Leaders ~ Editorial

Hello friends and welcome to this weeks edition of the Economist. Normally we publish on a Thursday, but with it being a bit of a mammoth work we sometimes have a few problems going to print before the deadline. This week has been so hectic, with my time being largely taken up setting up Camelot, a personal project of mine. This week we've seen the UK slide into a kind of malaise, as the government's presence has been almost eclipsed by the return of so many big names to congress and the upcoming Presidential elections.

Obviously the big topic of discussion now is 'where is the UK headed after Sara Droz?' The two main candidates for President are JerryGFL and Kumnaa. Jerry is primarily backed by the UKRP, his home party, whilst Kumnaa's main support comes from PCP. Jerry has been a Prime Minister in the past, and has a wealth of experience from two terms as leader of the eUK. Kumnaa on the other hands has also had a wealth of experience, but in the more technical and business sides of eRepublik. All in all, it is the tightest showdown since the Deathtoll-Relic competition of January 2009. It's impossible right now to call, but the decision of The Unity Party to back Kumnaa could be the deciding factor in who wins.

In addition this week we've seen a little bit of politics in parliament, as the new commons attempts to rewrite existing legislation to make it less confusing. Although this seems like a good idea, it makes me wonder what new congress members think they are actually achieving. Re-writing the works of others to make them more cohesive is helpful to new congress members but also achieves very little in real terms. Perhaps they can turn their attention towards the Economy, a far more pressing concern at the moment.

Leaders ~ Congress Elections

Well we had a topsy-turvy congress result in the in-game elections this week. With many of the existing congress quitting UK politics for now (many to join Camelot) and the return of many Paratroop Regiment soldiers to stand for congress, we've seen the whole political scene change very quickly. Many of the criticisms of the House of Commons have focused on the fact that they are inexperienced or unable to make sensible judgments. Although we have always disagreed with this analysis (sensible is subjective), it will be interesting to see if the 'old guard' players can do any better. In any case, as many of these candidates ran from the PCP (even the odd person, like Brodie, who did so to prevent the UKRP from losing a seat to him!), they have had a much stronger showing than normal. It remains to be seen whether the PCP will be able to maintain momentum or whether this blip in activity will die down after this month.

So for a little bit of analysis. At first glance PCP and UKRP appear to be the big gains on this front. But as always these numbers are deceptive. First of all, the paras ran from whatever party they felt like. They don't intend to follow any sort of party line, in fact some ran intentionally just to prevent fellow 'party' members they didn't like getting in. So let's see what the figures really look like.

Initial Glance

UKRP: 14
PCP: 12
TUP: 9
RFA: 3
FB!: 2

Para's taken out of it...

UKRP: 13
PCP: 3
TUP: 8
RFA: 3
FB!: 2
PARAS: 11

As you can see, the entire of congress is messed up this month. There are very few actives, and the Paras, who are a military wing of the UK, have a very large controlling proportion of the UK congress.

Britain ~ Interview with Kumnaa

This week we interview presidential hopeful Kumnaa, UK veteran, leader of the UK paras and CEO of Ape Industries. Kumnaa has impressed everyone with his skills in these areas, and now the PCP are putting him forward for UK President. Whether he gathers enough support to beat the UKRP candidate, JerryGFL, is a matter for debate, but the shout “Hail Kumnaa” and other similar slogans have quickly become popular in the UK.

So Kumnaa, what made you decide to run for President?

Well initially I started jokingly claiming to be running for president when it became obvious the current administration were making lots of mistakes. Some older players then decided it would be a good idea and convinced me. So here I am!

One area we're confident you're good in is the economy. Do you think the current state of the financial system was a motivation for you to become more directly involved?

Really it was the state of our foreignaffairs. I was there when Sara stormed into the Irish IRC channel and started aggravating the TW situation. I was there when Goku threatened the Swedes during the last days of Atlantis. I had to clean up after both 🙁 The countries financial problems are tiny compared to our international relations.

Foreign Affairs have been very important this term, with the collapse of the bi-polar alliance system. Do you have a direction you want to take the UK in post-Atlantis?

