June 6, 1944. Canadian troops, along side their allies stormed the beaches of Normandy to begin the liberation of Europe.

Much fanfare is made of the British and American contingent in this invasion, however in true Canadian fashion, few are aware about the perils which faced the Canadian troops.

Juno Beach - the 3rd Canadian Division was disputedly the most arduous of landing points in Operation Overlord. Situated between Sword Beach and Gold Beach - two of the British beaches,
Juno was also the second most heavily fortified beach in the invasion.

The Canadians were met by two armoured divisions - the I SS Panzer Corps, Divisions 12th, and 21st. During this time, the corps was granted the honorary title "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler".

Surely that must have stung.

After being pushed back by Canadian troops, the 21st went on the participate in the 'Battle of the Bulge' (no, not Richard Simmons at an Elton John concert). As the Canadians pushed forward - faster and farther than any other army group - they met yet more armoured resistance in the form of the 101st SS Heavy Panzer Battalion in the battle for Caen, a strategic objective for Allied forces as it was in close proximity to a key German Aerodrome which had to be taken to ensure air superiority for the duration of the invasion.

By the end of D-Day the 3rd Canadian Division had penetrated farther into France than any other Allied force, advancing roughly 10 km at the cost of almost 1,000 casualties, including 335 killed.

The Germans remembered the Canadians it seemed. The nightmares of all of those Saskatchewan farmboys coming up out of the ground at Vimy Ridge in The Great War were returning.

The Germans fought hard. It is not officially known how many Axis troops were killed that day. The Allied troops were told that the defenders were comprised primarily of old men and boys on bicycles.

That was proved to be false. Yet, Canada and the Allies prevailed over the confident, seasoned German forces.

Fast forward 65 years...and off on a reality based tangent.

eCanada today remains. eGermany lies in smoldering ruins. The eSwedes and ePoles have ransacked eGermany and have forced a flood of refugees to enter eCanadian lands.

One thought jumps immediately to min😛 D-Day 2009.

eCanadian troops. eGerman troops. Fighting side by side, in arms for the liberation of eGermany.

Will it be so? The sun is already setting in the east, and no invasion has taken place. Too soon perhaps... However, with the help of our new eGerman citizens, many of whom are seasoned veterans of battle, we can look forward to the day when we together storm the beaches and liberate a foreign - and not so foreign land.

It is my opinion that a new division should be created within the CAF to accomodate our newest eCanadians - the eGerman Corps.

Valhalla will have to wait a little longer for these heros...

With honour,

Tyler F. Durden

Update 1: 'Operation Tiger', which preceded 'Operation Overlord' by 39 days as a training excercise where on British beaches, Allied troops practiced invading 'Fortress Europe'. The German High Command discovered the planned excercise and sent a force to annhililate the Allies - fully unaware what Tiger was a preperation for.

Four times as many men were lost in 'Operation Tiger' than those on 'Utah Beach'.

Update 2: A new, effective version of 'Operation Wehrwolf' should begin immediately.

Update 3: An animated Lego re-enactment of Utah Beach. Very well done.

Update 4: Of course, no D-Day anniversary would be complete without some Saving Private Ryan
