Companies were upgraded during 50% sale. 3 grain farms were free, and 1 food company was free.I buy 100 frm, and am usually set for 10 days. I am not sure if this is the most efficient setup, but this is what I use. Currently I make 1600 wellness a day with 60% food bonuses. That is just about how much wellness I use fighting. Investing on your own land will take a lot of money and dedication. However in the long run you will be better off.
Feel free to correct any errors you see or share if you have a better setup.
(The company cost was actually 55 gold, and land costs were not accounted for)

Yeah, self sufficiency is what what we all strive for. It usually requires a lot of initial capital expenditure but ultimately should be well worth it.
Nice set up. Perhaps write a guide for other state troops how to go about getting to where you are!
I'd shoot Stakard a mail too, ask about the loans he gives for RM companies.
Where do you get your weapons from then?
Till you get a supply of them you arn't really self sufficient

You need food to fight, but you don't need weapons. one step at a time
I recommend q4 RM's (cattle, salt peter) and q5 food and weapon as available gold allows only during upgrade "specials". This info in the link is a bit outdated with q6 tanks in the market and you will not be interested in the MU plans I am sure.
