Join the new world

My next guest in our series is someone known for his sharp comments, his clear perspective on Israeli matters and his work in the background. His drive is our well being as a country and its performance. I welcome Augustus Grim!

Please tell something about yourself, your RL age, what you like to do in your free time, outside eRepublik?

As some people know, I'm very secretive about my real life... I won't even tell my name 😛
But I'm a RL Israeli, and outside eRepublik, I like to write (books), play (music) and think (thoughts 😛)

Alright, nice and stealthy, haha. How did you find this game, and where did you start of? Did you find Israel an interesting country or where there deeper motivations to be in eIsrael?

I heard of this game a long time ago. Back then, it was just one of those browser games. A few months before I joined, I became interested in politics, leadership, and multiplayer games which give you deeper social interactions. So I looked for games which featured these things, and eventually, I found eRepublik. I considered several countries that I like IRL, but eventually I just chose my RL country - Israel.

Could you elaborate on your character name “Augustus Grim”? Im sure there is a story behind it?

Well, linguistics is one of my major hobbies. Certainly an esoteric one, but what can you do? I chose my name based on the names of two famous linguists, both of them German: August Schleicher and Jacob Grimm (who is better known as one of the Brothers Grimm). I accidentally misspelled Grimm when I signed up, and that yielded Grim 🙂

Tell us, what are the exact duties of a vChief of Staff on a normal day?

Well... I'm not sure myself XD I basically offered Rickolas to help with things in the government, or in the eIDF, before the elections. So after the elections, I found myself helping in the eIDF. I'm part of the eIDF command team. We think of new ways to improve the army, solve problems and are responsible for orders and for the smooth daily routine. Right now, you can see I'm a member of a different unit - we're using this unit for a new eIDF project, which will hopefully be properly explained in an article soon.

You have a reputation of being a critic of mediocre Governments and someone who is not afraid of pointing this out. What is your motivation to do so?

From the moment I joined the game, I knew I have one goal: to improve eIsrael. It didn't take me much time to realize all the things wrong with our country: bad relations with other countries; same old people ruling the country; and basically, not much thinking behind actions. That's why I got involved in politics as soon as I could. Since my goal is to improve things, I always say what I think is right for the country. No one here is better than anyone else, so I try to hear other people and have my voice heard. I think the only way for improvement, in both RL and in the game, is healthy, open, clean discussion. And sometimes, I also find arguing with people a fun exercise 😃

Who would you call your opponent in eRepublik and why?

My opponent? I don't think I have one particular opponent, and I don't want to have one, either, because that would mean I don't listen to them and they don't listen to me. But the person I dislike most in eIsrael is ArikAharon. At first, I was just a critic of his government; but after his dirty campaign in June and his PTO, I saw that even if a fraction of him is really interested in eIsrael's good, he is mostly just power hungry, and the PTO proved that he's willing to do anything to gain that power, even if it means hurting eIsrael.

A question I ask everyone is, what in your experience makes a good President? Which characters are essential?

A good president, both in RL and in eRep, should have two things: he should care for his country and its ideals above all, and he should know what's the right thing for his country, both in the short term and in the long term. If someone has these two qualities, they will know what to do, and they will be able to do it. That's pretty general, of course; knowing what's best for the country usually requires experience in the government, open thinking, and a good understanding of the environment they're working here (in this case, eRep diplomacy and mechanics).

What are the latest developments in the eIDF? And why isn’t the eIDF staff using the eIDF newspaper to update the public?

Well, I guess I accidentally answered that earlier xD. Since the beginning of Rickolas's term, we've been working on reforming the eIDF's structure. Personally, I supported the old 4-unit structure; but I don't think we should change it back, because then every new president would be allowed to change it every month, causing instability. So we re-organized Sayeret Matkal, and as I said, we are now working on a boot camp project, with the help of the MoI. We're also working on reorganizing the big eIDF unit into several regiments, with their own commanders, to increase activity and communication. And there's also the supplies: they're much smoother now, and we've finally made the transition to Q7.
As for newspaper updates, sorry, I don't know anything about that, but when our new projects are ready, you will be notified 🙂

Apparently it is everyone’s dream to become CP, when will we see you running?

In fact, I've wanted to become CP since my first day in the game. I considered running several times in the last few months, and I guess I still come to consider it every month. But in the last two months, I've grown a bit tired of all the work, so I decided to take a bit of a break. It isn't going that well – I guess I'm addicted – but I don't think I'm going to run for CP soon. However, if I find myself aiming for CP again, I might run in a few months.

On request I will ask you what your “Golden Moment” in eRepublik was till so far?

Golden moment…? I have no idea, really. I guess the most exciting moment was one night in August, when we were losing a Saudi RW. I stayed on IRC with tsahi, Ido, rom and Rickolas from midnight to 2 AM, and we tried to get anything to win. I got a BH and almost got another one (it was taken by Doreen Christopple, who practically saved us at the end of the round), and rom, Ido, tsahi and other eIsraelis did their best to win. Rickolas started giving supplies to people for fighting for us, but we were still losing… And then he told us he called all the Greeks on Teamspeak, and that was it. I started seeing Greeks hitting hard one after another, and we won the last round easily, 83-82. An amazing moment of true brotherhood.
(and I also proposed the Sergeant Autumn impeachment that night)

How do you think the rest of eRepublik look upon the eIsraeli?

