-Ezt most miért mondod?
Nincs is országotok!
Oda megyek dolgozni, ahova a Kormányom küld.
-Megint kezded ezt a Kormány izét…
-Ja
-OK, fogjunk kezet! Én is kíváncsi vagyok.
-A francba!
It all started with a conversation between a Martian and a settler from Planet Earth. Althogh they spoke each other’s language, the more they talked the situation went more and more awkward. They had to realize, that something was definitely wrong.
-I came here on planet Mars, just because I appreciate the new things and here I am amazed every day. This planet is awesome.
-Well…you look to me a bit weird. Yes, our planet is awesome, but it is not your business.
-Why do you say that? I came here in a deserted country, where most of the people have been killed by smallpox. It is You and Your people who do not exist any more. You are all dead.
-Me? Come-on man, from Planet Earth! You have no mother, you have no father, you have been teleported here by ghosts. Thus it is you , who cannot be real.
-I donno what do you say about my mother and father, but I can assure you, that I am more than alive. And all my friends are also real, unlike your civilization, which is dead.
-Damn, you. We have cities, ministries, institutions, army, ambassadors, President. What else do you need as a proof that we still exists?
-Dreams…my friend, just dreams. Your ministries, your institutions do not function. You have no ambassadors, as you do not have allies either.
-We do have an army and we do have allies and friends. It is you, who does not have allies. Actually we are proud to have a wonderful Ministry of Social Affairs.
-Yup. But you have no children. So why do you need Social Ministry? You need a Hospice maybe for your dieing people.
-Partially true, but…our people are dieing because of your people.
-No. Your people are dieing, because they have no endurance. And your President is doing what? You do not have a country. What can do a president without a country?
-Oh really? Let’s say, you do have a country, but I would argue that YOU have a President.
-Boob implant!
-Idiot!
-And now what? Should we continue insulting each other?
-Maybe one of us is totally wrong.
-I am more than sure about this my friend. But do you know what? Maybe both of us are wrong.
-I feel a bit confused. I have to wash myself in the river.
-What river? It is all dried out ages ago. That’s a samba dancer’s junkyard now. And behind that it is a carioca and a gaucho graveyard.
-What? Junkyard? Graveyard? You must be joking. That’s our wonderful capital.
-You do not have a capital, as you do not have a country either. The real capital is 500 Km to the North. And I insist, that what you see is nothing else, but a deserted diamond mine.
-If that would be so, it’s all your fault. Our mines are full with people, not with ghosts like You are.
-You mean PEOPLE like me. We are real. But where are working the dieing ghosts like you?
-I am not a dieing ghost and it is not your problem where do I work. It is top secret and our Government is in charge to give us work.
-Here we go again.
-Yup
-We cannot convince each other.
-Maybe we can. May I ask you to touch me?
-Hands off…I’m not a gay.
-Never mind, I will touch your hand anyway. I want to know which of us is real. Here is my hand. Take it!
-OK, let’s shake hands
-Damn! I can’t touch you man.
-Neither do I.
-So, you must be dead.
-I am afraid, we are all dead, my friend.

fascinating
ray was boring sometimes, but he had some great stories
ummm Ray Bradbury isn't dead. Why would you say "in memory of"?
This article made me shitpants at first. Quick check in Wikipedia proved you a liar. No surprise there. Besides, Bradbury's gonna live forever.
Anyway, if you had actually read The Martian Chronicles, you would know that the first Earth crews to land on Mars were actually killed by the Martians. Furthermore, Martians, for the most part, hid from the Earthlings, and most of them died from a plague no doubt brought by the Earthlings. And most Martians used their telepathy to appear as an Earthling's close friend/kin, often soothing an Earthling's emotions albeit in an unethical way.
And then Earth was destroyed in a nuclear holocaust, which I guess is pretty accurate for Hungary. I'll give you that. Otherwise, read the "book" (it's more of a collection of stories) instead of pretending you know what it's about and writing an article that has no conceivable similarity to the book.
Bradbury is rolling in his wheelchair.
@Shiloh
Uh, my mistake...I checked, correct he is still alive, aged 90 and I also hope he will live forever or at least another 90 years.
In my article mostly I was referring on his short story called Night Meeting. There are resemblences, but differences as well.
-Settlers came to Mars seeking for a second home in case Earth would be destroyed by a nuclear holocaust: YES, your remark is pretty accurate. Having Romania, Croatia as neighbours and Poland next door, eHungary is not a safe place to live.
-Martians killed all early settlers: YES, indeed. The brasilians, and argentinians, were successfully repelled and I am also referring to them in the article (graveyards)
-Last wave of settlers brought the plague which finally destroyed the Martian civilisation excepting for those who were isolated in a mental asylium. (aka FORUM). Finally I decided not to use this one, since I wanted to concentrate on the dialogue.
-I did not bring in the telepathy issue, it did not fit to the story.
Finally: I read the Martian Chronicles almost 30 years ago. Although the book fascinated me at that time, I think it is natural, that I cannot remember every detail.
Hey monti I think You have heard the riport yesterday with Teller Ede in MR1-Kossuth. He talked about the old joke in USA the 1950-s years when there was more Hungarian nuclear scientist in the States then native and they said about Hungarians "The Martians among us". 🙂
vote- a fordítás reményében 🙂
Khmmm....
We all very proud of "our" Ede Teller, who gave the wonderful H-bomb to the American Imperium. This was a very good thing and profitable to hungarian people also.
Thanks!!
Garfield neked semmi se jó. Úgyis megcsinálták volna, csak később.
az english verzsönben szó esik vmi mellimplantátumról is 🙂
@montaigne
I remember that story. The Martian and Earthling meet each other by happenstance, talk, get freaked out, then leave. I haven't read it in a while either (some Czech bastard stole it from me), but I remember it well enough. I still fail to see the relevance, since true South Africans would be the Martians and the PTOers would be the Earthlings.
And to refresh your memory, not all the Martians were extinct. Most of them were wiped out, yes, but civilizations still lived on. Most of the Martians in the novel were seen in the form of Earthlings, which could lead readers to believe that the Martians are unorganized and only live through the memories of Earthlings. However, there's one story titled, "The Off Season" in which organized Martians hand a hotdog salesman a note for half of Mars. We never see the Martians in such a fashion again.
This is unlikely due to sickness, but more likely due to the colonization and bastardization of their land, as mentioned in the first few chapters with Spender in them. I'm guessing you missed the themes about how the Earthling attempt to recreate Earth was immoral and how they should respect the Martian architecture and history. It many ways it's a criticism on America's Western expeditions, mainly the relentless forced removal of Native Americans from their homes. Even this was mentioned by Spender to a Native American crew member.
I just find it extremely ironic that you referenced this book while doing the main antagonizing action in the novel. Next time, how about you reference a chapter from Fahrenheit 451 and then burn a book?
@Shiloh DeGreat:
I just want to highlight: the Night Meeting and some of the other stories of the Martian Chronicles were used as a frame, but I built up my story, which indeed, highly resembles to the Night Meeting, but is far from being the same.
It is an easy job to criticize the other's work, but how about you try to write your own own stories? There is a lack of quality articles anyway and people would highly appreciate some intellectual excersize. And, please do not forget to do it in such a way, that you please all of your readers!
