On Elections and Alliances

Day 528, 19:16 Published in Canada Canada by CSD

It’s a funny thing about facts. It’s really hard to get the full picture of something until you have all of them.

It is absolutely true that in a single post in an ongoing thread, I suggested that the CSD offer cabinet posts to Tom Hagan (CPP) and Scorpio (DAL).

There are more facts you might not have:
• I never indicated that the cabinet positions were contingent on their endorsement
• Both Tom Hagan and Scorpio turned down the offers
• The DAL and CPP are still endorsing me for the election
• After I had the endorsement I spoke with Jacobi to express my intent to ask him to sit as Minister of Communication because I was impressed with his recent broadcast, and would like to see eCanada represented with that level of commitment and enthusiasm
• Bruck contacted me with a similar offer, asking me to endorse him so he could have “one last term” and offered to give three CSD members cabinet positions. He also indicated that he would love to see me as PM next term (his words)
• Bruck also contacted the leaders of CPP and DAL and made similar offers

Is this the place where I rail against Bruck and tell you what a dirty backroom dealer he is? No, certainly not, because there wasn’t anything unethical in the offer he made.

When you are negotiating a government that will require multi-partisan support, you absolutely need to make participation and co-operation both attractive and possible. Incorporating members of other parties into your plans for cabinet is the most powerful way of demonstrating your commitment to a co-operative future government.

It’s easy to use a stolen screenshot and some on-fire accusations to start a propaganda campaign. It makes handy mud to fling when you are trying to discredit the opposition’s candidate in the middle of the election. But the truth is that all of the major parties in eCanada perform such negotiations, and not for the first time in these elections. Calling it a coup, or saying that it is only unethical when the CSD does it is the height of political hypocrisy.
