On Role Playing

Day 2,912, 08:23 Published in USA India by eRoughRider

To begin, this is RoughRider. I changed my name a few weeks ago after growing tired of the TR theme.

I haven't written an article in a while, so I thought I'd start of with something simple: Role Playing.

In eRepublik, we all naturally role play. We join military units, follow orders from commanders, vote and run in a variety of elections, participate in local and worldwide media, conduct diplomacy with foreign powers, and the list goes on.

But here in the eUSA, we take it a step further. A lot MUs and Parties have offsite forums, the country has an offsite forum, we irc (or used to), vote in primaries, hold Congressional meetings, have suppliers who spend a gallant number of hours keeping soldiers armed, we have a more than bountiful alphabet soup of ogs, etc., etc.

I'm not discussing this to chastise you, it's just to identify a fact of life in the eUSA.

For those of you who have known me over the years (on Rough Rider and RoughRider), you know I am a strong proponent of supporting and protecting new players. As such, I tend to donate a few dozen gold when TG upgrades come around. I lent 10 gold to John Gregorson, author of Dio Must Die.

This beautifully written article received a lot of unfair criticism, in my opinion. A lot of people laughed it off as being "too serious" or "overly dramatic". In the end, these are all attacks on John for taking role playing too far. In a society like ours, that used to thrive on role playing, there is apparently a line, and he crossed it.

I think that we should redraw the line and encourage more role playing. eRepublik feels more like a job than a game now-a-days, particularly for those high in power. It seems as if we are removing the fun aspects of role playing and adding more mechanical and monotonous ones.

I used to love listening and participating in the Presidential Debates. The moderators were always good, the debates were always interesting, and it was just an overall happy atmosphere. This, in addition to the old ambassador program, state run military competitions, irc parties, media competitions, nasa (offsite recruiting programs), and tons of others I don't remember or know about, are what I miss the most about eRepublik.
I am very limited in resources and ability to promote more role playing, but I'll do my best. And I encourage you all to do the same.
