Vedic Time Calculation
madhur.t83
Ok so today I came across an article in a leading English Daily regarding the age of Bhagavat Geeta and it got me thinking about an article I had written on India-Forums regarding Vedic Time Calculation and I thought I should share it with you guys. So, I am re-publishing that article here for your reading pleasure.
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────
This is based on an ancient text known as 'Surya Siddhanta'
Hindu Time calculation is based on Lunar Calender, which works on the waxing and waning cycles of the moon.
1 Lunar Month = 15 Bright days (Waxing Phase called Shukla Paksh) + 15 Dark days (Waning Phase called Krishna Paksh) = 30 Days
12 Months = 360 Days = 1 Human Year
1 human year = 1 Divine day (1 day of Gods/Deities)
30 divine days = 1 Divine Month = 30 human years
12 Divine months = 1 Divine Year = 360 Divine days = 360 Human Years
Deities' Lifespan = 100 Divine years = 36,000 human years
The calculation of yugas follows the series of 4 : 3 : 2 : 1
i.e. Satya Yug (4) : Treta Yug (3) : Dwapar Yug (2) : Kali Yug (1)
Kaliyug starts with a Dawn (called Purva Sandhya = 1 Divine Lifespan) + 10 Divine Lifespans and ends with a Twilight (called Uttar Sandhya = 1 Divine Lifespan)
so, Kaliyug = 100 + 1000 + 100 = 1200 Divine years
= 4,32,000 human years = 1 Charana
Going by the above series,
Dwapar Yug = 2 X Kaliyug = 200 + 2000 + 200 = 2400 Divine Years
= 8,64,000 human years = 2 Charanas
Treta Yug = 3 X Kaliyug = 300 + 3000 + 300 = 3600 Divine Years
= 12,96,000 human years = 3 Charanas
Satya Yug = 4 X Kaliyug = 400 + 4000 + 400 = 4800 Divine Years
= 17,28,000 human years = 4 Charanas
1 Mahayug = Satya Yug + Treta Yug + Dwapar Yug + Kaliyug
= 4800 + 3600 + 2400 + 1200 = 12000 Divine Years
= 43,20,000 human years = 10 Charanas
71 Mahayugas = 1 Manvantara (Each Manvantara is ruled by a Manu)
Each manvantara is followed by a Twilight (called Sandhi Kaal) of 4 Charanas
1 Kalpa consists of 14 Manvantaras (each with its own Manu) followed by a Sandhi Kaal and each kalpa starts with a Dawn (called Adi Sandhi) also equal to 4 Charanas
so, 1 Kalpa = 1 Adi Sandhi + 14 Manvantaras + 14 Sandhi Kaal
= 4 Charanas + (14 X 71 Mahayugas) + (14 X 4 Charanas)
= 994 Mahayugas + 60 Charanas
= 994 Mahayugas + 6 Mahayugas
= 1000 Mahayugas = 4,32,00,00,000 human years
2 Kalpa = 1 Brahma Day = 8,64,00,00,000 human years
30 Brahma Days = 1 Brahma Month
12 Brahma Months = 360 Brahma Days = 1 Brahma Year
= 31,10,40,00,00,000 human years (3.1104 trillion human years)
Brahma Lifespan = 100 Brahma Years
1000 Brahma Lifespans = 24 Minutes in 1 Vishnu Day
360 Vishnu Days = 1 Vishnu Year
Vishnu Lifespan = 100 Vishnu Years
1000 Vishnu Lifespans = 24 Seconds of 1 Shiva Day
360 Shiva Days = 1 Shiva Year
Shiva has no lifespan, he is neither born nor die i.e. he is beyond life and death, he is eternal

Current Date: Year 2014
As of today, 50 years of Brahma have elapsed and we are in the First Day of the 51st year. Within this Day, 6 Manvantaras have elapsed and we are in the 7th Manvantara.
Within this Manavantara, 27 Mahayugas, and the Satya, Treta and Dwapar Yugas of the 28th Mahayuga have elapsed. We are in the Kaliyuga of the 28th Mahayuga.
The time elapsed since the current Brahma:
1 Brahma Year = 3.1104 Trillion Human Years
50 Brahma Years = 3.1104 X 50 = 155.52 Trillion Human Years
In the First Kalpa of 1st day of 51st Brahma Year:
1 Adi sandhi + 6 Manvantaras + 6 Sandhi Kaal
= 4 Charanas + (6 X 71 x 10 Charanas) + (6 X 4 Charanas)
= 17,28,000 + (6 X 71 X 43,20,000) + 6 x 17,28,000 = 1.852416 Billion Human Years
In the 7th Manvantara:
27 Mahayugas = 27 x 43,20,000 = 116.64 Million Human Years
In 28th Mahayug:
Satya Yug + Treta Yug + Dwapar Yug = 17,28,000 + 12,96,000 + 8,64,000 = 3.888 Million Human Years
The current Kaliyug began at Midnight of 17 Feb - 18 Feb, 3102 BC
So, In current Kaliyug:
3102 + 2014 = 5116 human years
So the total time elapsed since current Brahma is
155.52 Trillion + 1.852416 Billion + 116.64 Million + 3.888 Million + 5116
= 15,55,21,97,29,49,116 Years have passed since the dawn of time

