Now It's Only a Conversation Piece

Day 792, 01:11 Published in USA China by pyroelectricity

When I joined eRepublik, it was fun. There was real war, and no hard feelings. It was a small community where it wasn't a terribly difficult achievement to say you knew most of the people in a large country.

I fought in China, I fought in WWII. Romanians and Indonesians would attempt to kill each other in the game, and then go on IRC and laugh about how stupid but insanely fun it all was.

And then came the butthurt Hungarians with their massive baby boom and their grudge against the rest of the world. They brought RL into the game, and it began to degrade.
I hid myself from the chaos in eChina, where none of that truly mattered. I was able to isolate myself and have fun. But after the baby boom, I could no longer play in eChina.

I returned to Romania, and launched myself right back into the shitfight between the two alliances. And from here it has gotten worse and worse.
eRepublik has become an international 4chan, where even the war doesn't matter. All that matters is the trolling, and everything else is just a device to a means.

eRepublik used to require talent to play. You had to be good at something, you had to be smart. I enjoyed it because it drew from the highest intellectual class throughout the world. There were the writers, and tacticians, and the organizers, and the economists, and the commanders, and the ambassadors. . .
But no, eRepublik is no longer a game about skill. It's a game in which the best players are the ones who can think of the most creative ways to call the people they don't like assholes.
It's just not fun anymore. And ultimately, fun is all we ever play games for. So I have no more reason to play eRepublik.

Actually, that's a complete lie.
What remains preserved is the social aspect of the game. Although the ingame media is filled with crap, other communication channels remain pristine and will stay that way because of selective admission. One cannot tarnish a secret.
So that is where I will remain. The game itself is effectively dead to me.

I will remain the eRomanian ambassador to eChina, for that is still fun for me and there is potential benefit yet.
I don't know what will become of this newspaper. Perhaps I will maintain it, perhaps I will not. I have a few more articles I may still write, and even fewer I will promote. But in reality, my eRepublik saga ends here.

Over the past 13 months, eRepublik has been tremendous for me. I met interesting people from all over the world, and learned skills that will be incredibly useful for me as I continue with my life. I can confidently say that without eRepublik, I would not be the same person I am today. This just isn't going to work for me anymore.

If you really want to contact me outside of the game, ask for my info. Generally, I'm going to assume that anyone with significant interest in eRepublik isn't going to kill me, especially if you're thousands of miles away from me.

There are two formal endings I've used on my paper, when it has been THHG, Pyroclastic Flow, and CivInt. I've discontinued one, my ending for articles in China. Today, I discontinue the other. I will no longer formally post in my newspaper.

So for the last time let me say,
(~-pyroelectricity-~)

Just for the record I'm not quitting, I'm getting rid of the majority of my ingame activity. I'll be around on IRC pretty frequently, as always.
