Gong Hei Faat Choi is a Cantonese pronounciation, and the Mandarin pronouciation is Gong Xi Fa Cai.

Because in old times, most overseas Chinese came from Canton province, so many coming Chinese words in English are from Cantonese.

For example, we all know "dim sum" is kind of Chinese snack.
It is from the Cantonese pronounciation, and the Mandarin pronounciation is "dian xin". But they share the same Chinese characters for it: 點心(TC)/点心(SC).

For most criteria in the world, even many ethnic Chinese regions, such as HK,SG,TW,MY, various Chinese languages(Mandarin,Cantonese,Shanghaines e,Hokkien,etc.) are considered as different languages.

But in mainland China(the C*mmun*st P**ty gov*rnm*nt) set other languages as "dialect" under Mandarin, and the Mandarin is the only standard Chinese. The aim is to unite all phonetic regions under 1 China.

It should be a good thing, but still have negative effect, as Mandarin is the mother language of nothern Chinese, it makes nothern people think they are the pure Chinese prior than other
"dialect people", and call dialect "the birdy tone".

One thing happened recently. Shanghai is the biggest and most properious city in China, and local people speak both Mandarin & Shanghainese. Nowadays more and more northern people immigrate to this land.

One day, two narrators made a joke in Shanghainese through their broadcasting on the Radio(most of the time they were speaking Mandarin, the so call "standard pronounciation&quot😉. Then a northern people called to the radio,&quot😉o not speak any more Shanghainese! You piss off Shanghai locals!". That made two narrators felt angry,"that's our land, our cities, why local people cannot speak Shanghainese in Shanghai? And why you immigarted to the land you don't like and try to provoke locals? Go away as far as you can!"

That caused a big argument through media. Shanghai locals think they have the right to defend their mother tongue, nothern people say "narrators as public roles should not say 'go away' to their audiance on air", and support the idea to "eliminate all dialects all over China".

Perhaps northern peole don't know, even when a north american leader came to Shanghai, he used "nong ho" to greet local people instead of "ni hao".
