What is this congress stuff all about then?

Day 853, 03:13 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by ePocalypse

You may have noticed that every month, a multitude of articles appear and you begin receiving nice messages from people who'd like you to vote for them in the congress elections.

If you're already a member of a political party then it's highly likely that you will choose to vote for a candidate from your own party. This is natural and is a large part of the way that democracy works in the congressional system that we have. You believe that your party is the best to represent you in congress and so by giving your vote to them, you trust that the party will represent your views, or at least your ideals, in congress. My advice to all of you, regardless of which party you support, is to make your views known. If you have good ideas, share and discuss them with other party members or simply participate in discussion within your party forums. That way you are having an input on party policies and having your say on the issues of the day.

Now, what if you're not already in a party? Do you simply choose the first candidate on the ballot in your region? Do you read through all of the manifesto's and vote for the person you think is the best candidate? Do you not even bother to vote?

In an ideal world, all regions would be equally populated and everyone would read all the manifesto's from their region and vote for the best candidate. With the fortress London strategy however, it's not quite so simple, as there's no point in everybody voting for Mr Woldy (awesome as he is)! We need to fill 40 congress seats. How then, do we get the right mix of congressmen that can do a good job and represent our views? Well, you join a party! You have to do this to vote in the congress elections anyway.

Making your vote count. Every party needs votes in London but because of the disproportionate amount of citizens in London compared to everywhere else, they get more than enough there. Your vote counts for much more if you vote for a candidate outside of London. This is why you will likely receive a message from your party asking you to be a mobile voter. It's a simple yet effective way of directing voters to the candidates that need votes. All top 4 parties operate this system out of necessity and while it's not ideal, it is democratic because no-one forces anyone to vote a certain way or to join a certain party. You join the party you feel will represent you best and you vote to help the party gain as many members of congress as possible. That way, when it comes to votes in the House of Commons, your party has as strong of a presence as possible. Clearly it's better to have 20 people voting on your behalf than 10!

Perhaps the easiest place to make an informed decision on which party to join is the political parties wiki.

That's enough talking about the system and certainly enough being impartial. This is the bit where I tell you why you should join TUP and vote for one of our excellent candidates 🙂

The Unity Party is a democratic socialist party. It believes that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone, so as to create for each of us the means to realise our true potential and for all of us a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many not the few; where the rights we enjoy reflect the duties we owe and where we live together freely, in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect.

Taken from The Unity Party constitution.

TUP believe in a nation where opportunities are available for all and we work to ensure that our government and our party support all of our citizens.

This is why we have launched schemes to help those most in need and also encourage people to get involved. You may have seen our unity welcome baskets scheme which gives free food and a weapon to new forum users. We have also been successfully running The Unity Food Programme for 6 months now. This programme offers free high quality food to citizens from levels 5-20 and also to military personnel. This is all thanks to donations and hard work from TUP members and congressmen.

In addition to this, we have achieved many things in government. It’s TUP governments that set up The British Gifting Hub and the MoHA. It was a TUP government that brought in military companies, rather than following the previous, expensive route of buying them off the open market for inflated prices. This also ensured that costs remain relatively stable, rather than dramatically rising at war time when you need them the most.

We strongly believe that a government that looks after the many, rather than the few, is essential for our nation to prosper. Only by our combined strength can our nation be strong. If you believe in these ideals too, why not join The Unity Party today? Get involved and help us. Every member is encouraged to participate in our policy making and discussions. We have a party conference every month and our forums and IRC channel are the most active around.

Of course you could join another party and complain every time TUP do something good. We’d rather you join the herd, get involved and became a key part of TUP future.
