The Great Southern War

Day 871, 14:27 Published in Australia Australia by Aeros
SUMMARY

This morning the 9th of April, 2010, Australia launched a major offensive into occupied regions of South Africa. As the walls in Kwazulu Natal and Eastern Cape collapsed under an intense EDEN offensive, Indonesia chose the moment to launch an invasion of Australia’s Northern Territory. As of today, virtually all southern hemispheric nations in eRepublik are now at war, with 5 of the 9 Coveted High Diamond regions up for grabs.

SOUTH AFRICA

Following a bitter stalemate across the Indian Ocean, Australian Government officials vowed that the war in South Africa was far from over. Two day’s ago, the interim South African government declared war on Argentina and this morning launched an attack on Argentinean held Western Cape at the same time as an Australian backed invasion of the eastern coast was initiated. As Australian and EDEN troops hit the beaches on South Africa, reports came in of riots breaking out in Gauteng and downtown Durban in Kwazulu Natal. Brazilian military officials confirmed revolts backed by Australian commando units were launched in conjunction with the invasion, and subsequently ordered their armed forces to put down the insurrection.

South Africa descended into chaos as waves of rioting rocked the occupation zone

With the Brazilian military distracted by the revolt in Gauteng, Australian and EDEN forces stormed the beaches of Kwazulu Natal. Brazilian resistance soon collapsed as the wall descended -700k into the underground. By midday, Australian military command confirmed their forces were in complete control of downtown Durban, while Greek myrmidon units were said to have advanced as far as Newcastle and Lesotho. Declaring the battle lost, the Brazilian government retreated from the Kwazulu Natal. This time however, they could not follow through with a counterattack from Argentina, due to an Australian offensive against Eastern Cape and a South African offensive against Western Cape. The advances today have thus far marked the most successful invasion by Australia and EDEN into South Africa since hostilities erupted last month, forcing the South Americans to call for assistance from Indonesia in a desperate effort to regain initiative.

INDONESIA

Indonesian and Australian relations have been strained since Australia liberated Western Australia and joined EDEN. For the last several months an NAP has governed policy between our nations, but with Indonesia’s decisive defeat at the hands of the United States, their options for continued expansion became extremely limited. When the former Australian Prime Minister attacked Indonesian home territory, the activated MPP’s gave Indonesia a potential outlet back to their old holdings in Australia and South Africa. To make the move however would carry enormous risk, due to the menace of the United States on Indonesia’s northern borders. Defeat in Australia could sandwich Indonesia between two hostile camps. With the collapse of the South American defensive lines in South Africa, it seems Indonesia has at last decided to make its play on Australia.

The invasion has activated Australia’s MPP’s and this fight is likely to be one of the largest in recent memory. At stake for both Alliances are 5 high diamond regions slated to become titanium regions; 3 regions in South Africa and 2 regions in Australia. For now, Australia will be initiative blocked by Indonesia, with the potential for a permanent lock due to our massive border with Indonesia. This situation may at last goad the United States into doing what Indonesia has been begging them to do for months, and that is to launch their own attack on Indonesian home territory. Since the Brazilian President retreated several hours after the Indonesians launched their attack, an American assault on Indonesia will allow Australia to continue its offensive against Brazil without hindrance. For now, Australia’s government seems keen to try and avoid any further unpleasantness with Indonesia and is suing for peace. As a Senator, I also voted in favor with ending our war with Indonesia, though I am not optimistic they will accept.

FINAL ANALYSIS

Australia’s initial forays into South Africa have thus far been largely unsuccessful, with one major caveat. EDEN was able to restore South African territory and permit the South African government to seat a new congress during Australia’s March 22 offensive. With South Africa now actively participating in the war, Argentina and Brazil's efforts at tag teaming the Australian invasion will become much more complicated, as South African participation effectively ruins their double team strategy. This is partly why Indonesia has decided to attack Australia. Phoenix needs a third country in play to remove Australia’s initiative benefit for getting to choose when to attack. With the war that has been simmering for several weeks now erupting in a spasm of violence, it is becoming patently clear that the only two options remaining for Australia is complete victory or national annihilation.
