As the elected representative of the people of Gangwon-do in the Diet of Japan, it is only fitting that we here at the Taishou (that is, me, Reiji Mitsurugi) occasionally publish something about the land that has seen me so fit to govern. The peninsula (or at least all of it below the 38th Parallel) is Japan's beloved protectorate, the Republic of Korea. Lately, she has been at the forefront of our minds here in the Tokyo, and let me explain why.

There has been a great deal of concern over Japan's right to legally act as Korea's protector. For months in the popular media this has been an issue, but only recently had it risen in a legitimate international court. We, the government of Japan, made our case and were granted a de facto declaration of legitimacy. We now have that much more responsibility to ensure the continued safety of the Korean people.

But there are those amongst us who would challenge that safety. Some radical factions within the Protectorate itself want to rebel against Japan, and once again set Korea adrift, naked in the breeze, as it were. Other agitators come from outside the borders. Not the least of whom are the Juche Box Party of China, my mortal enemies to whom I affectionately refer as the “Boxers.” Their imperialist commitment to the conquest of East Asia includes the breaking of Korea from Japan (not to mention the eventual subjugation of Japan itself). I have fought them in every possible manner, and I will continue to do so. The government of Japan will not cede our Protectorate to greedy foreigners.

This leads us to some less violent attempts on the Republic of Korea. Twice now has the Japanese government been approached by wealthy foreigners looking to buy a piece of the peninsula, either for crackpot social experiments or shady economic gain. Each time, Japan sent the interested groups away. Neither our Korean brothers nor their homeland are for sale. The Great Japanese Empire has made a solemn vow to protect the Republic, a vow we absolutely will not break. President of Japan, the Honorable Kokawayoshi Makoto, had this to say on the subject:

“Ever since the agreement by the Korean and Japanese governments had been, with the consent and backing of their respective populations, forged, the Japanese government has vowed to defend the Korean people, their assets and interests in the same fashion that it would defend Japanese assets. The Japanese people, nation and government will never compromise the trust of their Korean brothers and sisters for petty strategic considerations.”

These ideas are only that much more important with rising international tensions and talk of war on a grand scale. The people of the Protectorate have nothing to fear so long as Japan remains watchful over her. We have a saying here in Japan that literally translates to 'Ten Thousand Years!' It is a cheer used to support things, equivalent to the English phrase: “Long live...!” And so, with this in mind, I say: Ten Thousand Years to Korea! Ten Thousand Years to Japan! Ten Thousand Years to an Unbreakable Bond!
