Rule of the people

Day 612, 12:00 Published in Singapore Singapore by elleana

δημοκρατία - dēmokratía, "popular government", coined from the Greek root words δῆμος (dêmos), "people" and κράτος (krátos) "rule".

Democracy, in its purest form as in place in the Athenian city-state of ancient Greece, involved a system where all citizens had the right to participate in the decision making process of the government; and there were no elected representatives. While such a system is no longer practical today, a democratic government still holds true to the ideals of dēmokratía, that is, governance of the people, by the people. Those given the privilege to govern should govern with the needs, wants, aspirations, dreams of the governed foremost in their minds.

It is with this sole aim that I seek your vote in the current congressional elections. I may not have a stellar track record as some of the other candidates may have, but I present myself a solid, dependable citizen of eSingapore, ready to serve in the best interests of the very same people who would place their faith in me.

As the American President John F. Kennedy remarked in his Inauguration address after he had been elected President of the United States of America, "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." I stand before you no longer a passive citizen of my country, but ready to serve in whatever way required of me.

If you have not made up your mind on which candidate to vote for, I humbly request that you consider my candidacy in a favorable light, and if you should be so convinced, to cast your vote for me. Thank you.
