Whats the point?

Day 551, 15:00 Published in Canada Canada by Keldire
In order to continue to maintain political neutrality regarding the coming elections, This newspaper will show no preferences or affiliations to any party or individuals running in this race. The following is not intended to be in support of anything save the democratic process.

I am a firm believer of the rights of citizens and the responsibilities of us, as citizens, to vote. I believe that we all take for granted our gift of a voice and our gift of free will. In real life I am proud to live in BC. However I am very embarrassed by the turnout of voters. This month (May) BC had an election for the premier of our province. The voter turnout was a dismal 50%.

Elections Canada predicted a high voter turnout due to the current recession and the seeming disapproval of British Columbians of the current government. Boy were they wrong!

I was listening to the radio the next day and they were on the streets asking people if they had voted. When they said that they had not voted the reporter asked them "why?". I couldn't believe the answers they gave the reporter. They would say things such as;

"I don't think my vote would make a difference",
"Whats the point?",
and my favorite, "The party I was going to vote for wasn't going to win. So why bother".

if those 50% of voters had shown up to vote the results of the election could have been very different! To those people who thought their party wouldn't win, well those votes could have changed that.

Now I realize that this is just a game and it may not matter to you who wins or who doesn't but the principles are exactly the same. Those of you who enjoy this game and want to improve it, have the opportunity to make the game better by voting.

I understand it can be difficult to get in your car and drive for 5 - 10 mins to cast your vote in real life but this take 3 or 4 extra clicks. You don't have to do anything arduous to vote in eRepublic.

I hear so many people who complain about how the government is run both in real life and in the game and to that I say "did you vote?" and if they respond "no" I say "well then you really have no right to have an opinion". If you give up your voice then you too have no right to criticize the government.

I ask that on the 25th of May, you use your democratic right and vote. Make sure your voice is heard by all and make sure you cast your vote. Do a bit of reading and choose who you think will represent you best in congress.

I ask you all, If we don't stand up for ourselves then who do we expect will? Please Vote!
