This Week on Capitol Hill

Day 1,083, 20:10 Published in USA USA by Dave Richards
rainy sunday Elected Speaker; Arm America on Path to Return; Pizza Banned Forever

After an odd series of parliamentary procedures, rainy sunday was named Speaker of the House for the 35th Congress last Sunday. The former S.E.E.S. president named Haliman, whom she defeated without reaching quorum, her Deputy Speaker, along with SGGHays. As well, she named Glove and Athanaric the new Congressional Whips. rainy sunday replaces Claire Littleton, the former 2-time then-Libertarian Party president who chose not to run for a second term as Speaker. Haliman has been filling in this week for rainy.

One of the quickest proposals was to reestablish committees. A bill written by S3RO proposed the formation of three committees, with every Congressman serving on one committee. Many months ago, committees were a Congressional tradition; but they were eliminated on the grounds that they were just a waste of time with no good being derived from them. After much discussion, the proposal moved to a vote on Wednesday, at which time it was voted down, 12-17.

Another bill considered this week was an audit by the Comptroller General of all government-owned organizations, which passed 23-3.

A notable proposal passed earlier today was made by former vice-president ligtreb, who motioned to ban any Congressman who grants Pizza The Hut American citizenship from the Congressional forum boards. The proposal, as expected, was passed unanimously.

Currently in the discussion stage is a bill written by Jacksondr5, to name November 5 “a national holiday in remembrance of all the eRepublik administration's EPIC screw ups.” There is some debate over whether November 5 is the best date for the holiday; the bill sponsor suggested it because it is the date upon which the military skill migrations were made. There is also some adversity towards overriding GF Day (June 30), in honor of the greatest ragequit in eRepublik history.

Also being debated is a bill that included suggestions from a multitude of people within Congress and the White House. The proposal is to re-institute Arm America – probably one of the most successful federal programs of 2010 and maybe even before then. Arm America is a program that provides free weapons to any American citizen. It had been very profitable for the government in terms of the number of Americans who were unable to consistently afford weapons but which could now fight on a regular basis. I’m not sure exactly when Arm America was stopped; but it’s now on the road to returning. S3RO, on behalf of Civil  Anarchy, introduced a comprehensive plan that includes a director-picking process, transparency plans, and more. The revival of Arm America has clearly been, if not the only, then one of the focal points of the Hamilton Administration to date.

It looks as though the 35th Congress will be an active and successful. In recent months, Congress has been sort of relegated to the home of MPP discussions and Congressional Budget Office donations. However, the recent influx of starry-eyed, ultra-active new Americans with great potential has sparked greater discussion and innovation on Capitol Hill. If Congress can continue its increase in activity of late, it will certainly become one of the most notable in recent memory. Bear in mind that in June, Congressional sign-in hit an all-time low of 12.
