The Pony Express Storyline

Day 5,563, 03:17 Published in USA USA by George Armstrong Custer

We also made the cover of TV Guide this week!

It’s been a while since I’ve written anything substantial-– let’s give it a try, eh..
We're not even to the second episode of the new show and you're already falling behind on the storyline.

Retooling the Pony Express

The Pony Express has a long history of delivering the best in media, but has struggled with declining numbers of active players, which translates to fewer articles being written and even fewer readers of the paper. No media to choose “best of” from, so no “best of” newspaper, right?
Well, in the words of my mentor Homey, “I don’t think so!”

I watch the Mary Tyler Moore show on old people TV. We all still love WKRP in Cincinnati. I remember News Radio with Phil Hartman. There’s a long tradition of doing stories about eccentric characters facing comedic challenges in newspaper or broadcasting jobs.
And the actual News itself wasn’t important to the story.

We have a News review newspaper with virtually no news to review. What a perfect premise for a TV show! It’s still got a main segment where the weekly news roundup is handled, so the Old Pony Express is still serving its purpose, but without the pressure of putting out a crappy edition due to lack of content.
I’ll build entire TV episodes out of no content, that’s what I’ll do!

Planting the little seeds, watching them shoost up from the rich brown soil... Wait, wrong show.

First hint of a new character happened in an endorsement article, when I mentioned seeing a shadowy figure roaming the White House halls at night.. Could be the President, or a janitor.
I followed that saying I’d be voting for the janitor and spreading that joke around. But, who is this janitor? Why is this a thing?

Then there’s a Pony Express due out, and the lack of available content is disheartening, so I made a top pic of “Media being hauled off by EMS” and started the “media on life support” storyline.

Next, a top pic and a blip story about Janitor George being honored by the President, in the Government News newspaper.. Who is this guy??

The Pony Express published mid-week with an “Auditions and Screen Tests” edition. The ICU segment is established with a theme of comedic insensitivity. The series of “screen test” pics signal the advent of rotating guest hosts.

The NEW Pony Express Show debuted with Guest Host Kramer, had a perfectly (hilariously) horrible ICU spot, and managed to fill out the News segment quite nicely. The graphics are fantastic, the whole thing looks great.
We see Old Man Custer as Producer, Jude Connors as Director, and the Control Booth interacting with the guest performers in their segments.
Before even publishing that Friday paper I had already been working on the following week’s show starring Krusty the Clown, so I wrote that into the show and closed the Kramer episode with “I’ve got Krusty on line 2.”

The premier episode is available on VHS.

Now we’re cookin’ with gas.

I get word that the New Citizens Message that TheeDude and I worked up has been approved by the President and sent to Congress for their approval. Looked like news to me, so I posted a Government News Special Edition, with Krusty as the top pic.

Then, let’s go lamestream! We got the covers of both TV Guide and the AARP magazine, and here we are.

Next week’s The Pony Express Show Starring Krusty the Clown is complete but for filling in the News segment, and I’m rifling through the ol’ Rolo-Dex for our next guest host two weeks out. We’re keeping Krusty on as a writer, along with Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder.
My characters are developing nicely, we’ll be distributing on BluRay from OwlCorp Home Video, and the ratings are… well, I’m having fun, anyway.