" Shiva has no lifespan, he is neither born nor die i.e. he is beyond life and death, he is eternal"
Do this mean he is the only Deva that attained Moksa ? Tell me more about this situation of Shiva, please.
Firstly, Gods and Deities (or Deva) don't attain Moksa, it's only attainable by humans because Moksa by definition means merger of an 'Atma' (or a human's soul) into the 'Paramatma' (or God).
Secondly, my reason for the above quoted sentence is that Shiva is considered beyond the constraints of time as he is known as 'Mahakaal' which means the Controller of Time and Death, he is also called 'Anaadi' and 'Anant' meaning 'Without Beginning' and 'Without End' respectively i.e neither he's born nor he dies.
Regarding First one. This was the reason why I asked about the eventuality of a special situation of Shiva, knowing he is also the Maha Yogi. (just on the side, Paramatma is not the western concept of God).
Regarding mastering of time: ”parinimah traya samyama atita anagata jnana” i believe it is achievable by all human
Thanks for this exchange of ideas and I look forward for more talks like that, if you dont mind.
There are many contradictions in these Theories. Siva, Vishnu, Bhramha are considered as Trinity, each has his own role but they all are different faces of same power.
So, here we must not see birth or death as same as what humans are subjected to. It's just shifting form, some stories / sastras say the trinity change form with in themself, so shiva now is vishnu someother time like so on. Just like water changing form, I am no expert I just read it somewhere.
Obliviously as I said at start, there are many contradictions, in Vishnava dharma, Vishnu is supreme, in Saiva, Siva is.
Interesting to quote, trinity has no spl hierarchy nor any personality attributed in Vedas, it is Puranas which gave them special character n all. Plus, Rig veda has no mention to *Trinity* of Gods.
As far as Siva is concerned, I happened to find this one which might solve the contradiction a bit...

Thanks for the link. I noticed this:
”In the yogic culture, Shiva is not seen as a God. He was a being who walked this land and lived in the Himalayan region. As the very source of the yogic traditions, his contribution in the making of human consciousness is too phenomenal to be ignored. ”
And I agree. Because it was very long time ago (this time when Siva walked the land) we forgot about it. So I believe.
Regarding other Deva (or Asura), I perceive them as souls (not in the Atman sense, but as Purusha), just more conscient about them existence, more near to the ... other realm, the one humans forget. The realm of Purusha.
@murthu
Universe ages are deducted by today science on base of red wawes (indulge my english) which could be true (or not),
Also, our life is not compulsory to be lived on earth. It is a big universe.
We could chose other planets in our next life.
Timeless . my head is spinning. Nice info though.
Oh its so interesting I will keep this in my hard disk. Very precious info. Thanks for sharing
Could you calculate how many years are left in current kalyug
That's simple maths,
Kaliyug = 4,32,000 years
Years elapsed in current Kaliyug = 5116 years
so, years remaining = 4,32,000 - 5116 = 4,26,884 years left in current Kaliyug
Meh 🙁 It will end so soon ?? 🙁
(So Sad) 🙁
xD
mindfuck and fake 😃
Most of the above calculations have been validated.
Dude. The Universe is only 13 billion years old.
Which is ACTUALLY a lot but nothing comparable to those above listed timelines.
Also, it would die much earlier from 'heat death' than survive all those years.
And also, our genetic markers indicate that our species (homo sapiens) is VERY young (w.r.t. to the planet), only 50000 years. 😛
Science rocks, isn't it? 😉
According to the Scriptures, Its not the first time life has evolved and ended, it has happened many times.. and so has the universe.. The Great Flood and the Dasavatara had all happened many times b4 too.. and it will continue to do it too. .. And Every Single time, Dasavatara (which is the best Example for Evolution of Life) has happened, Think of it, Matsya (fish, aquatic, insignificant in "nature" but the starter of life just like the first aquatic Microbes) --> Kurma (Turtle, Slowly developing, also capable to live on land, like the Amphibian like species that evolved later) -- > Varaha ( Fully Capable Land Species, Like the next species in the scientific scale) --> Narasimha (Half Human, Half Animals, Time when more superiorly advanced organisms develop, maybe even the first signs of the Great "Homosapien" Species coming about) --> Vaman (Small, but human, like the start of Human race) -- > Ram ( Perfect Human, Maryadha Purushotham , when Homosapiens truly cme around, a specie who gives prio to Trust, Word and Values. The true example of a perfect life form. Ram was it all, maybe the true way a human is to be, But soon thinks changed) --> Balram and Krishna (More Advanced Humans, but not the "Man of Value and Word" type like Ram, for Eg, Krishna's words say "The way doesnt matter, only the aim has to be good ". But Ram was always sure that "Whatever be the goodness or badness of the Aim, The way I walk to it will be always the path of Right, the Path of Good and truth" .. So now homosapiens have started to not care of values in their path, but only to attain their final aims.. be it be in any way.. and Man starts to use more advanced material and also have the guts to live life his own way*not giving in to any values* ) ---> Kalki (final Destroyer, man himself , when at his worse, kills his own world and his own race, final form, of Greed, Cruelty and the absolute loss of values)
And After Kalki destroys the world, it restarts, Matsya again, so Life go on
tldr
does this have any connection with time dilation?
ok
