The Question of Alliances- Staying or going
William of Edenbury
Welcome once more to the Sword and the Sakura News!
It has been a while since I last said that
😛
Today's article is to clear up the issue surrounding a very particular debate. That debate being whether or not we should remain in the Circle of Trust Alliance.
The problem so far is that it has happening primarily between the people that use the irc and Forums systems. That means that the regular player base has not really gotten an idea of what is going on, and in fact believe that the debate is solely being brought up by the Serbian players to try to ally with their homeland. This is not the case.
I shall now try to give you a more or less unbiased view of what the debate entails. Though of course, take everything you read with a grain of salt.
Alliance Overview
There are many different types of alliances. Economic, Political, and Military for example. In eRepublik, the major alliances combine aspects of all the previous types, but focus primarily on the Military support. After all, you need a lot of damage to win battles and capture all those nice resources, while keeping your own resources safe.
So now that we know that, what do we look for in an alliance? Well that depends on the nation and its people. Some seek power, some seek influence, and others just seek friendship. I'll leave it up to you to decide what it is you want us to seek.
So have you decided what you want in an alliance? Good. And if you haven't don't worry, read on and you might get a clearer idea. Now then, lets move on to our current alliance situation.
Circle of Trust
As you all (hopefully) know, our current alliance is called the Circle of Trust. CoT is one of the two major alliances in the current game, and is considered to be the weaker one from a damage point of view. However, the recent victories against the Hungarian and Serbian Empires prove that damage isn't necessarily the end all be all.
Now then, I'm sure you want me to get to the argument already so lets go ahead and see why people want to stay and why people want to leave.
Reasons to Stay
The reasons to stay are pretty clear to most citizens.
1. We have some good friends in CoT and decent relations with many others.
2. CoT is one of the two major powers in the game. Everybody likes having a lot of strong allies.
3. Proximity. One might not think of this consciously as a reason to be in an alliance but countries do tend to side with their neighbors.
Reasons to leave
Here is where things get a little murky for many citizens. Please note I will use a little more description here then on the reasons to stay, because of this murkiness.
1. Lack of assistance. It has been quite a long time now that we were invaded by Portugal and we have received no official assistance from the alliance. We were assisted by multiple South American MUs, but they were mostly private and functioning without their government's orders. We actually did receive a priority placement once for a couple of hours but that was removed pretty quickly.
2. Diplomacy and Historical Friendships. While I did point out earlier that we have friends in CoT, we also have friends outside of CoT. Some of these friends have even helped us more than our own alliance. At the same time, we have less than warm ties with a few of the members of our alliance. People tend to want to stick with their good friends rather than a group of strangers.
3. Friction within the Alliance. Unfortunately I cannot describe this one too much because of the sensitivity of some information, but our government has had some issues with other Alliance members within the Headquarters. I myself have have more than a few issues with certain countries...
Ok so now you know the very basics of the arguments to stay and to leave. But if we do leave then what are our choices? Well we have many but for the sake of brevity let me point out some that have been largely dismissed and others that are at the forefront.
Dismissed options
What I mean when I say "dismissed" is that these options are not playing a big role in the argument for a non-CoT future. They are not off the table, but simply being considered as less than ideal by many.
1. Joining TWO- This is everyone's biggest fear but I can assure you that few people, if any, want to go down this road. TWO has many of our historical enemies and right now their HQ is largely collapsing anyways.
2. Going it alone- This option isnt really being considered because lets face it, everybody would immediately want some new colonies on our islands....
Options at the forefront
1. Joining the ex-EDEN alliance - This is the most discussed option right now. This would also put is in a neutral group that is not very involved with the two alliance, world domination system that always ends up happening in eRepublik.
2. Joining one of the smaller alliances - while not as discussed as much as joining ex-EDEN, these options are many and debates are heated in their own right.
So what do we do?
Most of you know that I have a tendency to make long articles and this one was shorter than it could have been. That is because the choices are up to you. I am not here to present the pieces of the argument that I want and then convince you to lean towards one side or the other, but simply here to get the conversation started somewhere that all our citizens can see it.
So you tell me. What should we do?
The comments section is below. Add in your own thoughts and debate with everyone else. The only thing I ask you to keep in mind is that our priority should be the future of Japan itself.

