Political Barometer
Aldous Zamiatin
A couple of articles have been published in the past about the political landscape in eBelgium (this one by Reaussou for example) and about the fact that eBelgian parties are not actual representatives of competing political ideologies - the labels you will find on a party page, such as "Center, Libertarian", are rather relative. Furthermore, we have 3 "Center, Libertarian" parties at the moment (Belgium for Belgians, Free Belgium and Neenjas Et Umbrella), and still these parties obviously appeal to completely different groups of our population. The real distinction between the parties seems to be their relation towards the opposing global alliances and the confrontation of PTO (Political Take Over) and ATO (Anti Take Over). But even that isn't the whole picture.
The purpose of this article isn't to examine the differences between the different parties in eBelgium, but to give the eBelgian citizens the opportunity to express their perception of those parties. I would like to ask you to explain as concisely or as elaborately as you prefer why you joined the party you are in now (or why you didn't join any, if you're not a party member) in the comments below - every contribution will be a welcome one.
To stimulate younger players to take part in this political barometer, I will be handing out free stuff to every young player who comments on topic. You can choose between a Q1 weapon or a Q3 piece of food as a reward for your participation. Voting is not obligatory to receive the reward!
I hope to see many eBelgian citizens participate in this poll, members of all different parties, young and experienced. And please respect other people's opinions, even if they don't agree with yours.
Thank you for participating!

I came to Belgium in response to a build up of Phoenix personnel acquiring Belgian citizenship when Belgium had the misfortune of having open citizenship. I later found out there were other groups who came here similarly, many claiming the same reason, or the Phoenix side claiming they were here to counter an EDEN build up.
I chose to join Free Belgium because I believe that Belgium needs to be free and chart an independent course between the large alliances. To be able to do that there must be a balance between the factions that back the parties and people here in Belgium.
I believe that the "Tactical Belgian" population needs to be reduced by both sides in tandem so that neither side gains too strong a position and runs the risk of derailing Belgium.
I believe that the comments posted by certain members of the BfB are akin to fear mongering and seek to mislead people and continue to try to ignite divisive matters settled months ago.
I believe that if I were to join any other party, the BfB fear mongers would try to paint that party's position incorrectly.
I enjoy being in Belgium and look forward to getting to meet many of the new players here.
Being a brand new citizen of Belgium, I chose to be a party member @ BfB. After reading fora, eRep history, etc. I concluded (maybe I'm totally wrong) that BfB are the only party with a strong message, notably one that I support. It wasn't easy to see what FB or the others are up to, but as I said, maybe I'm missing some page/article that explains.
So to conclude, I actually thought about my choise, BfB, but it would be nice for starters like myself to access some sort of political agenda of the different political sides.
I came to eBelgium, because I wanted to help eBelgium to decide its own future to counter the soldiers of EDEN that imposed martial law in eBelgium. At first those were the soldiers of The Group (eRomanian) and the eUS group Seal 6 who took power in eBelgium.
Later the influence of eRomania collapsed, but the influence of eUS became deciding. The citizens of e Belgium should decide eBelgium's future. The foreign soldiers should leave.
I joined BfB, but left the nation because I do not want to live under control of foreign soldiers. With the latest victory of BfB I might come back to eBelgium.
@Rod Damon: You sai😛 "I came to Belgium in response to a build up of Phoenix personnel acquiring Belgian citizenship when Belgium had the misfortune of having open citizenship. I later found out there were other groups who came here similarly, many claiming the same reason, or the Phoenix side claiming they were here to counter an EDEN build up." You are wrong, you are leader of a eUS group trying to have the power in eBelgium. You were (or are) the leader of eCIA working for eUS. I know you enjoy to be in eBelgium. That part is true. 😉
I started playing late in 2009 when eBelgium was under eUK rule. The party most easily to contact me was Forza Belgica/Res Belgica. I joined them because they're the people of the action, not the words. When the independence came, Res Belgica was the party who stayed out of PTO disputes and that's something I really appreciated.
I'm currently working abroad, so I'm not in a party but I'm planning on returning soon. And I will rejoin the political action.
Le discours de Rod ne passe plus et ne passera plus.
Les vautours US doivent rentrer chez eux, les belges veulent conduire leur propre destinée !
