Issue 158: An Interview with a political giant - Vyse (Ireland edition)

Day 651, 09:50 Published in Ireland United Kingdom by malta_1990

As part of a new series of interviews for "The Maltese Falcon", we first take a look at a long time friend of the eUK and a RL relative of one of our most famous former President (he's FD's cousin). With the North American War raging on, we tend to ignore or completely forget the neutral nations. In order to shine a light on this non-examined scene, the veteran Irish MoFA seemed like a good choice for an interview.

Here's what happened when Vyse the 2nd (aka. Vyse) popped into our Fleet Street headquarters for an interview with our editor, while downing a fine bottle of Irish whiskey down their gullets.

How did you find out about eRepublik?

I found out when my cousin sent me an invite back in beta.

In brief, could you tell us a little about your eRepublik life?

In brief sure. I started out back in the early days of Beta ran for Mayor of Galway (Winning twice). I’ve been Minister of Defence and foreign Affairs a few times. I founded Ireland’s biggest political party (The Irish Union Party) and ran for President a few times but lost them all to both ImaNewbie and Victor Petrescu. After that I’ve been banned for looking after a friends account and reborn as Vyse the 2nd serving as Minister for foreign Affairs again.

How did you get involved in e-Eire's political scene?

I just found the game interesting and dived straight in. I ran for Mayor straight away though I lost that election and it took a long time to break into Congress for me cause in Beta I was never high up Patton’s list for a seat.

As a long time Irish MoFA and politician, you have successfully helped shape eIreland's highly successful neutral stance, which is quite a rarity in the New World. Without giving too much away, what is the secret behind this success in your opinion?

There is no real secret. We try to keep good communication lines open with all our neighbours. Though mostly it’s success comes from people just not wanting to invade us. We don’t have any valuable raw materials nor any strategic value. (At least not to justify the cost of invasion.) We just try be diplomatic with our neighbours and show them the same amount of respect we wish to be shown.

In your opinion as a well-respected member of the New World, which features would you like to see added to the game or improved?

I’d change the Congress elections. Right now it’s just not very democratic. Not sure how it’d be fixed but I always felt Beta had a better system for this. Even if it gave the Party President too much control.

This time last year, Ireland was in the evil clutches of Victor Petrescu's PTO. Has Ireland recovered? If not, could the recovery have been handled better?

I’d say we have recovered. There are still a few after effects but those will never go away. A lot has been done so Ireland can survive any occupation now be it political or military.

Ireland has pretty much stood on the sidelines in this war, having only come to the aid of Greece when their original regions were invaded by Greece. What is your opinion on this war both from a Military strategy standpoint and a Foreign Affairs standpoint?

Greece has done nothing wrong in my eyes. It has never invaded anyone and should not be attacked by Turkey again who were just looking to expand due to circumstances in the Americas. So Ireland will defend Greece. Greece helped us perhaps more than our allies did during the Victor Petrescu takeover.

From a Military strategy point of view the War is helping Ireland test itself in real military combat for the first time via MPP since the “Belgian Union War” when only 1 Irishman got to fight. It helps test our Irish Defence Forces organisation and weapons distribution.

Are super alliances like PEACE and EDEN here to stay, or are they a ticking time bomb?

PEACE and EDEN may last longer than some people say. Though all do eventually fall and they should break into the regional and cultural alliances. The mistake many people make about Alliances is you can’t magic them up out of thin air. They have to be built on trust and that has to be built up nation by nation. Much like the Northern Alliance was till it let in the Romanians and looked to become ATLANTIS.

Ireland has always had a close relationship with the UK, however, the Raleigh Treaty has been a sore point for both nations. Do you envisage this to remain in the future, or will a major amendement be penned to deal with recent developments when it comes up for renewal?

That treaty caused quite a fuss when your President and Minister of Foreign Affairs burst into our channel arguing that we had broken it. (Sara and Goku) Arguing against the two citizens that wrote the treaty (Myself and Theus) which was a very silly diplomatic move by them. I do see it being renewed though as now the UK looks to have people who know how to negotiate in charge.

Anything else you'd like to add to the interview or tell our readers? Any comments about the Whiskey?

Nope 😛

Thank you Vyse for participating in this interview and answering the questions quite willingly.
