In opposition to the 'Official Opposition' on Taxes
Stevearino
An article has been released [OPPOSITION] Review of CP's first few days arguing that the proposed legislation to set a standard rate of Work Tax, VAT and Import Taxes for the eUK represents a sneaky 'stealth tax' by the Country President.
I argue that is not true - it is important to remember that it is Congress that votes on the setting of all tax rates, not the CP. The proposed budget that was presented by Adastros, was submitted in accordance with the Tax Rates that the eUK had been maintaining (as approved by Congress) at that time.
As it is Congress that alone has the power to set tax rates, irrespective of the views and wishes of the CP (if it so desires) then an equally strong, if not more valid argument could be made that Neil was promising in his election manifesto something that was not in his sole power to give - a budget with reduced taxes.
If Neil had been elected, either his budget would have been approved and a subsequent change to the Tax Rates would have had to have proposed and voted upon, or the budget would have been rejected by Congress and the relevant legislative procedure for agreeing a budget would have commenced.
But, having established the proper procedure for setting the rates of tax, it is important to ensure that Congress accepts its responsibility to due its duty, which is providing sufficient funding to give the government the best possible chances of securing what is our no.1 priority - the defence of the realm.
The eUK has, by all accounts, bonuses - 4/5/3 (Food/Weapons/Houses) that give a benefit to its citizens that require as a matter of patriotic duty those citizens to be willingly taxed to maximise our potential to function as a strong nation. The proposed 6% Work Tax that is part of the legislation currently going through Congress is just such an example. We owe it to ourselves and our allies to do our best to aim for a strong, peaceful and prosperous future.
Unity is Strength

Total BS, neither congress nor the CP has the buttons to change anything in a dictatorship. If congress wants the power to decide it must first get a MU commander to return democracy.
Before anyone mentions Constitutional Dictatorship let me ask how many congress people have working voting buttons
But congress literally has votes on things all the time and woldy does what they say 😒 It's been working fine like that for months
The ONLY way that congress can get a vote that is meaningful in this game is to have the buttons to do it.
If Woldy was abducted by aliens tomorrow you would have to wait until he "died" and his MU command was re-assigned before anything could be done.
No, we'd do a revolution...
If Woldy was abducted by aliens tomorrow, how would we find out? Unless they demanded a ransom of 1,000,000 eRepublik gold...
abducted again?
Constitutional Dictatorship, what an oxymoron!
You're an oxymoron! 😛
Nobody in real life has a "voting button" that magically makes things happen. Legislation is passed, and then others enact it - if parliament decides to raise taxes they have to rely on the Inland Revenue to make sure the taxes they voted for are actually collected.
Here, congress passes legislation, then Woldy presses a button to ensure the taxes are actually collected.
What's the difference?
Can Neil plz do an opposition to the opposition of the opposition?
You are are not opposition, none of you are, you are all kiss butts!
Free your mind!
I'll be your opposition in a minute m8
