Citizens!

We have had a few days to ingest campaign materials from this months CP candidates, assisted by a debate format arranged by Gavin. Having read the statements from the candidates, I thought I’d offer a few thoughts on what Government should be about, and what sort of characteristics we should want from the Cabinet and the Country President.

A Government should be active and undertake all sorts of activities - it should do so visibly. The politics module is vital to retention, and a wide reaching cabinet of active players not only provides for every player type, but it also sets an example of what new players can aim to be doing.

Access and communication are particularly important - Training wars, financial agreements, giveaways, rewards all rely on the movement of info inside cabinet and between allies, and without proper commitment to keep things running and to be around to make it happen the wheels will start to fall off. All citizens should seriously consider who gets their vote if there are candidates who do not offer these commitments.

That is also why I am surprised that having a shrunken, invisible, back-room government is a political ambition of a few of the other Parties. The desire to have little media activity and lame-duck politicians sends the wrong message to players old and new, and fundamentally makes little sense when encouraging players who want to do well in Government (to the surprise of no one) produces high performing cabinets!

TRS has stood in opposition to these views for months, and in opposition to the desire to see power and politics become the preserve of a small number of people. Politics should be participatory with decisions and ideas taking place out in the open, and we should never expect elections to be foregone conclusions (or try to make them so). Instead we should have constructive conversations about our ideas and as MIK has said, we should be unifying around encouraging players and playing to our strengths. That will deliver for everyone, but shrinking back to ‘gov by default’ will deliver for no one.

I take pride in being in a party that is willing to stand for something and chase change, even if it does ruffle feathers. Likewise, pursuing pragmatism over dogma and wanting to hold office to make the eUK a better, more ambitious nation are all reasons I’ll be voting MIK for president. On principle alone, I will not vote for minimum-viable-governments running not because they want to offer new leadership, but for the sake of opposition alone.

So … next month let’s do better, more dialogue, more candidates (?) and more ideas. And let's hope that the Government can set an example to a wider range of players to attract people who actually want to govern to make themselves known.

Thanks for reading!
