In the Tent

In the Tent

It was cold in the tent, and the water
boiling on the gas flame gave them
a welcomed glass of hot sweet tea.
The men sat on soft pads that were arranged
in a circle so they faced inward for discussion,
carefully placing their feet so as to not offend.
Their conversation was heavy with outrage
at the fall of Baghdad to Christian armies.
No one was foolish enough to question the will of Al-lah ,however,
and the old man spoke to them.
“The Mother of Cities has been given before.
Under the Abbasid Caliph (the 37th successor to the
Prophet Muhammad…
Blessed be his name…).
The enemy was led by a man named ‘Hulegu’
who was married to Christian wives and whose
mother ,herself, was Christian.
As Christians measure time, it was 1257
when his armies swept out of the east
swelled with those of Armenia, Georgia, and Turkic tribes,
all aided from within Baghdad by local Christians,
broke through the walls and took all.
The city fell and was stripped of its gold and riches.
Worse yet,
the lost of life among believers then
was ten times, no, ten times ten,
more than under the Americans now.
It pleased Al-lah to deliver
The Caliph and his sons to be taken in captivity,
sewn into sacks,
and kicked to death, then trampled by Mogul horses.
It was a dark day for Islam,
but then, the people of Islam
returned to the straight path
and the Mother of Cities was returned.”
