UK wage/food prices - an analysis
To start off let me apologise now for any spelling, grammar and general poor structure
in this article. I would also apologise if I suggest that the current administration
has been doing something wrong. I do not mean to imply this and as I have been away I
do not know what difficulty's that have faced.
I write this article as an investigation into the economy from a socialist stand point.
Put simply I'm going to investigate whether wages are fair and whether inequality is
forming in eUK. As I have not found out the answers to my questions yet this may become
messy very quickly and may even turn out to be useless.....
Food prices
03/01/2009 at around 1😇
0 the cheapest food prices in the UK are as follows. The prices
listed also have good stock levels so I can assume they will be like this for most if not
all of the day.
Q1 - 0.79
Q2 - 1.47
Q3 - 3.2
Q4 - 6.4
Q5 - 25.6 (most that need Q5 purchase it trough traders so I doubt this price is accurate.)
Wellness calculations
erep wiki - http://wiki.erepublik.com/index.php/Wellness
Helpful calculator - http://www.cccp-group.org/index.php?page=erep_wellnesscalc
So as one equation for all those who don't want to read.
Wellness change = (1.5 - current wellness/100) * (Qhouse + Qfood) - (Qwork(+ 1 if trained))
But that equation has so many variables... How are we to find what wage a citizen needs when
we don't know lots about that citizen. Well I'm going to start by looking for a minimum.
From the governments point of view they want every citizen to be at around 45% wellness or
Above. Any less and they can't fight as well as working/ training. I am going to use 50%
wellness though for easier calculations.
The government is trying to house people and there are many schemes which are helping but I
don't think we can assume our worst case has a house so we will remove that.
The government would also hope that every citizen trains as with the amount of wars going on
atm we need all the troops we can get. So we will assume every citizen trains daily.
So far we have
Wellness change = Q food - (Qwork + 1)
so this means a worker needs to be buying food one bracket above there job. To stay at the
50% minimum.
Wages?
My calculations will have to split here as there are many industries and skills which determine
What wage a citizen will receive.
I will start with raw materials.
Companies are offering jobs to skill 0 so its an industry many new workers will be in.

there were two companies in each of the skill 0 bands so unemployment is not an issue. It
did however shock me that the quality 2 company only offered 0.08 GBP more.
So lets start with citizen A who will work for 1.08 GBP.
Wellness change = Q food - (Qwork + 1)
citizen A's wage = 1.08 - 10%(tax) = 0.98
Citizen A can only afford Q1 food and if they spend all income on food they could afford one
Q2 food every 3.58 days. If A bought just Q1 food the next 5 days would be as follows

By day 3 the citizen will be skill 1 before working but due to the 72 hour work rule they
cannot change company until day 4.This would normally be an annoyance but our skill one
offers are worse then the skill 0 one that A currently works at so he/she continues there

By day 7 A is skill 2 and is able to earn 2GBP a day in a Q1 company but by then its too
Late. With the citizen bellow 40 wellness even if they still felt like playing after not
Earning anything they still would not be able to fight.
So citizen A leaves the game but was there a better approach?
Citizen B chooses only Q1 companies even at the cost of 0.08GBP.

Citizen B is now skill 2 and able to get a new job for 2GBP. He/she has lost about half the
wellness A did but I still think its a shame to loose any. With B now earning 1.8 after tax
B can now buy Q2 food with a little more spare cash then they bought Q1.

After another 10 days B is now skill 3 and earning 3.2GBP (2.9 after tax) at a Q1 company
Finally B is free from having to spend every pay check on food and although it will be a
while before B can get say a house the gold bonus's from working and levels will look
close enough to keep B playing the game.
I planned to do this again for manufacturing and construction but feel the article will
drag on more then it already has. I may do them in another article if this is well received.
So what this shows....
We do have a problem. In both cases it has taken workers over 16 days to be on a positive
wellness increase each day. In case A I would of been very suppressed if the citizen didn't
Just leave erepublik and join another game which gave them more short term success.
in case B even after reaching day 16 B is on lower wellness then when they started and
barely at fighting strength.
There are government schemes out there and other charity helping but with war
costing everyone are they really doing there job? This is not a question I can answer but
Without that extra help the numbers above don't bode well for our new players.
With elections coming up I think we should be looking to reinforce our support for the eUK
Citizen. We should start a time of peace until we have sorted out our economy.
The most important thing I find is education is needed. The difference between A and B was
the realization that the extra pay wasn't enough to warrant working in a Q2 company. Is this
the GM's fault? I don't know but we need to be educating the people to look at what job they
Take instead of going for the highest figure. If the GM's need help to pay better wages then
This must also be looked into.
Our treasury is low but it will be lower still if no one has any money to spend so lowering
Tax may be an idea too.
Comments
you forgot that you get 5GBP citizen fee.
new players shouldn't join Q2 companies.
So you have 10 days before running out of monies to by Q2 food, by which you will have a better paying job.
It is true the citizen fee does allow you to do this but that means spending you savings. Most new players may spend that money on weapons or gifts not really knowing what they did which again highlights the point of education.
If the calculations weren't so vast I would redo this using the fee and aiming for higher wellness. 50% is not a good amount and means the new workers are not productive enough which is one of the main reasons wages are so low to start.
Definitely true. I only joined a month ago, and wasted money on gifts, and applying for jobs above my skill. Education for new players is definitely an issue that needs to be addressed if we want citizens to be constructive members of society as opposed to floundering to keep their heads above water!
If they join in norway they get a gr8 chance. You get a start off with 30 NOK. You can buy q1 food for 1.88 NOK, and you can get a job in the oil industry for 5 NOK(q1!) so you can make profit of 3.12NOK per day. Its easy to be rich some places, and very hard in others!
(gold = 38.7NOK!)
@ostaiin, thanks for the suggestion and welcome to eRepublik.
To the rest of the UK, would it be beneficial to follow something like this?
@ ostaiin
the uk doesn't have oil, or diamonds, or wood. So there are no companies here offering insane wages so that they can export to other countries
