Radix Malorum Est Cupiditas

Day 1,148, 12:04 Published in Canada Canada by Francois L. Pignon

Those who are familiar with Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales may remember this quote from The Pardoner's Tale: Radix malorum est cupiditas. Avarice (Greed) is the root of all evil. This happens to be a quote that I myself try to live by, and although I am not always the best at adhering to it, I do try my hardest.

In the past 24 hours, eCanada has again been rocked by a theft of our nations money, driven by greed and interpreted by many to be evil.

Regardless of the circumstances and the perpetrators many of us can agree that my prior statement is true. While it's not at the level of performing a car bombing or shooting an American congresswoman and child in the face in real life, it's still big for many in this game.

That is what we play, right? A game.

I personally have invested real life money into this game as have many others. We play this game to have fun. We like to have fun. For many of us this is a release from the mundane reality of real life where we are surrounded by a constant stream of depressing things.

I understand playing a kind of "evil" character in this game, many people do it well. Lulzy things get people mad easily but in the end don't really effect anybody.

When somebody does something like this it effects a lot of people negatively. Although it gives us something to do in the game (mostly mitigation and recovery) its not really fun.

Before this article gets too long and rambling I want to summarize what I'm trying to say.

1) Radix malorum est cupiditas - It's not fun to take our stuff, so don't.

2) It's just a game, and that means different things to different people, but try to keep it fun for rest of us.

3) Future eCanada Governments: Try to change your policies. Back after Katrina hit New Orleans, FEMA had a graphic on their website that showed their approach to disaster response that was widely publicized as hilarious:

Note how it returns back in to disaster.

Let's try to avoid having that cycle happen to us, over and over again.

We can do it, eCanada.
