What is a Friend in eRepublik?

I sit here late on this day writing this article after I received several friend requests from people here in eRepublik I have never conversed, PM'ed chatting in IRC or on any forum site. So why was I sent a friend request in the first place? Was my country ranking a target to help a possible Multi-Account get some legitimacy? Was this a private game among some in eRepublik to see who can collect the most friends in a short amount of time? Or was it a simple attempt to collect friends from each nation in eRepublik?

Besides Shouts what are friends really used for? Maybe I am missing something here, but shouts are only a quick way to get a message out. The negative to shouts is that if your other friends post shouts you will never see the shout. The only way to make sure you see them is to have this friend PM you about the shout... And hope you see it in time...

I add friends for important Governmental ORGs, Business ORGs, Investment Opportunities, and yes even those I consider my friends here. I use my list of friends to see if they have a paper or a company or some trivial bit of information that might aid me in my stay here in eRepublik. I hope people who read this post their reasons for friends or why they are good to have here... Besides, what is a friend good for?

I love to see what my friends and closest colleagues are concerned with, that's why I send them friendship requests and follow their shouts.

Also the 'Official' tab is a good reference for some players to get some extra information from their Congress/Senate representatives.

However, I don't see the point of the 'Everyone' tab. It would be better if it was replaced by some kind of 'National' level of shouts.