I was born in Brussels during the pacific merge with the eNL. One of my first impressions when I joined the game was to "liberate" eBelgium from the eNetherlands. After I had understood the situation I had on of the best times on eRep.
After several months some mercenaries took back eBelgium and stole all our money. The eUK liberated us from this menace until EDEN (eUS, ePoland, ...) took the country back from the eUK.
Since then I'm a bit suspicious about the foreigners who are here for the "good" of eBelgium. I don't think I can be blamed for that.
I joined the BfB in the first place because many of the Belgians I know from the eUNL are in this party and I know they will do a great job for this country.
Recently I leaved the party because I could not agree about one of their actions. So right now I'm not a party member.
@Niemand
First off, you can't say I am wrong in relaying my thoughts and understanding. You are not privy to them, so can't know if they are right or wrong. If you read pretty much anything I have written on the subject (and there is a bit) I have always held that the USA got involved on its own in response to the perceived PHX build up.
If we continued to be here to subjugate Belgium as you seem to imply, given that we held the majority for 3 months, I think we would have been so deeply entrenched by now that we would not even have this as a question.
The facts just never add up with how you choose to spin the insinuations.
@Ro😛 You never had the President, which is what you came for: you even said that you would leave Belgium if the BfB backed you in the presidential elections.
Thanks for your participation guys, and I'm hoping some of the fresh babyboomers will turn up as well.
When I arrived to eBelgium, it was under control of The Group. They were sucking our country dry, but the Benelux party, which countered them, was a bit too black and white in their opposition and I didn't feel any affiliation to the Union back than. I liked Manong's constructive approach and his preparedness to communicate with everyone - this attracted me towards his Belgian Revolutionary Party, but I prefered to stay unattached at that point. I only joined BRP after eBelgium was under eBritish control and Manong had left the party, which then became the only eBelgian party in eUK. After the independence, most young members (who were born under eUK "occupation"😉 came back to eBelgium and so did I. At that point BfB might have seemed to be the most logical choice for an eBelgian, but their strong implicit eUNl background and their old Benelux style black and white view of things wasn't working for me. Having no sympathy for any alliance, I and many of the young eUK born Belgians joined the National Democratic Front, which soon after was renamed to Res Belgica. We took our commitment to unbiased, independent and constructive thinking seriously and have tried to make it our trademark.
I joined eBelgium after I heard about it and the need for people on Studio Brussels.
During my first days I got a lot of help from the active group behind Res Belgica.
So once level 7, I joined Res Belgica and became a member of this "Revolutionary" party in an underdog position (member-wise).
This seemed to me like the best decision in order to keep the political landscape balanced and not just join the biggest party as many seem to be doing.
I don't think I'll regret my decision any time soon.
If I talk about the FB here, I'll just be trolled by the BfB for days, so I won't. Just look up that qoute of me to see why I joined.
@Danie
"You never had the President, which is what you came for: you even said that you would leave Belgium if the BfB backed you in the presidential elections. "
Have I ever said we came for the Presidency? We came here to counter a perceived build up of Phoenix.
As for leaving, I think you are mistaken. Here is the article I wrote http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/putting-myself-on-the-chopping-block-1229814/1/20" target="_blank">http://www.erepublik.com/en/article/putt[..]1/20
Of course that would require PHX to actually be willing to give up their tactical Belgians.
Dieter and pvps each received a piece of Q3 food - thank you for your participation 😉
Any other new player who's not too shy to comment on why he joined his party will get the choice between a Q3 food or a Q1 weapon as a reward for his participation, just like Dieter and pvps 😉
Just as Dieter, I'm a Stubru baby.
And just like him, I didn't decide to just follow the Stubru leader 'Sam the sound', but I went my own way. And there was Res Belgica... they helped me very well true my first days in eBelgium. After following the conversations on their forum and reaching level 7, I decided to join the party because they seemed a party with a lot of good ideas and sense of responsibility.
However, I am not at all informed about what the other parties stand for. Apparently that is not all that important to get elected in eRepublic. So that should really change. And I understand that is what this topic is all about. Parties are just here to be parties and get elected. No-one seems to agree what parties stand for. And that is strange to say the least 😉
I also joined because of Stubru, although a day later. I was afraid this would take a lot of my time, as I'm also a Travian player, but then I heard it actually doesn't take much time.
