Remembrance

Day 2,104, 10:31 Published in Belgium USA by MaryamQ
Time for Three perform Leonard Cohen

Baby, I’ve been here before.
I know this room, I’ve walked this floor.
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch,
but love is not a victory march,
it’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah!

In eLife, as in RL, we are faced with constant change. Just when we think we understand how to do something, the rules change. Just when we feel close to people, they change, or we do, or perhaps it is both.

We may not like some of these changes, but they are an inevitable part of living. To mourn the past is to fail to enjoy the present, and the present is all we really have.

In the past couple of weeks, change has been very much on my mind. I have experienced some major RL transitions, both in my own life and in the life of someone who became a part of my family circle long before many of you were born. In game, also, I have observed farewells from several people who have touched my eLife in various ways, one of them for more than 3 years, and I have learned of the RL death of a young man in his 20s, whom I only met briefly, but who was dearly loved by a close friend of mine. Respecting her wish, I will not name him, but he has been very much on my mind.

All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

The one recurring comment I have seen from players is that we only stay in this game for the friends we have made, so what do when do when those friends fly away “into the light of the dark black night”? In eBelgium, we have voted for Aldous the Meek Day and Backwards Day, but the list of those who have made contributions and will be missed is really too long to have a special day for every one of them, so I have proposed a national day of remembrance (discussion found here) and with it, a Hall of Fame. The idea is that we can remember those who have had an impact on our life in eBelgium with articles and events, and that names may be added to the Hall of Fame as the need arises.

This idea has a lot of support in the forum community, but this should be a day for everyone, not just those active on the forum, so what are your ideas? Should we do this? What day seems good to you? And most importantly, who is it you hope eBelgians will never forget?

I did my best; it wasn’t much.
I couldn’t feel, so I learned to touch.
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you.
And even though it all went wrong,
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
with nothing on my lips but Hallelujah!

Who has touched your eLife? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
