To Strive, to Seek, to Find, and Not to Yield.....

An American Vision

Tho' much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
I've had a lot of time to think these past two months. For once in my tenure in this game I have gotten to look at the game as almost an outsider in government. I've probably had a lot of time to learn, which I have always felt is a key aspect of being an active and productive citizen in this country and in the game as a whole. It's not that I didn't want to dedicate myself to my eRep studies, its just that more often than not I was busy doing a myriad of different things. With this new found time, I have also gotten to reflect. I didn't reflect on myself, but on the game itself. With this knowledge and introspection, I think I have learned a great deal about the eUSA and where we have been and where we are going.
I have read a lot of interesting theories on what is wrong with America today and how we can improve the nation. A lot of people thought iron would improve our economy and spur us into being an economic and military super power. They were wrong. Some people say we need hospitals in every state and although I admire their agenda, it won't make America great. Other say that using API technology will usher in a new age and make us strong and organized, that might be true, but it won't make us great and just like hospitals, it won't keep people interested. This game is about more than just technology and in-game conveniences, ultimately its about people. Ordinary citizens that log in every day and do their duty and ask nothing in return are the motor that drive this country, whether they are a marine or just the ordinary two clicker. So the question is: What do the people want? I have an idea. We need inspiration and an American vision. We need a vision that clearly defines our future and gives us something to aspire to.
I looked at my first shout the other night. It sai
😛"Please God let me hit level 5 before the war ends!!!!" That was during French Toast. I was a newb just like a lot of people reading this article. I wanted to fight so bad I could taste it. I desperately wanted to do more than train and work. Eventually, I hit level 5 and proceeded to fight like hell even up till today. It gave me a purpose and I enjoyed it. We lost French Toast, and then we lost Taco Bell, we lost FER, and then to add insult to injury we nearly lost the whole damn country. Despite the losses we stayed active and kept fighting though. We wanted to win more than anything. It fueled us and motivated us to do better. Our national goals were simple back then. Our purpose was to win and to drive back our enemies. We were the Rocky Balboa of eRepublik. We kept getting the snot kicked out of us, but we kept moving forward, taking five punches to deliver just one. We kept doing it and eventually we broke through and won.
Today, I look at the nation and I can honestly say, I am less than enthused with our direction. We've lost our ambition America!!. Our citizens are dying due to inactivity. Our economy is suddenly less than up to snuff. It appears to these eyes that we have no clear national agenda in terms of diplomacy or military policy. We have become a rudderless ship and if we continue on this course, we like all rudderless ships will crash upon the rocks and sink. Now, I am not looking for knee jerk national policy, what I am looking for is a pulse. We need to get active on the world stage in a variety of ways and by doing that get our citizens back in the game. If we don't do that folks we are going to find ourselves in a whole lot of trouble real soon.
So, what do we need to do as a nation? We need to set ambitious national goals (no not those goals). We need to have a plan that we begin to set in motion and we need to constantly strive to attain that goal regardless of who is President. Challenges are the only thing that will spur activity and increase our population. John F. Kennedy wanted to put a man on the moon in a decade and he set that as part of his national agenda. He never got to see the USA accomplish that, but we did it in within the decade as he predicted. We need to take the same attitude in this game. As a nation we need to demand a long term vision for this country and we need to start working towards it. We might not succeed all the time when working towards that goal, but we will continue working towards it. There will be stumbling blocks along the way and it won't always be easy, but I know if we aim high we can achieve whatever we put our minds too. This game isn't about hospitals, or iron, or technology. This game is about people, vision, inspiration, and having an iron will that will not bend despite the obstacles and dangers we face. America we can do better and quite honestly if we all work together things will get better.

Challenge is the key term here. Challenge is the drive.

