We're Having a Referendum on What Now?

Dressing the Windows: Jacobi Government to Offer Referendum
Please forgive me if I missed something, I am just trying to follow along here, but here are the facts as I understand them.
On May 28th, 34 members of Congress voted on the issue of our military alliance. 13 voted for a new alliance, 11 voted for neutrality, and 10 voted to join PEACE.

This past Friday, in statements released by the Ministry of Communication, PM Jacobi said the following about the status of a “new alliance”:
“There is at this point, and I have no problems saying this, a drawn up draft
agreement. I don't necessarily want to estimate because I think Marchelala would have a better guess....but the composition and rules of the new alliance are around 80% in place. The 20% remaining have to do with composition, tiers of allies, intra-alliance
trade, that sort of thing. I think it is likely that perhaps around the half way point of the administration, we'll see a finalized agreement in Congress”.

Jacobi again repeated this in an interview in The Citizen Times
"There is a drawn up agreement, with niggling differences being ironed out. I’m hopeful to have an announcement before the end of my term".

So you can perhaps excuse my confusion when I saw the Ministry of Communication issue a statement declaring that 160 selected citizens will have the opportunity to participate in a referendum on this issue. Admittedly, this referendum will be non-binding, and will give citizens the opportunity to voice their opinions on the direction of Canada’s military alliance, but many questions remain:
Are we actually involved in the formation of this new alliance or are we still shopping our options?
Is Germany going to be a part of this new alliance, or will they, as many expect, join PEACE?
If Germany is joining PEACE, what are we doing in signing an MPP with them?
How do the other founding member nations involved with this new alliance feel about our MPP with the heavily PEACE influenced Germany?
Why is this opinion poll being labelled a ‘referendum’?
If Congress has already made it clear that there is not majority support for joining PEACE, why is it still being touted as an option?
I believe that an opinion poll such as this is a good way to gauge the feelings of the population, but I just worry that we don’t have all the facts.
As always, The Canadian Independent welcomes your thoughts on this issue.

Signing an MPP with a country that is about to join PEACE and then resurrecting a referendum on Canada possibly joining PEACE? I wonder if our allies have any trust left for Canada at all after what we have seen lately.
I want to know who the people are that voted to join PEACE.
Ever since ATLANTIS fell, I have repeatedly called for a non-imperialist protection alliance between eCanada, eUSA, eUK, eIreland and eGermany. Each of these nations showed majority support, except for the eUSA, which frankly has been alienating everyone lately.
I do not support acts of aggression. PEACE and ATLANTIS both disgust me. In this alliance, any acts of aggression should be punished by expulsion from the alliance. Of course I support signing MPPs with countries outside of the alliance, but the alliance in my opinion should be strictly about protection (a perma-alliance) to defend these nations of they're ever attacked. This new alliance should vehemently oppose military conquests.
@Captain Sam
I can't agree with you on this.
What is the purpose of eRepublik? Is it to prove to ourselves that we can maintain a self-perpetuating online economic simulation or is it be part of a team (eCanada will never be strong enough to go completely alone)that successfully destroys its enemies. Chess, Risk, Axis & Allies, Settlers of Catan (trademarks recognized) or even checkers are not much fun unless there an endgame to play for. I hope eventually the admins develop civil war modules to allow for the potential break-up of eUSA, eCanada, etc. or the recombining of other countries into new ones. Chaos is fun, it creates tension and new situations that allow us to develop our problem solving skills.
In the meantime, I hope our eGov is playing with a long term strategy. Play hard, play fair, but play to win.
"On May 28th, 34 members of Congress voted on the issue of our military alliance. 13 voted for a new alliance, 11 voted for neutrality, and 10 voted to join PEACE."
Perhap it is due to the lack of overwhelming support for either one of the 3 options. 3 votes seperate a new alliance and joining PEACE. To me this is but a spit in the wind. So polling 160 random citizens will hopefully given a far more definate direction that Canada wants to go, followed by a repeat vote could see a drastic change in the results therefor leaving a clear path to follow.
Seems rather logical to me versus moving on 13 votes to one way over 10 vote to another
Captain Sam, I think I found one here

Whatever happens I hope Canada and Germany will work together 🙂.
based off what i have found out today, not many allies are very happy about the way our current government has been going, especially our strongest allies. UK and the US. In only 10 days we have managed to begin the destruction of two relationships.
12 days ago I was approached about conducting a randomized poll of eCanadian citizens regarding the then upcoming Congressional Alliance Poll.
Joe Smith VI, it may seem odd that the debate came and went and is now back again. The odd timing of the referendum had nothing to do with the actions of Congress or the current govt. but rather my own schedule and the difficulty getting access to the eCanada forum citizen usergroups.
It would have been better to have the poll immediately after the poll in Congress, yet delays prevented that from happening. PEACE and other seemingly unnecessary ally choices were included to give as much freedom as choice possible. Narrowing the selection of the poll based on what is "common sense" or what just seems right would render it either biased or skewed.
The confusion about this referendum is quite unwarrented. This is simply a symptom of how congress behaves: some things are done quickly, while some things are done very slowly. Even though Congress already has favored creating a new alliance, this referendum was also drafted at the same time. It took an extra couple weeks to work together a system that would fairly poll citizens, and the result is people screaming and thinking the government is changing their entire course.
This referendum has nothing to do with Jacobi. It is simply a well-designed poll that too long to order (by congress) to design (by the panel), and to physically perform the polling. The results may be somewhat obselete, but it will still be interesting.
"If Germany is joining PEACE, what are we doing in signing an MPP with them?"
Canada is the only Atlantis power that gave Germany it's full support. Regardless of the difficult decisions Germany must make, we will consider Canada to be one of our closest allies.
UK has an alliance with Italy, that has not bothered anyone.

Whatever the Canadian government/people decide, and whatever the German government decides, should not stand in the way of ongoing friendship between our nations. We won't forget Canada's stalwart support of Germany, even when supporting us was politically dangerous.

What a strange coincidence, Elisa
Canada military alliances should be worked to coincide with your biggest friend and ally, The United States.. any diversion that sets you apart from them and you will put Canada in the wrong equation .. just my 2 cents