I don't think they like us very much. What they probably see is a torn, selfish, meaningless country. We sort of deserve that, too. I think the most important thing is to start hitting harder for our allies. Rickolas is doing well on this front, giving our allies' battles a higher priority than in previous months, but there's still room for improvement. And most importantly, we should realize that we only deserve our allies' help if we help them, so it's time to initiate things and start hitting harder for allies, especially when they're wiped before congress elections.

אוקיי, נחמד וחמקמק, חחח. איך מצאת את המשחק הזה, ואיפה התחלת? האם מצאת את ישראל מדינה מעניינת או שהיו מניעים עמוקים יותר להיות באי-ישראל?

שמעתי על המשחק הזה לפני הרבה זמן. אז זה עוד היה רק אחד ממשחקי הדפדפן ההם. כמה חודשים לפני שנרשמתי, התחלתי להתעניין בפוליטיקה, מנהיגות, ומשחקי רשת שנותנים לך אינטראקציות חברתיות עמוקות יותר. אז חיפשתי משחקים שהיו בהם את הדברים האלה, ובסופו של דבר מצאתי את אירפבליק. חשבתי על כמה מדינות שאני אוהב במציאות, אבל בסוף פשוט בחרתי במדינה שלי בחיים האמיתיים – ישראל.

אתה יכול להרחיב על השם של השחקן שלך, "אוגוסטוס גרים"? אני בטוח שיש סיפור מאחוריו?

ובכן, בלשנות היא אחד החביבים העיקריים שלי. בהחלט תחביב אזוטרי, אבל מה אפשר לעשות? בחרתי בשם על בסיס השמות של שני בלשנים מפורסמים, שניהם גרמנים: אוגוסט שלייכר ויאקוב גרים (הידוע בתור אחד מהאחים גרים). טעיתי באיות של Grimm כשנרשמתי, והתוצאה הייתה Grim 🙂

ספר לנו, מה הן בדיוק החובות של אלוף ביום רגיל?

ובכן... אני בעצמי לא בטוח XD בעיקרון הצעתי לריקולס לעזור עם עניינים בממשלה, או בצה"ל, לפני הבחירות. אז אחרי הבחירות, מצאתי את עצמי עוזר בצה"ל. אני חלק מצוות הפיקוד של צה"ל. אנחנו חושבים על דרכים חדשות לשפר את הצבא ולפתור בעיות, ואנחנו אחראים לפקודות ולשגרה היומית החלקה. כרגע, אתה יכול לראות שאני חבר ביחידה אחרת – אנחנו משתמשים ביחידה הזאת לפרויקט חדש של צה"ל, שאני מקווה שיוסבר בכתבה בקרוב.

אתה ידוע בתור אחד שמבקר ממשלות בינוניות ושאינו פוחד להצביע על כך. מה המניע שלך?

מהרגע שהצטרפתי למשחק הזה, ידעתי שיש לי מטרה אחת: לשפר את אי-ישראל. לא לקח לי זמן רב להבין את כל הבעיות במדינה שלנו: יחסים גרועים עם מדינות אחרות; אותם אנשים מנהלים את המדינה לנצח; ובעיקרון, לא הרבה חשיבה מאחורי המעשים. זו הסיבה שנכנסתי לפוליטיקה בהקדם האפשרי. ומאחר והמטרה שלי היא לשפר את העניינים, אני תמיד אומר את מה שלדעתי נכון למדינה. אף אחד פה לא יותר טוב מאף אחד אחר, אז אני מנסה לשמוע את דעותיהם של אנשים אחרים ולהשמיע את זאת שלי. אני חושב שהדרך היחידה לשיפור, גם בחיים האמיתיים וגם במשחק, היא דיון נקי, פתוח ובריא. ולפעמים, להתווכח עם אנשים זה גם תרגיל מהנה 😨

למי היית קורא היריב שלך באירפבליק ומדוע?

היריב שלי? אני לא חושב שיש לי יריב ספציפי, ואני לא רוצה שיהיה לי אחד, כי המשמעות של זה תהיה שאני לא אקשיב לו אף-פעם והוא לא יקשיב לי אף-פעם. אבל האדם שאני הכי פחות אוהב באי-ישראל הוא אריק אהרון. בהתחלה רק ביקרתי את הממשלה שלו, אבל אחרי הקמפיין המלוכלך שלו ביוני וה-PTO שלו, הבנתי שאפילו אם חלקיק ממנו באמת מעוניין בטובתה של אי-ישראל, הוא בעיקר פשוט תאב כוח, וה-PTO הוכיח שהוא מוכן לעשות הכול כדי להשיג את הכוח הזה, אפילו אם המשמעות היא פגיעה באי-ישראל.

שאלה שאני שואל את כולם היא, מה לדעתך דרוש לנשיא טוב? אילו תכונות נחוצות?

