Invasion?

Day 1,806, 14:23 Published in United Kingdom United Kingdom by Bohemond4

The eUK occupies a current position of relative stability and strength within the world. With friends around us on all sides for the most part, or the threat of retaliation from our friends, we have the privilege of being one of the largest nations for the smallest population size. However, our territories occupy a region that has a substantial number of borders, which can be an issue for us.

Lets take a look at the entire world as it currently stands:

As you can see, our close ally, Poland, currently occupies a substantial part of the world (for those who are unaware, Poland are the pink ones currently ruling Canada, France, Germany and Poland). With Poland defending two of our borders, the one from Canada and the other from France, this neutralises two potential threats to our nation, as well as offering the ability to respond to Germark should they invade, which they have the ability to do.

Now, lets focus in on our own theatre: Europe:

As you can see, our old enemies France are now isolated in the south of their old nation with enough Polish territory between us and them to not worry about them currently. Ireland, another old enemy now turned into a semi-friend also holds onto their territory next to us while several small nations exist around us: Norway, Belgium and the Netherlands.

So, what does this all tell us? For starters we can see that we occupy an interesting position, a position that makes war rather interesting. Sure, we can invade and wipe Ireland, again, but that won’t help us in the long run with constant threats from RW and Irish allies turning the tide and invading us. As one of the largest nations with the smallest population, we just cannot compete with nations like Poland on the international stage; in fact, we cannot even beat France in a one-on-one, even in their weakened state as a nation.

There have been suggestions that we aim to expand our resource base, but I ask: where? How and with what? We occupy a strong position purely because we have a powerful ally in a powerful position helping us out. The only possible way to expand our borders is if there was launched an invasion of the United States by Macedonia, and we tag team with them by taking regions, same as if we had joined in against Canada in the last couple of weeks. However, this would have serious geopolitical impact upon us as we would leave ourselves open to a counter-attack from Germark.

So, what options are left for expansion? There is, of course, the option to invade Ireland, then theres Norway, Belgium and the Netherlands but what will this achieve? Will the bonus be worth the cost of invading, and subsequently holding onto these territories?

Now, I am not saying we should not have a war, I am arguing here that a war on conquest and domination is not, necessarily, favourable to us at this point in time, or even plausible. We just cannot invade the resource-rich zones we want to be able to get the bonuses.