I made the mistake of starting in Flanders and fighting there once. It took a long time to pay for a moving ticket. But I could move after paying my ticket with lvl6 treasure. After using Q1 food my wellness dropped just below 80, which made fighting more than 4 times difficult.
The articles posted about wellness and such helped me to raise my wellness, and also helped me understand what 90+ wellness meant in the title of the company I work for. After exchanging some gifts with citizen.info and using Q3 food, my wellness increased. For now I'm trying to keep my health above 90 which seems difficult even with Q3 food.
Then the issue was about which party to join. Res appealed to me even while Sam recommended BfB to us. Also it looked better that just joining the biggest party, as that would divide the power a bit instead of a single party that has all power. As for the elections it seems who can organize the best voting distribution scheme wins the most seats.
I also received some propaganda accusing Res(and F😎of PTO before the elections, which made me question BfB seriousness. As for laws being voted on, I see a lot of tax changes that change nothing or others that only seems there for the experience of voting. Those are ok, as long real laws are voted on too.
"I see a lot of tax changes that change nothing or others that only seems there for the experience of voting."
Don't worry, that only happens at the end of the congress term. Congressmen get experiance for voting so at the end of the term, people propose some stupid laws. Everyone votes no so they don't change anything, and congress get free experiance.
@All
I really attach importance to this topic because this is for me the main problem in eRep. So can we please keep it civilized and keep the you-know-which-discussion for all the other articles.
Yours truly
Reaussou
@ Medrolke : it's stupid !
Jean1 received a piece of Q3 food for his participation, 07raul07 is still making up his mind 😉 Follow their example and you will be rewarded for sharing your thoughts with us 😉
Hello.
I'm also a baby born out of StuBru-father Sam. Those first days in the New World were quite difficult for me. There was a lot going on not only in eBelgium, but also in the world. The only thing I could do on that moment, was reading a lot of newspapers and trying to understand how everything works here. Quite a lot of those articles mentioned the BfB, because it should be the only party for REAL eBelgians. That's why I actually joined that party as soon as I was able to...
And they helped me quite good in the beginning, but also other organisations and parties did, or members from other parties, like you, Aldous. With the elections coming closer, a lot of new articles were published to describe the current situation in eBelgium. What I noticed after a few days was that in the articles written by BfB, more attention was paid to the fact that they are the only real belgian party, the members of the other parties were all immigrants who tried to influence our neutrality. Instead of making good arguments why BfB members should be better Congressmen than the others. Critisizing others is always easier than looking at your own weaknesses...
But I'm still a member of the party, I even vote for them. And I still support them with all my possibilities. Now they have one month to show me that I made the right decision, otherwise my loyalty could be doubtful during the next elections...
Thanks, Aldous, to give us the possibility to participate actively in this world.
Greetings!
I've joined eBelgium after hearing about eRepublik on 'The Sound of Sam'. Like so many other newbies in eRepublik I've made the mistake to start living in Flanders, i didn't knew then about the hospital in Brussels. So after training/fighting my welness dropped but I received a moving ticket from citizen.info. Once I've reached level 7, the elections were very close, so I decided to make a choice. First i've joined RES but after receiving a pm from somebody @ BfB about foreign influence in RES & after the recommendation from Sam I've switched to BfB and voted for their candidates in the past election.
from somebody @ BfB about foreign influence in RES
Total crap, Blackshark and ThomasRed are destroying BfB. Res Belgica has always been Belgium oriented.
I joined the party " Belgium for Belgians " simply because i want Belgium to be ruled by Belgians. It seems to be an easy answer but, as I'm a new citizen ,I don't understand much about all the taxes and the other stuff so I choosed to join " Belgium for Belgians " for their nationality.
@Gibberish45
+1
It does appear that the two mounted a successful misinformation campaign in an attempt to capitalize on the influx of new players.
Frederik, Drennel and Raul made a sensible choice and each received a piece of Q3 food 😉 But there is still plenty of free stuff for every new citizen who wants to participate in the political barometer 😉
Thank you Gibberish - Res Belgica has indeed always had eBelgiums best interests in mind and is as Belgian as BfB is, but we prefer to highlight the content and not the package.
I also got here through studio brussels.
At the moment I'm not in any party, simply because I don't see what I could do there. Once I get to know the game better I might join one.