נשיא טוב, גם בחיים האמיתיים וגם באירפ, צריך שני דברים: הוא צריך לדאוג למדינה שלו ולאידיאלים שלה מעל הכוח, והוא צריך לדעת מה הדבר הנכון למדינה שלו, גם בטווח הקצר וגם בטווח הארוך. אם למישהו יש את שתי התכונות האלו, הוא תמיד ידע מה לעשות, ותמיד יהיה מוכן לעשות את זה. ההגדרה הזאת די כללית, כמובן; לדעת מה הכי טוב למדינה לרוב דורש ניסיון בממשלה, חשיבה פתוחה, והבנה טובה של הסביבה שעובדים בה (במקרה הזה, דיפלומטיה וחוקי המשחק).

מהן ההתפתחויות האחרונות בצה"ל? ומדוע הצוות של צה"ל לא משתמש בעיתון של צה"ל כדי לעדכן את הציבור?

ובכן, אני מניח שבטעות עניתי על זה מוקדם יותר xD. מאז תחילת הכהונה של ריקולס, אנחנו עובדים על רפורמה במבנה של צה"ל. אישית, אני תמכתי במבנה ארבע היחידות הישן; אבל אני לא חושב שאנחנו צריכים לחזור אליו, כי אז לכל נשיא חדש תהיה ללגיטימציה לשנות אותו כל חודש, מה שייצור אי-יציבות. אז ארגנו מחדש את סיירת מטכ"ל, וכמו שאמרתי, עכשיו אנחנו עובדים על פרויקט יחידה לטירונים, בשיתוף משרד הפנים. אנחנו עובדים גם על ארגון מחדש של היחידה הגדולה של צה"ל למספר מחלקות, עם מפקדים משלהן, כדי להגביר את הפעילות ואת התקשורת. ויש גם את עניין האספקה: היא עובדת הרבה יותר חלק עכשיו, וסוף-סוף עשינו את המעבר ל-Q 7.
בנוגע לעדכונים בעיתון, אני מצטער, אני לא יודע שום דבר על זה, אבל כשהפרויקטים החדשים שלנו מוכנים, ניידע אתכם 🙂

מסתבר שהחלום של כולם הוא להיות נשיא, מתי נראה אותך רץ?

למען האמת, רציתי להיות נשיא מאז היום הראשון שלי במשחק. שקלתי לרוץ כמה פעמים בחודשים האחרונים, ואני מניח שאני עדיין שוקל את זה כל חודש מחדש. אבל בחודשיים האחרונים, התעייפתי מכל העבודה, אז החלטתי לקחת הפסקה קטנה. זה לא הולך כל-כך טוב – אני מניח שאני מכור – אבל אני לא חושב שאני הולך לרוץ לנשיאות בקרוב. ועם זאת, אם אמצא את עצמי מכוון לנשיאות שוב, אולי ארוץ בעוד כמה חודשים.

אני רוצה לשאול אותך מה היה "רגע הזהב" שלך באירפבליק עד כה?

רגע זהב? אין לי מושג, למען האמת. אני מניח שהרגע המלהיב ביותר היה לילה אחד באוגוסט, כשהיינו בפיגור במרד בסעודיה. נשארתי ב-IRC עם צחי, עידו, רום וריקולס משתים עשרה עד לשתיים בלילה, וניסינו להשיג כל יתרון שיכולנו כדי לנצח. לקחתי באטל הירו וכמעט לקחתי עוד אחד (הוא נלקח בסוף ע"י Doreen Christopple, שפחות או יותר הציל אותנו בסוף הסיבוב), ורום, עידו, צחי ואי-ישראלים אחרים עשו את המיטב שלהם כדי לנצח. ריקולס התחיל לחלק אספקה לאנשים כדי שיילחמו בשבילנו, אבל עדיין לא הצלחנו לנצח... ואז הוא אמר לנו שהוא קרא לכל היוונים ב-Teamspeak, וזהו זה. התחלתי לראות יוונים שופכים דמג' אחד אחרי השני, וניצחנו את הסיבוב הזה בקלות, 83-82. רגע מדהים של אחווה אמיתית.

איך, לדעתך, רואה שאר העולם של אירפבליק את אי-ישראל?

אני לא חושב שמחבבים אותנו במיוחד. הם בטח רואים מדינה מפולגת, אנוכית, וחסרת משמעות. ולמען האמת, זה די מגיע לנו. אני חושב שהדבר הכי חשוב זה להתחיל להילחם חזק למען בעלות הברית שלנו. ריקולס מתנהל היטב בחזית הזאת, בכך שהוא נותן לקרבות של בני הברית שלנו עדיפות גבוהה יותר מאשר בחודשים הקודמים, אבל עדיין יש מקום לשיפור. וחשוב מכל, אנחנו צריכים להבין שמגיעה לנו עזרה מבני הברית שלנו רק אם אנחנו עוזרים להם, אז הגיע הזמן להתחיל ליזום ולהפגין נוכחות למענם, במיוחד כשהם מחוקים לפני בחירות לקונגרס.