I still think its really too early to tell but I do think the options are either to stay neutral and maintain MPPs with our friends or join PEACE. PEACE have already stated any new alliance would immediately become an enemy and the UK is in no position to defend itself against a competent aggressor.

Germany has almost fallen by the time this has been published. Do you regret that the UK hasn't assisted our allies more strongly in their hour of need?

I think I would say I regret that we couldn't help rather than didn't. With a border with Sweden and the situation Goku left us in with the Swedes and Romanians I don't think it would have been wise to have gotten directly involved. Our general population did however make up for the very disappointing showing in the US/Irish TW despite the MoD's message not to get involved.

When will we see some detailed economic policy ideas from you?

Well thats a bit difficult at the moment, with all income taxes being in the process of being halved we still don't really know what state the economy will be in. I don't think its prudent to make any plans until we know what we have to work with.

You've referred several times to your team of advisors. Do you think that this election will be as much about supporters as it is about candidates?

A CP can't do everything on their own. A good government is about having the right people in the right positions and allowing these people access to advice from experienced people. I think the UK trusts myself and Jerry to pick good ministers and act if their performance isn't up to scratch which has been lacking this term.

This paper is read all over the eWorld. Many of our readers will probably have used the tools from your website, cccp-group.org. Do you think your technical skills as a programmer would be useful for a Prime Minister to have?

I don't really think it would but it probably means I understand the game mechanics better than some. I had grand ideas, which I started developing, when I was appointed Para CO but quickly found that once I was in the position there simply wasn't time to do both and this will definitely be the case as CP. It would probably be valuable for the next CP as I know what he'll be wanting and I'll probably have the time to make them.

Finally, do you have any message you would like to give to the Economist's readers?

Just to vote on the candidates manifesto rather than what party they are in and that with a little practice, you too can draw as well as me.

Britain ~ Interview with JerryGFL

JerryGFL has been a regular part of the UK political scene for more than six months, as a Minister, then Prime Minister. Now he is the best hope of the UKRP to win this election. We interview on of the UK's quietest ex-Presidents, but also one of the most popular.

Hi Jerry. What made you decide to rerun for President of the eUK?

The country is in need of a good leader who has the necessary experience, and I feel that I can give what is needed. I have once before fixed this country and I am confident I can do it again.

Last time one of the biggest challenges you faced was dragging the economy out of recession. Not much has changed! Do you think you're well qualified on this front?

Well when I left office, we were on an upturn. Of course I cannot claim credit for that alone, it was a superb Ministry of Finance staff that I had behind me then. However you can trust me to choose my cabinet wisely and without any interest which party applicants belong to etc.

Have you got any specific economic proposals, and if so when will we see them?

Not wanting to give too much away there is a few simple yet effective plans which you will see in my manifesto that will hopefully ensure continued economic growth.

Foreign policy has been critically important this term, and many people hold this as their main reason for being unhappy with the current government. What foreign policy goals do you have?

The most important goal is to ensure the integrity and safety of this country before pledging allegiances to an Alliance. We need to first establish who he really can trust on a friendship basis. Again more on this in my manifesto.

Do you believe that now, as the Swedish-German war is drawing to a close, that we should have done more to help Germany?

As many of you may have noticed I was amongst the first to condemn the Swedish actions, and I think that our country should have taken a more definite stance than just declaring neutrality. While that decision maybe was diplomatically correct, it was not the right one. This goes with my foreign policy of working together with other countries that share a common interest with us.

What do you see as the future for Britain in a post-Atlantis world? Do you have any intention to commit to an alliance?

Apart from the answer to question 4, here is a sneak preview of my manifesto:
“In the current state of World Affairs, any new Alliance must be well established, yet we will not rule out joining an existing one. We must remain open and cautious to every option available to us, and as a group between the House of Commons and House of Lords make a decision we are all comfortable living with.”

Some have said that they want a change after the last UKRP government. What would you say to those people?

I always find it amusing how things are branded UKRP government. It wasn’t an UKRP government it was Sara’s government. And I am not Sara. This is about the candidate more than the party.

