A magányos katona megkapta a parancsokat. Egy kis cetli csupán, rajta szigorú szavak, egy távoli hely és egy idegen név - és a jegyek mellé. A katona megpróbálja kimondani a nevet, de nem megy, a nyelv beletörik az ismeretlen hangokba, melyek oly mások a megszokottaktól... Mindegy, gondolja magában, oda kell mennem, akárhol is van ez; rá kell szavaznom, bárki is ez; segítenem kell, mert ez a dolgom most.

Elmegy hát, és szavaz rá, a katona dolga sosem az, hogy miérteket kérdezzen, megmondják neki hova menjen, mit tegyen - és néha mind katonák vagyunk a sors hideg kezében, az idő és a hely ahol élünk meghatároz minket, a tetteinket; és ha mondhatjuk is azt, hogy nem, ha lehetünk is dacosak, makacsak, a következményeket is viselnünk kell. A szövetségesek azok szövetségesek, az ellenség az ellenség - nem számít itt a barátság, egy harcmező ez is most. De néha a vonalak elmosodnak azért...

Néha a katona elgondolkozik az idegen hangzású neveken, az ismerősebbeken, és azon, hogy ki melyik oldalon is van, lehet. Ez az kor a kémek kora és a titkos terveké; ez a kor a titkoké és a megtévesztéseké; ez a kor a csavaros agyaké amelyek egymással mérik össze tudásukat. Munkájukat nem honorálják medálokkal, nincs a TO Mestere érem, nem mérik dicsőséggel az éjszakai munkát, az egész napos szervezést, a kémeket, a kevésbé látványos posztokat...

Be kellene ezt fejezni, gondolja a katona, igen, értem, izgalmas, és ez is egyfajta csatamező, egy verseny, amiben valóban bárki részt vehet - de mindenki érzi, hogy van benne valami belső, érezhető rossz, valami perverzitás, valami nem oké... és noha a katona oda megy, ahova a parancsa szól, elhallgattatja a lelkiismeretét, elmondja magának megint az ésszerű érveket, a racionális megfontolásokat, majd végül, amikor az még mindig sikoltozik, ráparancsol, csend legyen! - mert ha menni kell, ha tenni kell, hát menni kell s tenni kell.

Nem dolguk a gondolkozás, csak menni kell és meghalni...

The lone soldier got the marching orders. A small piece of paper, on it laconic words, a far-away place, a strange name and some tickets beside. The soldier tries to say the name, but the tongue just cannot pronounce it, it is so far from the well-known sounds that he has no idea how to say it. No matter, he thinks, I must go there, wherever it is, I must vote there, whatever the reason for it, and I must help him, no matter what happens.

He goes there and votes, a soldier never asks for whys, he is told where to go, what to do, and sometimes we are all soldiers in fate's cold hands, the time and place in which we live in define us, our actions and although we can say no, we can act defiantly, but we must bear the consequences of that decision too. Allies are allies, no matter what. Enemies are enemies, no matter the friendship if not on the battlefield. But sometimes the lines are not clear cut.

Sometimes the soldier thinks of the strange names, and the familiar ones and wonders which side he is on. This is an era of spies and hidden plans, the era of secrecy and discovery, an era of crafty minds measuring their capabilities against each other. Their work is not measured in medals, there is no Master of TO-s, there is no valor attached to the night-long work, the organization, the spies, the hidden jobs...

Should be stopped he thinks, it is excitement, it is a kind of a battle, it is a race that any can take part in - but there is something inherently wrong, perverted in it, that much everyone can feel... and the soldier goes where he is ordered, he calms his conscience, he tells it all the sensible reasons and explanations, and finally he tells it to shut up, for one must do what one must do.

Theirs not to reason why, theirs is but to do and die...
