7/23/2011: Way of the Tree

Have you ever looked at a tree and wondered why it grew so tall and strong? The real reason is the reason we cannot see. In every tall and steadfast tree, there is a deep and established root system that supports the tree.

The same can be said for new citizens of eRepublik. Every new player starts as a young sapling. There is a temptation for new players to focus on the outward appearance; to show-off, without really developing the necessary economy to support it. I would like to give a few tips to new players on this subject.

1) Save your money and gold to improve your economy

When starting out, avoid the impulse to buy and fight. Buy food only and only to sustain health. Don’t buy weapons, at least not yet. Save your money to buy fruit orchards and gold to buy food factories. Make sure you build orchards first and once you are overproducing it, then build a factory. If you want, I also suggest a one-time purchase of 25 gold to build a food and weapon factory. Exchange the rest of the gold (NIS is really cheap 1g = 500NIS) and build orchards.

Yes, I did research and calculations on which economic building give the best production / cost with health loss and I found that orchards and oil rigs have the best value. That is, assuming there is no limit to how much land you can buy and if the gold exchange rate for NIS is still cheap (500NIS / gold).

Once you can fully supply two or three food factories, shift your focus on to weapons. Build oil rigs and weapon factories. Upgrade your factories to Q2 as soon as you can.

Sell the food your produce and invest that money, too.

2) Avoid fighting

As a new player, you simply don’t do enough damage and you still require 5 Q1 foods for each hit. More importantly, the critical money you have at the beginning is better spent on investing so you can have more later. Don’t throw your money away buying food and weapons to fight.

Instead, focus on strength. Make sure you do your three daily tasks (work, train, reward). Build a climbing center and train there every day. The +2.5 strength for only 0.19 gold is very worth it. You get the most strength per gold by training there.

The details:

Climbing center: +2.5 strength for 0.19 gold = 13.2 strength for every gold
Shooting range: +5 strength for 1.49 gold = 3.4 strength for every gold
Special forces: +10 strength for 1.79 gold = 5.6 strength for every gold

Obviously, train only at the climbing center and later on, once you become rich, build a special forces and train there too. Only at the end of your development should you even consider building a shooting range, that is, unless you are willing to spend RL money.

It’s going to take awhile, be patient. The fastest way to be great is to develop yourself first. Change yourself, change the world.

My Story

Unfortunately, I did not know these concepts. Experience is a hard teacher. I wasted a lot of my gold and money buying supplies and fighting early. I used RL money to help pay and what do I have to show for it? What buildings to I have? Not much. Instead of fighting, I should have spent it building strength. Better yet, instead of building strength, since it comes naturally, I should have spent it on my economy, since it gives me a return.

Learn from my mistakes and may your time in eRepublik be well!

Again, it’s going to take a long time, couple months, but the return will be worth it. At the end of the period, you will be able to fight and sustain yourself.