Have you got a message you'd like to give to the readers of the Economist?

This Friday I would be grateful if you vote for me after having considered both candidates manifestos and ideas as well as previous experience.

Europe ~ German-Sweden War

Germany this week saw a concerted attack by both Sweden and Poland. After the fall of Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria, Germany has lost most of its important regions and most of its reason to fight back. What is embarrassing about this is that the UK, USA and Germany's other allies barely fought in the battles for these regions. Individuals and organisations did so, but against the orders of the UK government. Some have said that this was necessary, as Sweden borders the UK. However, that logic doesn't hold. If our countries could collectively stop Sweden in Germany, then they could do so in the UK as well. In any case, all those low level citizens add up to quite a heavy amount of damage.

So to those worrying about a conquest of the UK- stop worrying. Even if Sweden conquered us, our huge but weak population would mean we'd take over their country after the first elections. This means that we can largely act without worry regarding the Germany-Sweden conflict. Now, with our allies on the back foot, our support is more important than ever. We must support Germany's battle for its remaining regions, and we must do so openly with our armed forces.

Where will the war go from here? Strategically, possession of Rhineland-Palatine would put Sweden in a position where it borders France and the Netherlands, allowing for further expansion. It is difficult to see what they will do however, as by now their treasury will be almost exhausted. Although they could perhaps defeat Germany, the PEACE nations that are now within striking distance- Italy and Hungary- are a different matter. A counter-attack by Germany, although dangerous to the Swedes, would not be as dangerous as an Italian attack through Bavaria or a Hungarian one through Austrian original regions.

Europe ~ Romania breaks out

This week we've also seen Romania break out of its self-imposed exile, attacking and conquering Podolia, a high-Iron region in Eastern Europe (former Ukraine). They then used the puppet state of Moldavia to occupy their non-original regions as both a buffer and a means of training. Their original goal was to expand further to create a buffer around Podolia, but in the end they were forced to abandon the region or face losing it to Hungary the following day.

The plan is now to stay in Moldavia until after the elections on the 5th and then look again at reconquering the Moldavian territories. Of course this depends on the situation in Indonesia.

Middle-East and Africa ~ Occupied South Africa

South Africa is now entirely under mixed Brazilian and Indonesian control. They have been using sabotage tactics against Brazil especially, using their population to lower Brazilian productivity and flood their media with spam. They're (amusingly) calling it a press take over. They're calling on all South Africans to write spam articles and vote their fellow South African's articles into the top 5. This is more of a minor annoyance to the Brazilians, but will probably make them reconsider who to conquer in the future.

If you want to participate in the media bombardment then you need to go to here and vote up the articles titled [South Africa].

Asia ~ Matzanesia

We also saw the Romanian takeover of Indonesia's congress this week. The Romanians deliberately left citizens behind when conquered, and by standing for election in the sparsely populated regions of China, Russia and India occupied by Indonesia managed to claim 50% of Indonesia's congress. Since then that majority has been reduced, but by co-ordinating members they have succeeded on several attempts to sabotage the Indonesian economy, including a donate directly to the Bank of Romania from the Indonesian treasury.

The takeover was planned by Victor Petrescu, who previously had organised a takeover of Ireland. He organised citizens from East and West Siberian regions to move all over Romania to vote. Since the election their main tactics have been to fight against Indonesia in resistance wars, work with minimal wellness and flood the media with spam, much like in South Africa. The more obvious forms of sabotage, such as raising taxes or the minimum wage, are made more difficult because some congressmen quit and other members of the Matzanesia party are eIndian and were blackmailed by Indonesia to quit. The alternative was the destruction of eIndia.

The next goal for Romanian exiles in what they call 'Matzanesia' is to win the Presidential elections, as can be seen in this article here. We'll see how that goes.

Business News ~ Raw Materials Scheme

The UK Government would like to remind UK owners of foreign Raw Materials companies that you may be applicable for the RM scheme, a scheme run by the Ministry of Trade which refunds Import Tax. Please PM lxbrtldisaad on the UK forums or in game at this account.
Thank you for your time.
