Leaders ~ Editorial

Welcome to the latest edition of the Economist. It seems that March is going to be a month of change. Not to sound too much like a certain American politician, but it is clear to one and all that the British political scene is going to undergo a shake-up. Firstly, party politics is shifting. Secondly, the world scene is undergoing a profound shift towards a more militaristic culture. What does this all mean?

It means that the UK has to change too. To match a changing world situation, we need to find new direction, new ideals and new purpose. We need to revolutionise the way we communicate, the way we fund our services and the way we deal with friendly nations. We need to make the UK an active country, with mass forum membership. But achieving that isn't about bribing people with prizes or funds, it is about offering them greater involvement in politics and Economics.

This week, this author founded a new company, the Co-operative gifting company. The company makes virtually no money, and I admit I won't recoup the investment I made to found it. But what is does do is involve the workers in the decision making process. It sells gifts cheaply, but pays high wages. Two members not on the forums are now involved because of the company. This is just one of many ways that you can get new people involved.

This country has the potential for greatness. We're well placed both geographically and politically. Safe behind our high walls, we're a country which can focus on conflict abroad. We have a huge and stable population, and one of the best business environments in the world. We have committed politicians. We have a strong military. We have the ability to quickly adapt, and that is the most important thing.

Leaders ~ Change is coming?

Political Parties. Most of you will recognise the names of the big three: UK Reform Party, The Unity Party and the People's Communist Party. Most of you will also know the Movement for Democratic Unity. Two months ago, the MDU were the exciting new kids on the block. Now, with the emergence and electoral success of the Free Thinkers Party, and now the Liberal Social Democrats, the UK is fast becoming a country with a 'big three' and a 'little three'. The dominance of the UKRP is definitely over, with their congress presence in decline, and their Presidential vote hovering but not growing. The PCP is similarly faltering, and sometime in the near future the Unity Party will take them over as Britain's second party. The Unity Party, one of the oldest parties in the UK, is well known for it's ability to change and reform to match the current political mood. Today their Spring Conference will open, and we will see if they can match their previous record by adapting to the modern situation.

The Liberal Social Democrats burst onto the scene this week, and now have fifty-two members. Founding member Hazzn is running for the Presidency now (see next article), and has written an article promoting the new party almost every day. But what does the new party represent? Well, the five points outlined by Hazzn are:

1.A stronger more active Military.
2. Fortress Britain.
3. Increased social activity. Let's find the fun a little!
4. Lowered Government spending. Cutting the crap!
5. Increased power to MoF and MoT.

The Economist doesn't mean to be pessimistic, but these things don't seem to be particularly unique beliefs. Stronger military, more forum activity and a stronger economy are basically what every party believes in. We don't see any party saying that it is their goal to disassemble the military, increase government spending and take the fun out of the game. So what does the LSD stand for?

Britain ~ Presidential Elections

The current President, JerryGFL has announced that he is re-standing for President, and standing against him will be Oexis (MDU, FTP) and Hazzn (LSD). The Unity Party hasn't officially backed a candidate, but most TUP votes will probably go to Oexis. The Economist predicts a victory for the UKRP, with the MDU/FTP coming second.

Manifesto wise, the candidates aren't very inspiring. It worries us that people on the one hand complain about sheep voting, yet on the other hand they don't come out with many original or innovative policies. In an age of new parties, there are very few new ideas. However, one good thing to come out of the elections is a cross-party agreement to cut government spending, at least until the Economy has recovered enough to cope with high spending.

So far it looks like the elections are going to result in another clear victory for the UKRP.

Europe ~ Romania goes to war

Romania has been at war pretty much forever. However, in the last month they have been gearing up to make war on the East, and the titanic conflict has been marked out as a future 'World War' by some and as an Apocalypse by others (including the Indonesians themselves). The Iranians have been rapidly shifting regions around to try and get out of the way of Romania. Now Romania has declared war on Indonesia, but what does all this mean? Well the Romanians are determined to both secure their high-resource area, and divide Asia up into more manageable blocks. The nation engineered a political takeover of Pakistan on the twenty-fifth, and will probably take the Presidency today. This will cut Asia in half and damage Indonesian plans.

At the same time, Ukraine is to be freed to allow a manageable buffer zone to control attacks on the Romanian homeland. The Romanian army is preparing for a full scale invasion of Asia. Although the Romanians have promised to liberate China and India, the high resource areas will be the strategic target, as well as soldier training and pushing back the Indonesian menace from their borders.

So what do we think of this? Romania is the primary world power, and there is a pressure from within the country to test their strength against their main opponent. The Romanians have a right to act to fight against their enemies, and it is far better, in this publication's opinion, to attack a strong enemy that just conquer largely defenceless nations as the Indonesians do.

United States ~ Uncle Sam's War

Mexico. Many people are barely aware the country exists. However, in recent times it has become high-profile, mainly thanks to our very own ex-Prime Minister Dishmcds. The empty land to the South, however, is still largely inactive, and therefore a target for political takeover. Uncle Sam claims that the dual reasons for the invasion were to remove the Polish who had taken over the countries congress, and to expand the USA into new regions and increase the military power of the country.

We think that this is a mistake. The USA is seen as the last great non-imperialist power in Atlantis. This is one of the reasons why the UK has a 'special relationship' with the USA in-game, and why we have always stood beside the USA internationally. The USA doesn't have the muscle to be an imperialist power, it has too many inactive citizens. It needs to take a step back and see where this is going. PEACE have so far shown little interest in the country, but if the USA steps up to challenge them, it may find itself knocked back on its heels.

Business News ~ The Granary

The UK's only high production region is London, which produces grain. As a result, we have a plethora of cheap grain and food companies. The Ministry of Trade is encouraging us to export, and The Economist seconds this.

Sweden and Germany are big export markets, and Dish is currently working on a trade agreement between the two countries similar to the agreements between the UK and Germany and the UK and Australia.

A quick note from the Editor- I apologise for the brevity of this edition. In real life, this week has been a real struggle to stay ahead of the game. Elections for real candidates take precedence, and whilst I have been following the modest campaigns of eRepublikans, I have also been running the campaigns of real UK politicians. At this point my brain is virtual mush from no sleep and far too much work. Please vote and subscribe, and I will make up for it next week- Iain.
