The Canadian Tax Debate (Follow Up)

Day 483, 01:15 Published in Canada Canada by SensibleVoices
(PS - This article would not make any sense unless you read the previous one. Please read it here and comment.)

My recent article stirred up a healthy debate about taxes in eCanada. Citizens came forward with differing views both for and against the changes that were proposed.

I sincerely thank all those who participated actively in the debate. It was a learning experience which lead to a better understanding of the issue. This kind of discussion between citizens is highly encouraged, it gives our government officials (who are pretty aloof at times) a feel of what the people are talking about.

In this article, I've summarized all the discussions we had over the previous article. These discussions were held in the comments, the eCanada forums and IRC.

I have decided to list the pros and cons of the CBTS based on the dialog we had.

Pros

-The common man gets more of his paycheck. This will boost consumerism which is good for the economy.

- A richer person gets taxed more, since he/she buys more and higher Q products. This is the closest thing we can have to a Progressive Income Tax in the present in-game mechanics.

- Favors the new/poor players by taxing them less and allowing them to progress quickly in the game. This may even help retain new players who usually leave in a few days due to the slow pace of things.

Cons

- The enormity of our current budget. It requires a lot of money to run the CAF and buy Defense Systems and Hospitals. This money has to be derived from income taxes as they are a more stable source of revenue to the government.(As pointed out by Derakor, Rearden and Yonsil)

- Since a majority of taxes would be Sales Taxes, this may lead to the emergence of a black markets, where trading is done off the government radar, through donations, hence escaping taxes.

- “... problem with only VAT tax is the disincentive to consume at higher levels. There needs to be an incentive to get up to the higher echelons.”, James Haskanyne (couldn't phrase it better than him). CBTS is unfair towards the rich guys who worked very hard to make their money and reach where they are.

Also pointed out in the article was the unevenness of Income Taxes in different kinds of companies. It should be noted that the Minister of Finance, Alexander Rearden participated in this discussion and failed to give a clear reason as to why the taxes are uneven.

I urge my fellow Canadians to actively participate in this debate and others on the forums. Your comments and input could lead to huge changes in how our country runs. You do not have to be in politics to make a difference. You can start right here.

Thanks for reading and supporting me with your generous comments.
I owe it all to you.