However after reading a lot about this country, I've come to the conlusion that if I would join a party, it would probably be Res Belgica. They seem to be the only real neutral party to me, with the best interests in the country. By helping new players, by waging constructive discussions (not constantly blaming everybody else), etc.
I joined BfB because they were very eager to help me in my first days of eRepublik. They also explained some things to me, which I later read up on in the articles that were published by almost every party leading up to the elections of a few days ago.
I like the way they try to unite real Belgians in eBelgium, something that might not be that big of a deal - since this is a "new world", where you can choose to live somewhere else than you do in real life. But it's nice to see how Belgians unite, since we don't see any of that in real life.
I joined eRepublik a while ago and first read a lot of stuff. There's a huge amount of interesting articles out there, kindly provided by all different parties. So when time had come to make a choice, I contacted some authors and I was pleased with their sincerity and after all charmed by ResBelgica: a small party of very hard-working people, who're dedicated to make eBelgium a neutral and fun place to live in. I made my choice, haven't regretted it a minute and I now try to contribute in this great party!
Don't know if I'm still young enough to get some FREE stuff?
(I'm feeling very young nevertheless...)
@Stijn Keep up that kind of thinking and you will do well in this game
@Stonix Glad to see people wantint to step up and get involved.
People should always remember that the option to leave a party and join another is always allowed. You can even leave a party and not be in a party at all. You'll still get to vote for President and Congress.
I'm veru pleased with the amount of young players participating in this survey, but there could always be more of you 😉
And I love to see how conscious our new citizens are about their Wellness - Stijn, Davy and stonix also chose the Q3 food reward, while Adam is still making up his mind 😉
This is a very good article and excellent way to get young players involved. Good job Aldous!
I came to Belgium during the UK war - we (Croatians) moved in Brussels and fought in last minutes of Brussels resistance war to free it from UK. Idea was to prevent UK from using this region as blocker if for some reason they got initiative in battle. Anyway, we took free citizenship to make sure Belgium is not used as blocker in that war. We started BNP, which is now known as Umbrella/Neenjas party. In the first election we had 2 seats in congress, while BfB and FB had the rest at 50-50 ratio. So, if you like to think of them as PHX vs EDEN, turns out our 2 seats were deciding. We are pro-EDEN as well, just that there is no confusion for young players reading this.
In the next elections we left BNP since the neutrality was the state of the fact and both major parties did no harm to Belgium. There was no money stealing, Spain MPP was refused by huge majority (while Hungarian started of with 4 votes YES, all Bf😎. So we helped FB to keep Belgium neutral.
FB won 3 elections and had majority in congress, but for some reason it is easier for some BfB members like ThomasRED and Blackshark to throw accusations of pTO than to do a constructive work. FB also supported Elynea, BfB candidate for president as a sign of good will and proof of no ill intentions. Many of BfB members who are active in congress and actually do a good job know that. Maybe Blachshark would know it also if he visited forum occasionaly.
Positive campaign and hard work would be much better thing for Belgium.
Most of the Croatians left Belgium to help Rod in his project of reducing "tactical voters". All in all about 25 USA and Croatian "tactical voters" changed citizenship until now (maybe more?). None of the Phoenix "tactical voters" did. So much for Belgium for Belgians 🙂
Now let the trolling begin!
As you may have noticed in his comments, Romper is not a RL Belgian. Though he has goals other then mine I would trust him with Belgian responsibility. He has been in cogress and proved himself a trustworthy ally and defender of Belgian interests. With this example I would like to encourage everyone not to look blind on real-life nationality. Welcome everyone who shares your interests, don't look blind on race, color, nationality or alliance.
eBelgium for everyone. An eBelgium with eBelgians without criteria is the road to peaceful nation!
I've been here since early 2010, like many, i started looking around, researched a little about the game, and when reaching lvl 7, i made my decision. As like many others, RB's social program appealed to me, as well as the broadminded and open atmosphere.
The biggest gap in political Belgium, is an agenda (maybe a reflection of RL belgium 😉). There should be a debate between party presidents to determine: what fields should be covered in everyones political agenda, and what does every party think of this, both in numbers, as ideologically.
Maybe I'll think this through and post it in a newspaper.
Thank you all for your participation - you made my barometer say "FAIR" 😃
Antoine Adam felt warlike and finally decided to go for the Q1 weapon 😉
