Day 720, 12:45 Published in Finland Latvia by Visvaldis Bargais
Turnip Information Exchange Programme

Let's just start with a little introduction. I, Visvaldis Bargais, was fully prepared to retire for a night of well deserved sleepiness and decided to browse the latest articles for just one final time. While doing this I noticed several articles posted by Finn authors concerning politics in eFinland and several other topics which were regrettably in Finnish language. This is however ok as I am sure the articles contained valuable information about the Finn nation and the use of the Finn language only showed the author's pride for their national heritage.

Let's start with a little background information.

I myself lived in Romania at the time and was fed a lot of Romanian propaganda about how Romania was the ultimate good. I must admit that I found their claims quite feasible at the time due to my inexperience and ignorance of the story of the other side. This is clearly illustrated by my blindness torwards the fact that Romania had unjustly occupied a part of Hungary. They're articles were capable of convincing me that Hungary was the bad guy. All this changed when Latvia was introduced into the game, there were few Latvians playing at that time and we came with great enthusiasm with the desire to make it a prosperous country.

I met a lot of wonderful people who I am proud to call my friends and with whom I was glad to help in the development of the country. We may have actually done pretty well if not for a large group of Canadian players who had decided to colonise this new country, rightly did the Latvian players protest against somthing like this, but in truth the Canadian players were not the largest threat to the development of the country. Unknown bands of organised TOers arrived just before the election seen by some as citizens of Indonesia. This did nothing but stregthen my opinion that PEACE was the enemy.

As you can imagine the TOers took by superiour numbers the gold that was rightfuly Latvia's. Fortunately we were able to win the presidental election and secure a part of the national currency. It was a hard time for the country, but never had I seen a group of people so united in their effort to build up a country from next to nothing. People donated all their gold to the national bank and not only that, but the donations of 5 gold from the medals of the congress elections were seen by Latvians as nothing special and the obviously right thing to do.

Things were beginning to look better as the country began to save up a small amount of gold and was already planning on building it's hospital, when Finland decided to attack Latvia. I did not write this article to blame anyone contrary to what your first thought may be. I merely describe the situation as Latvians felt shocked and astounded at the very thought that Finalnd could attack us. Afterall I could recall heartfelt welcome articles from the Finns at the first days the Baltic countries were introduced.

Needless to say this had a very deep effect on me, as I up to this moment had believed that the ATLANTIS countries are defenders of the weak and the knight that forever battles the evil PEACE. Needless to say that the pure absurdness of the situation proved my quite wrong. Latvia had up to this moment been a neutral country so I could find no way to justify this attack. Actually it was only possible, because Latvia was a neutral country. It would have also most likely remained that way if not this act of unprovoked aggression from Finland. I blame myself for it to a large extent. I blame myself for my blindness and unwillingness to accept that somthing like this was possible. It may have been evaded if Latvia would have already had a fully functional Foreign Affairs Ministry as it has now. There was simply not enough dialogue between the two countries to ensure stability in the region.

The baby boom - a resault of the war is of course an excellent thing and somthing that the Latvian nation may have to feel slightly in debt torwards our northern neghbours even though their motives could have hardly been the increasing of the Latvian population. Actually in my opinion the official opinion of Finland at the time was that Latvian land was under-used, and rightly so, but this hardly justified the attack in Latvian eyes as is only natural. Not only this but the Finns mocked the Latvians fighting for the defence of their country though clearly outnumbered forced to hire mercenaries for the money saved up during the whole time of unselfish donations Latvians were unable to hold on to their countries main region against let's face it the might of all the ATLANTIS volunteers including the tableclothed Croats whom I later grew to despise. I feel that I begin to accuse, but I can not avoid it. It simply is a period in history that can not be skipped though ugly it may seem. I am more than certain that ATLANTIS had a version of their own. I learnt this from my experience in Romania. But now was the time that I learned what Hungary felt like under the occupation of Romanians it took this to open my eyes.

One thing was certain - Latvia could no longer remain neutral.

I hope that atleast some of you will have enjoyed my article, I would like to go on, but regrettably I am far too tired at this moment. I do not urge you to subscribe as I can not promise you quality newspapers in Eglish several times a week, but please feel free to vote. I hope that alteast some of you will not be too harsh in your judgement as I realise you must have your own opinion that differs of that which is mine. We have fought our wars, but it does not have to mean that we must always be enemies, The decisions of war are made by few, let us not condemn the new generations of players to ever lasting hate between Finland and Latvia. I have a dream that one day the aliances of EDEN and PEACE shall dissolve and countries will no longer be strictly divided into two armed camps.
So much for the background information as already mentioned I must end my article short, but fear not I shall return.

Yours truly
