Some Thoughts on Power

Day 573, 18:45 Published in USA USA by Nutmegger

I made a post recently in a Magistrate case where I presented my version of the Dick Cheney theory of power: There is no good and evil, just power. Some have it and some don’t. The trick is to make sure that you have it and carefully dole it out to those you can control.

The Nixon equivalent statement is that if the president does it, that means it is not illegal.

Fortunately, over time, our RL nation has moved generally away from this position, slipping back in times of crisis. The question is whether the eUSA will act as a nation of men (and women) or a nation of laws.

A definition of maturity which I think sums it up is that maturity is the power to take action but the prudence not to do so. Knowing when to use power is key to being effective.

Ultimately, I think that powers such as eHungary and eIndonesia will learn the same lessons which have taken many RL countries generations to realize. People, and countries, have memories. If you forcefully push your position down the throat of your enemies, they will resent you for it, and will stop at nothing to resist you. It may be that Germany's animosity towards Sweden and Poland will be a longer term legacy than any temporary benefit which Sweden and Poland have gained. Time will tell. Even now, the Greeks and Israelis are struggling against the Turks.

It is hard to keep people down forever. Sometimes it is wiser not to try.
