The day I won the game (2)

or The day I lost the game

The battle was short.
The defending army was quickly slaughtered by the greenskin hordes. Swords, flags and corpses were spread all over the field.
An army captain and a mercenary banner bearer were summing up the event.
- It was a real mess, said the captain.
- I can see that.
- The king rushed and ordered a head-on attack. They soon outflanked us. We were proper equipped but outnumbered and that was it. Now the greenskins are marching towards the defenceless fortress.
- If the attack hadn’t been rushed, me and my mercenaries could have arrived in time. What happened to the so called king, anyway?
- I don’t think your men could have made any difference. And about that fool, he either fled or was slain by the greenskins.
- What are you up to now?
- I will head to the fortress. Maybe I can help there, shelter some people and save what it can be saved. Won’t you come with me? Maybe some from your unit too?
- There is no future in there. The horde will pillage and burn the place down to ashes. As about me and my men, we will split and find someone or something else to fight for.
By saying farewell to each other, they went different paths. The mercenary planned to travel West to meet again with his family.

This soldier’s name isn’t important. He was born in the capital city of Trivia in a noble family but wicked circumstances forced him to leave and join the army. Now, after numerous fights and wars he took part in, he thought of settling down somewhere. As times in his homeland changed, he felt like going back. His father was a rich merchant in the Citadel of Trivia. Although he was a greenskin, the cosmopolitan kingdom of Trivia discriminated no one, maybe only the poor.

As soon as he entered the Citadel’s gates he went to meet again with his old father, after so many years.
- Good to see you, son.
- I’m glad to see you too. Before anything else, I want to show you something.
He took from his bag an old artifact, a strange cup of some sort.
- I brought this from the edge of the world, I know it must be worthing something for a collector.
- It’s something but, unfortunately, the wars held last decade ago changed our economy and prices from scratch, so I don’t think this gem values much now.

After that, the old merchant told the soldier that he was in the governor’s council for a few years. He even had the chance to be governor himself but it didn’t had to be. However, he still remained in the high society of Trivia and now, the council members were looking for someone of high rank or from a noble family with no stained record to be crowned governor. In a try to end the internal disputes, he proposed his son, if he was able and fit, to be the governor.

He, indeed, ended up being governor of Trivia. His reign lasted 3 years...the amount of time I played in this game.