Hail WOLF!
Economically Japan is a strong country, the prices tend to stay stabilized and the expenses doesn't need to exceed the revenue. The major problem, i think, is the military. We are a small country and if we are attacked there is no way we can defend our regions alone. Therefore we need strong military allies that are willing to help us. Now, why should a country help us? What can we trade with them? Friendship? A shoulder to cry on?
A big alliance will always prioritize their biggest countries and that's what happened in CoT. Japan needed help, but we weren't worth helping. So to avoid this situations, i suggest an alliance with the true friends of japan, countries that will help our country because they know that we will help them if they are in trouble.
Now, should we leave CoT immediately? I don't think so. I suggest that we talk first to the countries that are willing to help us and then politely leave the alliance without unnecessary enemies.
"Economically Japan is a strong country" Huh?
Dude, our expenses don't exceed our revenue cuz we sign only 4 mpp a month and most MOF in the last 6 months spent 0 CC on the military.
We save to starvation.
Having a ton of MPPs doesn't help if those MPPs don't do anything.
I am still in the belief that we need to choose our countries carefully rather than spam MPPs.
I see the country as agglomerate of people and if products are cheap, people have a better life. And i also agree with ahava, we don't need to spam MPPs.
ahava, who's spaming mpp? do you call signing 4 mpp spamming?
How is a MOFA supposed to work with 4 mpps a month?
Relationships in foreign policy are long term. eSK is a long-term partner for us and yes we continue to sign mpp with it even if they can not do damage for us this month. If you don't understand that, you don't understand much of foreign matters.
divus, prices are low cuz demand is low not because of a high supply.
Production in eJapan is rock bottom.
tarasino: do you think we need strong economic allies to help our economy?
I'm just saying having 4 MPPs isn't necessarily a bad thing (as you seem to be insinuating above by stating we're putting so little money into it), we just need to pick carefully.
I know the reason for our MPPs this month was for getting DOs...but ofc, the situation may (and will probably will) require different MPPs next term.
That was a nice read..big vote.
Regarding the issue, for the most part I'll have to agree with Divus. We'll always be the last kid of the block in the big alliance as long as we're not under direct protection of some 'clan leader'. That's not even worth the mention considering our pride as a country.
CoT's lack of assistance after the occupation is understandable to some extent but if it continues even in the light of the current positive developements, that excuse is going to run out. And if it continues we will effectively represent the doormat of the alliance..which will hurt our pride as a country even more.
Joining Eden/Wolf would be our best option if the relations with CoT break down.
It's a circle. We can't make our economy better without resources. And we can't get more resources without money, for which we need resources.
Because of that, i'm for neutrality with a good set of MPPs with big countries. Mostly, such countries have sufficient damage which we can attract with new rules (CO).
I don't care which alliance we are, as far as we are helping them and they are helping us when we need it. CoT, EDEN, TWO, whatever...
eUSA a good friend of eJapan?
When did that friendship start? Because I remember them wanting to rent our regions to eRoC when the eSK+eJP-eRoC peace treaty had to be singed.
Fixed \o/
And sorry because of two comments in row. I don't think that eAmerica is our good friend. They are looking their... interests... all the time. They will betray us, as soon as they will see some bigger interest for them

My personal reasons to Stay:
Based on my experiene it seems like the purpose of most alliances is to divide the world into
a) countries you can attack for not being in your allance and
b)countries you can blame for not helping you enough with your war.
As a non-Warmonger nation with a rather small military we don't offer wars(for DOs) or noticable military support (to allys wars). So any support for us comes with no benefit and is at the bottom of the most alliance's priority list.
Without support we will loose, no matter who invades.
We might go down fighting but we still go down.
If it makes no difference which bunch of "nations who have signed not to invades us" we picked.,
then why not sticking with the current one. 🙂

point 3: experienced in this article. big salute for you all o/
btw, back to topic:
squibeel said it is so hard for us to enter an ally, considering our black past. i know that, i know what happen for us if we leave an alliance. so, let stay in CoT and see what happen with the alliance.
sometime, CoT is powerful than TWO, sometime it different. we called it circle of life xD
Leaving CoT isn't a fact of national interest, it is just SSG bribing CtG for support. Funnily enough ahava was one of those screaming against the evil serbs TOvers.
Believe me, you're not the only one who finds CTG support for me as a candidate to be quite ironic...I do too and said point (and the reasons why) were actually openly mentioned in a cross party PM.
Situations, whether they be international or domestic matters change and thus need to evaluated anew on occasion.
Forums and IRC users.
I found your problem eJapan.

My opinion, leave CoT but stay in good relations with our friends there. We can try to enter in some other neutral alliance. Sign few good MPPs with CoT friends and neutral countries, stay in good relations with some of ours neighbours and i think that we can ensure our freedom in near future.
High quality article....

First of all, I admit I've been inactive and missed a lot of these events. Still, after reading up on this, I remain in favor of CoT for the same reasons as when we joined it. We cannot win every fight, but being part of a major alliance does give us the chance to stand up and be counted to make a real difference for our allies. If there are some on the alliance council who are uncooperative, those are our diplomatic opportunities. Turn a nominal ally into a true friend. The alliances that last are those based on friendship rather than mutual interest, and CoT had a strong start along those lines. Even if recent events are less promising, we still have a better chance with CoT than with a brand-new alliance where each of the members might have a different idea of its agenda.
