Political Take Over pt.1
Nephworks
For anyone that does not know, a PTO (political take over) is a method of taking over a country by which the countries enemies gain positions of power within the country and use their power to destroy the country from the inside.
It usually starts with simple citizen applications made by a countries enemies (or trolls) which, if successful, allow PTOers to run for congress. Getting into congress can be difficult in big countries but in many small countries such as our own, where 2-3 votes is almost a guaranteed place, it can be quite easy.
Once in congress the PTOers can approve citizenship of their friends and the PTO is truly underfoot. If these citizenship approvals go unnoticed then it is possible more PTOers will get in and run for congress and then approve even more PTOers citizenship requests. Like cells dividing the PTOers build strength. This is why it is important for a Ministry of immigration to keep a close tab on all citizens entering the country. It is also the responsibility of the party presidents to nullify any suspicious citizens from Congress elections putting a stop to the PTO for a month. This is why it is so important for Party presidents to be active and aware.
If the worst should happen and a large group of PTOers manage to sneak into a country they can then run for party presidency and nominate one of their own for presidency. With cunning propaganda they can try to swing unsuspecting voters towards their candidate. 2 clickers in particular who may not be well informed may simply vote for an avatar with the country flag, a citizen name which sounds Irish or even based on a Congressmans shout. If the worst should happen then the PTOers will win the presidency election (although this requires a considerable amount of votes in any country). With the power of the presidency the PTOers can conduct all sorts of mischief. They can declare war on friendly nations removing Mutual Protection Pacts (if they have a majority in congress also), they can arrange embargoes cutting off supplies from other countries and income from trade.
The most devastating thing a PTO can do to a country is to strip it of its assets by trading away all its gold and/or currency and melting down state assets. This leaves the country defenceless and penniless and ripe for conquest.
PTOs have a long history in eRepublik because of the outdated Political module. All the cracks in the module have been identified for exploitation and I believe PTOs will also have a future in eRepublik too. PTOs are just another way of playing the game. They are just as dangerous (perhaps more) as a military conquest and it is up to the citizens and administration of a country to keep their eyes out.
Cheers,

It's a dirty sport.
we don't need PTO to do all you say 🙂
NZ is a fine example...
Ireland will never be PTO'd.
John, NZ is completely different to how this article explained it. Completely.
NZ and Russia are all different types of examples.
NZ = Open citizenship due to it being a new country
Russia = After getting wiped anyone who moved to Russia got Citizenship as per request.

No harm in explaining things to those who might not know. You guys might be knowledgeable of game mechanics and acronyms but I was inspired to write this article because I noticed one or two on IRC asking what a PTO is.
@ OJ
At the end of the day, you're still f*cked either way.
@Nephworks
It is more about we have enough 'lovable rogues' yet we don't need PTOers to do mentioned damage.
Of course there is no harm but benefit to explain acronyms, I'd even recommend you to publish a glossary.
Great stuff Neph. It's one of the less common aspects of the game since citizenship was brought in but a cool concept all the same.
Looking forward to part 2 🙂
@Neph
Btw, due to recent introduction of citizenship bonus it became a lot harder to determine difference between a foreign investor and PTOer.
Maybe we can ask foreign investors to send company cost plus .5 or 1 gold in advance for citizenship.
Well written.
@Luminara
Yeah I have been personally approached by one "investor". I think the best way to handle it is to be friendly with them and offer your help. Inform the MoImm and then go from there and keep track of what they do.
Also, Each TD now only has one citizenship approval because our population is so low.
@Nephworks
But the problem is we can not know if 'investor' will really invest after getting citizenship. So investor should send a non-returnable or returnable .5-1 gold in advance, imho.
@Luminara -
For real pTO teams 1 or 5 gold is no problem but it can stop a real investors from arriving to eIRL
I would have to agree with d.7.b here. But maybe it works both ways. Perhaps we can accept the people who refuse to pay the gold (investors) and turn away the ones (PTOers) that do pay. lol
@Nephworks , d.7.b
So our default stance against 'investors' should be nothing more than 'move along'?
Ok, "These aren't the droids you're looking for."
it's funny but gold is worthless when it comes to pTO, the real strength is in unity of the nation. The more the country is divided, easier is to pTO.
The major powers of eRepublik have the same problem. I will try to find some arts about PTO to prove how easy is to make PTO in strong enations even

@Brian Boru
You don't have to write this comment just because you are MoFA (for now). You are far better than that.
Giving Maddog jones citizenship isnt starting a PTO wave?

You make a very good argument, lol.
@Lum >Implying Brian wouldn't have said that had not been given MoFA
>implying Brian Boru is MoFA
You are dumb.
Well let's say that I can't keep up ever changing cabinet members and CPs especially when original thread and/or articles are gone.
Maybe Brian Boru himself is not aware that he is no longer MoFA (as I ironically stated above as 'for now') in contrary to his signature @ http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/great-news-shot-down--1630449/1/20 , too.
Btw, as I said before please inform me if I become minister of something without me realizing it.
Oh gawd... not citizens voicing their intelligent and reasonable opinions in an article!!?! What is eRep coming to... Vote Luminara for Dictator for Life.
