The Iron Elephant in the Room

Day 561, 23:36 Published in Canada Canada by JBob28

It can't be ignored any longer: Iron is power. In order to keep our troops well armed, we need high quality weapons so our men can do more damage on the battlefield. Simple concept. We build weapons in eCanada en-masse with relative ease, and there's no shortage of weapons manufacturing organizations. What there is a shortage of, however, is stable suppliers of iron.

As of this moment, the majority of eCanada's iron imports come from eSpain (and not just eCanada, but most of Western civilization). Two regions, to be specific: Asturias and Catalonia. In these two regions, a handful of iron mines supply a massive quantity of weapons manufacturers. It's no secret. If either of these regions were to be attacked, there would be a multitude of military responses on a global scale. Asturias shares a region border with eUSA, no worries for them there. First signs of trouble for the region would manifest itself elsewhere in eSpain. Catalonia, however, borders France on more than one front and provides a juicy target for any nation looking to cripple/control the power of many other nations.

Both regions carry Q5 defense systems and Q4 hospitals, and are easily capable of defending themselves without assistance. So what's the problem? The problem lies with leaving our nation's dependency on foreign materials for security purposes in someone else's hands. I'll get to my point right now:

For less than 60 gold, eCanada can ensure a stable source of iron for it's economy, forever.

That's right. 60 gold will buy a Q2 iron company and license to export from eSpain. Less than 60 actually. There are Q1 companies on the market selling for 15 gold (plus 20 for licensing, means bare minimum of 35 gold... 20 gold to upgrade it for good measure).

The only thing that would prevent eCanada from having a steady stream of iron would be an embargo from eSpain. And since we maintain good relations with eSpain, the odds of that happening are slim to non-existant. So what else would we need? What's the catch?

We would need some governing body to be present over the company, to ensure it supplies iron in the best way for eCanada. An eCanadian organization or two would likely have to re-locate to eSpain to oversee the operation. A substantial grant from the government would be needed (the 60 gold, or at least around 2000 CAD to use on the monetary market). Occasional goverment stipends to ensure the company is able to produce at capacity.

In this writer's opinion, it's a small price to pay to be able to ensure our military futures don't fall into the wrong hands. We can't always depend solely on Quebec for our domestic iron to see us through troubling times. Iron importing is essential. It's a modest proposal, I hope worth at least a little consideration...
