The Walking Dead

Day 2,152, 13:42 Published in Thailand Croatia by Ashkoort

Do you remember the times when 1st and 3rd statement (ignore 2nd, it’s stupid) from this pictutere were true?
Saddly, I do. Years have passed since the last time I remember it to be true.
Although I no longer care for this game it’s still hard to stay neutral when you look at what this game have become.

This devastation started long time ago when the game owners decided to make the whole game faster in order to get more money. We’ve seen countless (unannounced) changes since, but to me it looks like eRepublik’s quality kept lowering with every new change.

Natual enemy law made declaration of war cheaper and easier than ever, new MPP rule allowed countries to conquer regions easier than ever (but also made them easier to lose therefore less valuable to anyone), auto attack rule ensures war is going on till the last man is standing, different economic (yeah right) bonuses ensures motives for the wars (even though they objectively don’t bring any difference on a global level), trade routes ensures conflicts and need for stability (which is possible only by eWorld peace or one side standing alive)...

All these changes were implemented to make this game faster, to ensure cheap, constant, numerous and extremelly demmanging wars that are supposed to make people spend more RL money than they did before when the game was more subtle, slower and balanced.

What did game owners achieve?

I think you don’t have to be genious to see that the game that used to have fine tuned economy system and balanced military segments changed and sacrificed economy in order to become “more dynamic” game based on wars is in big problems.

How is game based on wars supposed to work when you lack wars? And more importantly (to game owners ofc), how is it supposed to make money when there’s no balance?
Only balanced wars can make people spend RL money.

In my opinion game owners noticed these mistakes couple of months ago, but instead working on changes that might bring game closer to what it used to be, they’re decided to go other way.
It seems like they’re just trying to take what RL money is left to be taken from players and then end the misery of this dying corpse.

MU tournaments, country tournaments and tournaments based on individuals can be explained only by that logic.

How did it come to this?

The World is Ours

There are two key elements, but only one is the real cause of this well of boredom eRepublik turned into.

1) Process of speeding the game up

You can say more is less, because you get bored and things lose purpose and excitement when they are numerous and happen too often.

More wars and more battles were interesting at start, but after months (even years now) of dozens of constantly active wars and dozens of active battles each day, battles lost excitement they used to have.

When high quality products became easy to make and easy to get, those products lost value and economy collapsed.

When game owners turned players to individuality eRepublik lost its social dimension.

2) Adaptation

I don’t know many people that approve changes eRepublik went through and it seems like vast majority feels like game subdued, but still many adapted and mastered new ways of eLife.

I think of TWO of course. I don’t want to be misunderstood. I don’t see TWO as negative for game or anyone else, I see them as product of development of this game.
We thought cyclic game like eRepublik can’t be won, but we’ve all been wrong. The World is Ours or The World is Theirs (depening on the perspective) won. TWO won it fair and square by the features given by game and by adapting to them.

But...I can’t get rid of the feeling that game owners by changing the game into this broke it.

Games are supposed to be fun (no matter if you’re winning or losing), but can anyone trully say “I’m having fun” now?

I don’t want to discredit people that built TWO and directed it into “winning the game”, but I really can’t see this as a victory.
Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t one of those articles “begging” for a change of alliances, because that doesn’t change the concept of the game.

It is likely that TWO will fell apart like any other alliance that managed to dominate, because once you conquer everyone you have no one to fight and then you fight within your ranks and bring the alliance down. We’ve seen it many times before, but no alliance ever had this domination and had the right to claim the victory over the eWorld and game itself.
Game is cyclic and every alliance falls apart eventually and then new one rises to power till it falls apart and the process continues.

Decay of TWO would bring nothing more than a new start of a cycle that ends the same and brings only couple of weeks or months of true fun.

know that hopping to see some positive changes from the game owners is useless, but I can’t help it since it’s in my nature to hope for the best.
Whole point of this article is to point out some easy changes that would turn the eWorld upside down.

There are two rules I find resposible for the way this game developed.
MPP rule and auto attack rule.
As I said before, both were implemented in order to speed up the game, but after countless wars and battles turned against the game itself.

All MPPs shouldn’t be active all time, because it subdues whole military segment of the game to mere numbers. I believe there’s an easy way to change that in order to bring some strategy and brainstorming back to the game and still have no effect on the game dynamics.

When attacked, country should have all signed MPPs active, but when attacking, country should have only couple of chosen and signed MPPs active (let’s say 4).

If we combine this by eliminating the auto attack rule and return of the old initiative rule, we could have situations that wouldn’t affect global power relations directly, but would still give equal chance for having fun to everyone. Wars would still be easy to get started, battles would still be numerous, but some strategy would be brought back to life.

I hope we’ll see some positive changes, because I’d like newer players to experience the excitement and fun this game used to offer.

This is the view from my new residence 🙂

At the end, I’d like to use this article as a place to thank the good people of eThailand for accepting me to their country as a place where I chose to spend my ePension.

Enjoy as I do 😉
