Itsukushima ( 厳島 ) is an island in the western part of the Inland Sea of Japan, located in the northwest of Hiroshima Bay. It is popularly known as Miyajima ( 宮島 ), which in Japanese means "Shrine Island".

Not many people visit Miyajima Island for longer for periods of time. The usual visit consists of taking a picture of the submerged torii gate and while in itself it's an impressive sight, this beautiful island was so much more to offer.

Itsukushima Shrine

Probably the most memorable site on this island - it is a location that you must visit. The whole island owes its name to this shrine. The aforementioned torii gate was an entrance..during the high tide it appears to be floating in the sea and at low tide you can walk out to it and pass through the gate. The shrine was believed to have been first founded in 593 although the first documented record isn’t until 811 and the basis of the current design dates back to 1168.

Wildlife

The island is at its most beautiful in spring. Japan's signature dish: cherry blossom trees cover this island and even a leisurely walk is sure to be memorable.

The locals are sure to greet you as well: white tail deer.

This is just a short presentation of this Japan's beautiful coastal jewel. Hope you enjoyed it.
