Dateline: Wednesday June 1, 2011 (Day 1289)
Location: Port Hueneme, Ventura CA
Reporter: Major George Armstrong "Old Man" Custer

Port Hueneme, along with Point Mugu Naval Air Station and San Nicolas Island, comprise Naval Base Ventura County, and are the home of the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion, or Seabees.

On March 27, 166 members of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 40 returned home, after serving over eight months in Afghanistan.
The Seabees left Afghanistan and headed to Germany, then flew straight to Minneapolis and on to Point Mugu.
In Afghanistan, the unit's primary role was constructing forward-operating bases and preparing transportation routes to and from the bases.
"It was an absolutely successful mission," said Tim DeWitt, the battalion's commanding officer. "We were in four different areas in the country and there was a lot of hard work, a lot of it dangerous, but we all made it back."

Construction workers in World War II in the Pacific are needed to build military sites, but the work is dangerous and they doubt the ability of the Navy to protect them. After a series of attacks by the Japanese, something new is tried, Construction Battalions (CBs=Seabees). The new CBs have to both build and be ready to fight.
