go their next round. For van den Broeck it's the semi-final of the 800m after winning his own heat. Tia Hellebaut has some porblems, but cleared the qualification height on her second attempt (1m95).

Other news from the first day is the good start in the pentathlon for Jessica Ennis in the 60m hurdles. We can expect a duel here between her and the Russian Chernova.

(A win for Chernova last year)

Now the expectations for the Belgian athletes. Eline Berings seems back in her good form. The former European champion on the 60m hurdles tries to go for the semi finals. Of course, hurdles aren't forgiving, so she can't afford a mistake.

Jan van den Broeck's championships are already excellent. But on a championship, everything is possible in semi-long/long distances, as tactics are very important. Maybe a final is possible, and in that final, anything could happen.

Question mark Tia Hellebaut was able to qualify for the final only just. Chicherova seems outstanding, but as we all know Hellebaut, championships are her speciality. If it comes to a mental battle, she mostly superior. But for the moment, a medal seems the highest possible.

On the Dutch side, Rutger Smith is in the shot put final, with a throw of 20.21m (6th place). He needs 68cm more to break his own national record. A medal is probably too high for him.

Belgian Eline Berings gets a heavy fight with Sharona Bakker. The Dutch debutante is going for the final and has a better time than the Belgian for the moment. It's going to be a close call in the heats...

The Dutch have two female sprinters on the 60m. Jamile Samuel and Dafne Schippers will have to prove themselves saturday in the heats. A semi final doesn't seem possible, but at such a short distance, the starting reaction is everything.

Who's interested in athletics: don't expect to see something on TV on a decent hour. Belgian tv makes resumés on friday and saturday around midnight. Sunday they go live at Istanbul. Dutch tv doesn't seem interested as there is no sign of a schedule. Even BBC 1 or 2 doesn't show athletics, which is quite weird for an athletics-loving country. But in the end... The Olympics are far more important, and a lot of stars aren't participating indoor (Bolt, Vlasic,...)
