The Responsibility of Governorship

Day 793, 21:14 Published in Japan Japan by Reiji Mitsurugi

This is Reiji Mitsurugi, addressing you from his private residence on Shikoku Island. I speak as a concerned citizen today, rather than President of the Imperial Sun Party or Speaker for the Imperial Diet. Hence, I use my private publication.

「 国民の福利は政府の責任だ 」

When one is elected to be a governor, one surrenders oneself to certain responsibilities. In our republic, the people put their trust in individuals to lead them properly, in the ways that most benefit them. In Japan, our people elect an individual to govern righteously, harmoniously, and with respect to the other elected governors.

It is with great sadness that I tearfully report that President KITA Ikki has disappointed me. A mentor and a friend (don't misunderstand, no matter his political mistakes, always a friend) to me, I had enormously high expectations for the Kita administration. Those expectations have been let down. And the Japanese people have been let down.

KITA Ikki is letting down the people.

As the President of the Imperial Sun Party, a recipient of the Order of the Golden Kite, and (lest we forget) an avid reader of this reputable journal of opinion, I imagined a Kita presidency would be an era of righteous action, of harmonious unity, of flourishing republicanism and of pan-Asianism. These ideas have perished from my mind. The best we can hope for is to prevent the total diplomatic isolation of Japan (I believe the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Angrr, is capable of this), to prevent the collapse of our monetary market and economy (I remain skeptical of Huang Chung, Minister of Finance), and a swift end to the dictatorial administration.

Rest assured, I am no democrat. I am a firm believer in an authoritarian republic, just as the Imperial Sun Party exists to promote. But the authority of the state must be used to promote and preserve a harmonious society under our sovereign the Emperor. That is the image of an Imperial Sun future. Kita has failed to bring that kind of governance; not only has he failed the people, he has also failed the Party.

Party officials are disappointed

But you are only hearing my rhetoric right now. What has Kita actually done or not done? Well, the catalyst, the final straw on this old camel's back, so to speak, was this matter of a mutual protection pact with Greece. The President had been reluctant, despite the significant outpouring of support in the legislature for the pact. So I took the initiative and launched a vote to indicate exactly where the support lies. The result of the vote was nearly 90% of present and voting representatives were in favor of the pact, including representatives from the Imperial Sun Party, the Godzilla Party, the Sumo Fitness Club and the United Lolies of Japan. The President, as of this publication, remains stubborn.

That issue alone, however, is not enough to drive me to such a tirade as this. His blatant disregard for the republican system and the will of the people, though disturbing, is not enough. I respect the people's decision to elect him. But please, my friends, there is more to the story, and I am not alone in my growing discontent.

President KITA Ikki has given the cold shoulder to China, to India, to Malaysia and Thailand, to all the peoples of East Asia. There have been no top-level talks between the Chinese and Japanese presidents, and I strongly suspect Kita hasn't met with other Asian leaders either. He has geared his foreign policy toward some sort of pro-western agenda that certainly does not sit with the principles of the Imperial Sun Party, and I certainly hope the people of Japan don't approve either. What started as a non-aligned policy (of which I whole-heartedly approve) has become an abandon-Asia policy, an ally-with-the-Russians policy (even as the Chinese battle the Russians in a desperate fight for northeast China in Jilin), it's a never-deploy-our-soldiers policy (even as the Chinese, again, battle for the freedom of Manchuria). The Kita administration's foreign policy has ignored the needs of our friends in Asia, more concerned with appeasing Phoenix leaders in Budapest or Moscow or wherever that decidedly western alliance governs itself. He worries that deploying troops to Jilin or signing a mutual protection pact with Greece (a most noble nation whose battles have served Japan well in recent days) would upset Russia and the rest of Phoenix.

KITA Ikki's foreign policy.

Well I certainly hope it does upset them! This is the same Phoenix that rejected Japan's ultimatum. They rejected our outstretched hand of diplomacy, forcing us to give up our land to the United States. This is the same Phoenix that continues to occupy Jilin, Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang, despite continued efforts by the Chinese to remove them. This is the same Phoenix that has just started a new offensive against mainland Asia. I consider it an honor to upset those criminals. Were I not so sure I can do more for the cause of Asia from the government here in Japan, I would be there myself, fighting in each battle in Jilin for the freedom of the eastern peoples.

To those who say we must stand with the winning team, to those who are more interested in the safe path than the righteous one, I promise you this battle will not last forever. China grows stronger every day. Their resources are plentiful, and their population is increasing rapidly. Before long, they will be a world power to rival any other, and eventually they will be a world power to surpass any other. Fighting on the side of China and East Asia is not only righteous, my friends, it is very much in our own interests. All we need is time.

The Chinese will not stand alone!

And when that time comes, the oppressive peoples of the west will regret what they have done to Asia. And no more will I write in English. The westerners will learn my language.

At least enough to beg for mercy.

For now, it is President Kita who must beg the forgiveness of the Japanese people, of the Imperial Diet, and of the Imperial Sun Party. Mr. President, you have disappointed all of us.

It is my great disappointment in KITA Ikki, and my concern for the future of Japan and Asia that has led me to declare my intention to pursue the Imperial Sun Party's nomination for the presidency of Japan. I have never sought the office before, or else had ambitions toward it. I realize the presidency is a demanding and largely thankless job. I prefer easier tasks that come with great kudos. Still, when the country calls in this way, it must be answered. That is why I must now put the Party in the difficult position of choosing between me and the man who led it (quite well, I might add) for some time. Unless he should opt not to seek a second term, of course.

This means I will not be running for a seat in the Imperial Diet, and thus the legislature will have to choose a new Speaker come the twenty fifth. As always, I trust their judgment.

「 政府に方針を変えさせるの は出来ない相談だ」

We are a republic. It is time we are reminded of this fact.