Epic.
Excellent article.
Piginzen for president!
great as always.
truer words have never been spoken. the way i see it we as people need a enemy, be it the economy, terrorist, or even drugs. we have to have something as a nation to fight against. now obviously I am referring to the real America but we as epeople nee the same things; a common enemy. other wise we get bored we need a goal something to live for something to keep us coming back every day.
F***ing A!!! Lead us to glory!
Come on WahooBob.. troll other articles with your PiZ voting bs... jesus, its two weeks away man.
Great write Josh.. USA is boring as hell right now and everyone knows it. After the excitement of the invasion and repelling it people are used to constant action, not Training Wars and lulz battles.
cool article
Are you running?
Great article and I could not agree more.
I still have a bone to pick with Portugal...I say let's go get our 500 gold back. ;P
But yeah, eRepublik is REALLY boring right now. I got two friends to join by getting them hyped about the war...and then it just stops. Fortunately, they found economics to be enjoyable, so they stuck...but lets face it...the game sucks for most folk w/o the fighting.
Honestly, I think Lvl 5 is too long to wait for fighting. If admin dropped the requirement to Lvl 3 or 4, I think player retention worldwide would seriously increase.
Nicely written.
I think what Josh writes is true, but unfortunately I don't see things changing for the better.
The good people that put in the time, effort, and were good in their positions are now gone. Chased off by DDoS, ignorance, the law, and frustration.
America is a diseased nation. As soon as you cure one ailment another pops up. It's a never-ending cycle.
The ship is rudderless, and all the passengers do is argue about is how much sail to unfurl, meanwhile the ship is headed for the rocks. Do what's smart - save yourself and abandon ship.
That's a good point Thalia. Really, why the wait admins?
Nice article. You say we need an agenda but not what it should be. Though you do imply it should be war oriented.
If we publicly affirm an agenda, then we also show our cards to the opponents of said agenda.
Everything is a big mess. Enjoy!
i just vote, i don't need to read to understand the epicness of this paper
re: my 1st cmnt: I keep forgetting that you can fight on your first day if you PAY to open everything.
Good stuff
Rocky!
I love what you guys did for us in Operation Turkish Delight. 🙂
Did we stop with the food references after that one?
Great rah rah, but this much is pretty obvious.
What's your idea for a national goal?
Attacking Singapore?
Wow! Good article! If PigInZen offers to let you on the ticket, you should take it.
And what do you propose?
Mr Frost, please repeal the PANEC tax scheme... It does not work in a time of relative peace...
And if you are serious about these things, then please, help lead us into battles! Run for President!
Good observations.
I've always thought the game was a little too war oriented. It makes the game a little one dimensional and though it gives people something to do, after awhile the fighting all seems just a little pointless. When you think of the big picture, war becomes an end to itself, not a means to an end. But most importantly, the ordinary citizen is unable to participate in the end, but only in the means.
oofa--that's a little dense
But in rl we fight wars to make our domestic life better or the domestic lives of others better. In erep we have to fight wars to keep our health up. There should be better ways to do that. There should also be more activities for newbies to participate in to keep their interest in the game and learn about the eworld.
my 2 cents

great article, i hope to see it achieved
Yes, we need something clear and tangible to focus on and work toward.
When America was focused on the PEACE invasion we got organized, we got united, and we were eventually able to start getting stuff done. Without that clear focus people either get bored and leave or they bring up the old Hospital stuff.
Agree with you, JF 😃

Beautiful.
I got to say, I'm puzzled by all this talk about "what's wrong with eAmerica". I think we're pretty damn great. The military is better than ever. Our population is growing. I remember when we were 14K with all regions. Less even. Yeh, it's not a 40,000+ baby boom like our Polish allies have seen. But face it, Erepublik is not as popular in the USA as it is in Europe. And it won't be without some major media coverage and work on the part of US players to get the word out. But until then, we're still pretty damn great. Sure, we need some massive war, we're in a lull, but that's the cycle. You pull the hammer up for a moment before bringing it down again.
Everyone quit wringing your hands. Recruit players. The game is what you make it, so make it what you want. Drink some coffee. Bored people are boring.
nice job. voted.
God bless America!
I agree - 1 national goal (a hard to obtain goal) would keep eUS at course. Things need to happen or soon we will have phoneyX kidz waltzing through our backyards again.
We are loosing our edge... and fast
Well written but I'd like to add something...
You speak the truth when you say we need a goal, but it's not just setting a goal, it also needs enthusiasm, from everyone in this country. Some time ago we had Hello Kitty in mind and we went for it but we didn't keep going. We had UK in mind but as much as I know we haven't done anything about it yet.
Just look at our military national goal; And it's been more than 15 days of presidential election.
Having a goal IS necessary but reaching it requires courage and enthusiasm too.

Success or even fun is not defined by national unity, common shared goals, or victory in war. In fact, no one really has the right to define success for anyone else in this game. Not the admins. Certainly not the political leaders or opinion leaders, what C. Wright Mills called the "power elite". The function of the power elite is the one element of political science affirmed in this game.
Fantasizing about having a purpose is not the same thing as actually having a purpose, in real life as well as virtual life. I sat through half a talk on game theory yesterday at lunch today, and the speaker spoke about how Jeopardy players do not always pursue optimal bidding strategies, but rather resort to arbitrary rule-based decisions. But then the discussion turned to how we choose goals themselves, how the values of the game frame political debate itself.
So, for those who are theoretically minded, who might interest themselves not just in having fun, but understanding what is going on, there you have it. The "game" if you will, is about choosing what game to play. Be Josh Frost the Joseph Knecht, the "master of the game" ? An odd thought to be having, Mr. Seabury !!
